November 24 at Pine Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Gaskins, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of the late Lucas Sellers and Beulah Brock Parker. She was a cosmetologist and was owner and operator of Dot’s Beauty Shop for over 50 years. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by husband Fred E. Gaskins and son Tony A. Merriman. Short, born in Chesterfield County, was a son of the late Nathaniel and Hattie Chapman Short. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent, President of Baptist Training Union. He served on the Trustee Board, Usher Board, Choir, Deacon and Chairman of the Deacon Board. He served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946 on the Patrol Bombing squad in South Pacific. He was a Mason of the Forest Dale Lodge #476, an Eastern Star member of the Forest Dale Chapter #379 and a member of the American Legion Post #214.
He was preceded in death by wife Rosa Lee Little Short; son Melvin Short; brothers Wilbert, Nathaniel and Carl Short; daughter-in-law Lois Short.

JEFFERSON – Robert A. Raley, 79, died Oct. 31, 2007. A funeral service was held Nov. 2 at Jefferson United Methodist Church with burial in Jefferson cemetery.
Raley, born in Jefferson, was a son of the late Mack Andrew and Ethel Reeves Raley. He was a lifelong member of Jefferson United Methodist Church where he served throughout the years on the Administrative Board, as Superintendent of Sunday School and on the Pastor/Parish Relations Committee. A veteran of the United States Navy, he later spent a year at Presbyterian Junior College and two years at Newberry College. He worked for many years as a farmer on the land that he loved and also ran Raley Hardware Store following his father’s death. He began a lifetime of service as a member of the Chesterfield County Council for more than two decades. He also served in the South Carolina House of Representatives for two terms, where he was a member of the Ways and Means Committee. He held several offices in the Jefferson Post of American Legion, was a Veteran’s Service Officer and was currently serving as a town council member for the town of Jefferson. With his late wife Polly, he also served on various AARP committees and worked to establish branch libraries in the communities throughout Chesterfield County. He completed her term and a subsequent term on the Chesterfield County Library Board.
He was preceded in death by wife of 49 years Pauline Rowell Raley; brother Joseph Mack Raley. Surviving are daughter Paulette (Tom) Rayfield; granddaughters Kerry (Hunter) Bowie, Lindsay (Tarek) Elshazly and Ali Rebecca Rayfield; countless friends in Jefferson and throughtout the state of South Carolina.

Welch, born in Lancaster County, was a daughter of the late Moses and Lottie Thompson Truesdale. She was a faithful member of the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, Jefferson for over 60 years where she served as assistant church clerk, intermediate and adult Sunday School teacher, chaplain of missionary ministry, book choir leader, senior choir. She was a member of the Golden Gate Lodge Chapter #234 in Kershaw, S.C. where she served as Worthy Matron and associate Matron until her health declined.
She was preceded in death by eight sisters, three brothers, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Elease Newman, Virgie Louallen, Joe Elaine McManus, Collera Catherine Louallen, Evangeline Myers; brother Detroit (D.T.) Hough.

