The Rev. Alphues D. Evans

PAGELAND - The Rev. Alphues D. Evans, 81, died Oct. 24, 2007. A funeral service was held Oct. 27 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Evans, born in Pageland, was the son of the late Lee Roy and Eva Allie Griffin Evans. He attended Wingate College and Fruitland Bible College, and was a retired Baptist minister having served churches in North and South Carolina. He was a member of Union Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by wife of 60 years, Helen Funderburk Evans; son David Evans; brothers W.L. and Everette Evans.
Surviving are daughters Mary E. Hodge of Darlington, S.C. and Jean E. (Leroy Jr.) Sikes of Mt. Croghan; sister Geraldine E. Atkinson of Pageland; brothers, Roy Thomas Evans of Monroe, N.C., Marvin Evans of Marshville, N.C. and Charles Evans of Chesterfield; five grandchildren Shelia (Jevin) Whitaker, Eric Sikes both of Mt. Croghan; Tony (Sandy) Evans, Kristy (Jason) Melton both of Ruby; Tammy H. Sikes of Darlington, S.C.; five great grandchildren Jonathan, Brandon, Trevor, Aaron and Becky.

Vermil Hough
JEFFERSON - Vermil Hough, 87, died Oct. 13, 2007. A funeral service was held Oct. 20 at Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church with burial in church cemetery.
Hough, born in Lancaster County, was a daughter of the late Hollis and Arievia Blackwell Hough. She was retired from Bluefield State College. She was a member of Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church, senior choir, adult Sunday School class and a member of the missionary ministry.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Elease Newman, Virgie Louallen, Joe Elaine McManus, Collera Catherine Louallen, Evangeline Myers; brother Detroit (D.T.) Hough.
Surviving are son, Nelson (Lisa) Griffin, Jr. of London, Ky.; daughters, Betsy (Rick) Freeman of Seneca, S.C., Chris (Paul) Brown and Sylvia Griffin of London, Ky.; sisters, Earnestine Cobb of Columbus, Ga., Amanda (Daniel) Jackson, Arlevia Brumfield and Lethia (David) Sellers of Brooklyn, N.Y.; brother James Hough of Pageland; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bobby Wilson Jackson
WINGATE,N.C. - Bobby Wilson Jackson, 77, died Oct. 16, 2007 at CMC-Union. A funeral service was held Oct. 19 at Faulks Baptist Church, Marshville, N.C., with burial in the church cemetery.
Jackson, born in Chesterfield County, was a son of the late Robert Lee and Bessie Sullivan Jackson. He was a retired shading manager of the Customer Service Center at Springs Industries. He was also a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by first wife, Mary Jo Braswell Jackson.
Surviving are wife Jean Purser Jackson; sons Donald Wilson Jackson of Wesley Chapel, N.C. and Bobby Dennis Jackson of Roxboro, N.C.; stepdaughter Sandy Wicker of Wingate, N.C.; brothers, Jack Jackson of Lansing, Michigan, Therald Jackson of Monroe, N.C., John and Robert Jackson of Pageland; sister Margaret Tippens of Marshville, N.C.; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Nyokia Hodge Melton
CHESTERFIELD - Nyokia Hodge Melton, 52, died Oct. 23, 2007 at her home. A funeral service was held Oct. 25 at Mt. Croghan Baptist Church with burial in Oakland Baptist Church cemetery.
Melton, born in Ruby, was a daughter of Jeanette Brock Hodge and the late Johnnie “Son” Hodge. She was a store clerk and a member of Mt. Croghan Baptist Church.
Surviving are husband, Curtis Ray Melton; mother; brothers, Asa Ray and Homer Hodge both of Ruby, Charles Hodge of Lancaster, S.C., and Rev. Wayne Hodge of Ruby; sisters, Audrey Parker of Ruby, Bonnie Parson of St. Peteresburg, FL, Louise Hancock of Ruby, Betty Boatwright of Columbia, S.C. and Judy Campbell of Chesterfield; several nieces, nephews and her faithful dog, Dusty.

Flonnie Sowell Robinson
JEFFERSON – Flonnie Sowell Robinson, 94, died Oct. 18, 2007 at CMC-Union. A funeral service was held Oct. 22 at Crossroad Baptist Church in Kershaw, S.C., with burial in the church cemetery.
Robinson, born in Kershaw, was a daughter of the late Bud Sampson and Lizzie Railey Sowell. She was a member of Crossroad Baptist Church and a member of the Golden Gates O.E.S. She was married to Early Robinson, Sr. and to this union eleven children were born. She was preceded in death by son Johnny Robinson.
Surviving are daughters, Mary (Billy) Parker of San Juan, CA, Sylvia Blackwell of Jefferson, and Rudene (Robert) Feldon of Englewood, NJ; sons, Early (Deloris) Robinson, Jr. of Chesapeake,VA, Dr. Waldo (Jean) Robinson, Hazel Robinson, and Elmore (Susie) Robinson all of Jefferson, Curtis Robinson of Tulsa, OK, Hade Robinson and Hiawatha (Shavson) Robinson both of Pageland; two granddaughters she raised as her own Kathy (Frankie) Danzy of Jefferson and Lavonne Robinson Sullivan of Charlotte, N.C.; nephew she raised David Robinson of Charlotte, N.C.; 28 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren; sister Flossie Clyburn of New York; host of other relatives and friends.