CHESTERFIELD - William P. Kyler Sr., 88, died October 10, 2007 at Chestefield General Hospital, Cheraw. A funeral service was held October 15 at Word of Life Fellowship Church, Cheraw with burial in National Cemetery, Florence, S.C. Kyler, born in Beaufort, S.C., was a son of the late James and Elizabeth Pennington Kyler. At the age of seven he moved to New York City and graduated from Haaren High School. He then enlisted in the Army in 1944 during WWII,
he was honorably discharged in 1946. He then worked for the NYC Transit Authority as a dispatcher until he retired in 1980. After retirement he moved to Chesterfield and was a faithful member and Deacon of Lily of the Valley Holiness Church in Chesterfield. He served as Past 3rd Vice Commander of Johnson Lane American Legion Post 214. He was preceded in death by sister Marvelous Watson. Surviving are wife of 51 years, Leila M. Kyler; sons, William Kyler of Brooklyn, NY and Darrell (Cora) Kyler of Cheraw; daughter-in-law Dory Kyler of Chesterfield; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. CHESTERFIELD — Paul Edward Snipes, 79, died September 25, 2007 at his home. A funeral service was held September 28 at White Oak Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery. Snipes, born in Charlotte, N.C., was a son of the late John Henry and Blanche Watts Snipes. He was a graduate of Ruby High School and a retired shipping supervisor with J.P. Stevens with 40 years of service. He received the first Employee of the Year Award in 1989 from J.P. Stevens. Paul was a faithful member of White Oak Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and choir member. He was also a former member and deacon of Douglas Mill Baptist Church. Mr. Snipes also served on the Board of Trustees of the Douglas Mill Cemetery Association, the building committee of the Douglas Mill Fellowship Building, and was a Watchman Representative for Hospice of Chesterfield County. Paul was an avid collector and restorer of classic Chevrolets and was best known for this 1955 Chevrolet convertible, which was used in the movie Shag. He received numerous awards throughout the Southeast for his classic cars. He also enjoyed farming and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Patricia Douglas Snipes; three brothers, Harold, Billy, and Leon Snipes; sisters, Johnsie Brantley and Mary Bess. Paul Edward Snipes
CHESTERFIELD — Paul Edward Snipes, 79, died September 25, 2007 at his home. A funeral service was held September 28 at White Oak Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery. Snipes, born in Charlotte, N.C., was a son of the late John Henry and Blanche Watts Snipes. He was a graduate of Ruby High School and a retired shipping supervisor with J.P. Stevens with 40 years of service. He received the first Employee of the Year Award in 1989 from J.P. Stevens. Paul was a faithful member of White Oak Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and choir member. He was also a former member and deacon of Douglas Mill Baptist Church. Mr. Snipes also served on the Board of Trustees of the Douglas Mill Cemetery Association, the building committee of the Douglas Mill Fellowship Building, and was a Watchman Representative for Hospice of Chesterfield County. Paul was an avid collector and restorer of classic Chevrolets and was best known for this 1955 Chevrolet convertible, which was used in the movie Shag. He received numerous awards throughout the Southeast for his classic cars. He also enjoyed farming and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Patricia Douglas Snipes; three brothers, Harold, Billy, and Leon Snipes; sisters, Johnsie Brantley and Mary Bess. CHESTERFIELD — John Lorenzo Allred, 54, died Oct. 2, 2007. A funeral service was held Oct. 5 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Chesterfield Cemetery.
Allred, born in Cheraw, was a son of John J. and Tallie Mae White Allred. He was a former truck driver.
He was preceded in death by nephews John E. Miller and CWO-3 Michael Lee Hartwick Jr.

CHERAW — Charles F. Caulder, 82, died Oct. 1, 2007 at his home. A funeral service was held Oct. 3 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Caulder born in Chesterfield County, was a son of the late Allie Jackson and Nezzie Rushing Caulder. He was a graduate of Cheraw High School and attended Clemson University. Caulder was a retired teacher with Cheraw High School. He was a Sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII, having completed 208 flights over the Hump as radio operator and mechanic. Caulder was a lifelong faithful member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, where he served as permanent Trustee and was chairman of the Cemetery Committee for many years. He enjoyed working on and restoring antique and classic cars.
Caulder was first married to the late Nathalie Short Caulder and then to the late Dezzie Hall Caulder, and was also preceded in death by a brother Edward L. Caulder, and by sisters Valdese Patterson and Katie Grant.
Surviving are son the Rev. Ronnie (Linda) Caulder, of Cheraw; daughters Sherrie (Jerry) Chapman and Cathey (Randy) Bedford, both of Cheraw, and Susan (John) Jennings, of Columbia; brother Jack Caulder, of Auburn,; sister Janie L. Howle, of Cheraw; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

CHESTERFIELD — Carolyn Margaret Mewshaw, died Oct. 4, 2007. A funeral service was held Oct. 6 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mewshaw lived in Pasedena, Md., but more recently in Chesterfield. After high school graduation she entered the Civil Air Patrol and then began her career as a U.S. Postal carrier. A devoted wife and mother, her childhood love of Girl Scouts was passed to her girls, as she became a leader for many years. Her life encompassed many adventures. She made many friends and was a special part of the lives she touched, but, most of all, her love for family is her greatest legacy.
She was preceded in death by parents Joseph and Marie Nieberlein; brother Joseph and granddaughter Lauren Anne Patch.