MONROE, N.C. - George William “Buddy” Courtney, 58, died October 13, 2007 at CMC-Union. A funeral service was held October 17 at Lee Park Baptist Church with burial in Lakeland Memorial Park cemetery. Courtney, born in Union County, was a son of the late Charles Augustus and Emmie Laney Courtney. He was a truck driver with Wayne Edwards & Son. JEFFERSON - Wayland Eubanks Sr., 84, died October 19, 2007. A funeral service was held October 21 at Jefferson United Methodist Church with burial in Jefferson cemetery. He was the son of the late Bun and Stella Belk Eubanks. He was retired from Walker Jordan Nissan with 50+ years. Surviving are wife Kathleen M. PAGELAND - Barbara L. Faulks,71, died October 13, 2007.
A graveside service was held October 16 at Wolf Pond Baptist Church cemetery. She was born in Pageland and was the daughter of the late Oscar and Estelle Mullis Laney.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Darlene Tucker. Surviving are sons, Ken Rape of Louisville, KY, Tony Stegall of Monroe, N.C., Brian Faulk of Pageland; daughter Patty Keeter of Monroe N.C.; sister Elizabeth Brooks of Long Beach, N.C.; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. William P. Kyler Sr.
CHESTERFIELD - William P. Kyler Sr., 88, died October 10, 2007 at Chestefield General Hospital, Cheraw. A funeral service was held October 15 at Word of Life Fellowship Church, Cheraw with burial in National Cemetery, Florence, S.C. Kyler, born in Beaufort, S.C., was a son of the late James and Elizabeth Pennington Kyler. At the age of seven he moved to New York City and graduated from Haaren High School. He then enlisted in the Army in 1944 during WWII,
he was honorably discharged in 1946. He then worked for the NYC Transit Authority as a dispatcher until he retired in 1980. After retirement he moved to Chesterfield and was a faithful member and Deacon of Lily of the Valley Holiness Church in Chesterfield. He served as Past 3rd Vice Commander of Johnson Lane American Legion Post 214. He was preceded in death by sister Marvelous Watson. Surviving are wife of 51 years, Leila M. Kyler; sons, William Kyler of Brooklyn, NY and Darrell (Cora) Kyler of Cheraw; daughter-in-law Dory Kyler of Chesterfield; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Dorothy Mae Covington Nicholson
LANCASTER,S.C. - Dorothy Mae Covington Nicholson, 60, died October 8, 2007. A funeral service was held October 13 at Black Creek Baptist Church, Mt. Croghan, with burial in the church cemetery. Nicholson, was born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of the late Deacon Carl and Reverend Mary Covington. She was a graduate of Petersburg High School, 1965, and was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church. She worked for Johnson Milling in Monroe, N.C. and was last employed with Wal-Mart Super Center, Lancaster, S.C. as a receiving clerk. She was preceded in death by children, Mary Denise Nicholson and Charles Nicholson; sister Barbara Jean Louallen; brother Leroy Covington; nephews Paul and Eric Price. Surviving are husband, Luther Charles Nicholson of Charlotte, N.C.; sons, Michael and Gary Nicholson of Pageland and Mitchell (Amanda) Nicholson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; brothers, Willie Thomas Covington, Carl (Sylvia) Covington and James Frank (Dorothy) Covington all of Pageland; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; and a host of sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. PATRICK - Master Tyler Montgomery Roscoe, 10, died October 13, 2007. Master Roscoe, born in Florence, S.C., was a son of Christopher Michael Roscoe of Chesterfield and Shannon Byrd Hughes of the home.He was a “Special Child” whose life touched all who knew him. He was preceded in death by grandfather Bill Byrd; great grandparents, Charlie and Sadie Byrd, Woodrow Chisholm, Chester and Nannie Roscoe, Lonnie and Edith Shoemake. Paul Edward Snipes
CHESTERFIELD — Paul Edward Snipes, 79, died September 25, 2007 at his home. A funeral service was held September 28 at White Oak Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery. Snipes, born in Charlotte, N.C., was a son of the late John Henry and Blanche Watts Snipes. He was a graduate of Ruby High School and a retired shipping supervisor with J.P. Stevens with 40 years of service. He received the first Employee of the Year Award in 1989 from J.P. Stevens. Paul was a faithful member of White Oak Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and choir member. He was also a former member and deacon of Douglas Mill Baptist Church. Mr. Snipes also served on the Board of Trustees of the Douglas Mill Cemetery Association, the building committee of the Douglas Mill Fellowship Building, and was a Watchman Representative for Hospice of Chesterfield County. Paul was an avid collector and restorer of classic Chevrolets and was best known for this 1955 Chevrolet convertible, which was used in the movie Shag. He received numerous awards throughout the Southeast for his classic cars. He also enjoyed farming and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Patricia Douglas Snipes; three brothers, Harold, Billy, and Leon Snipes; sisters, Johnsie Brantley and Mary Bess. John Lorenzo Allred
CHESTERFIELD — John Lorenzo Allred, 54, died Oct. 2, 2007. A funeral service was held Oct. 5 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Chesterfield Cemetery.
Allred, born in Cheraw, was a son of John J. and Tallie Mae White Allred. He was a former truck driver.
He was preceded in death by nephews John E. Miller and CWO-3 Michael Lee Hartwick Jr.
Surviving are son Phillip Allred, of Chesterfield; parents; sisters Cheryl (Kenneth) Miller, of Cheraw, Vickie (Steven) Cobb, of Parkville, Md., and Nancie (Charlie) Freeman, of California City, Calif.; nephews Dr. Kenneth Miller, Quentin Miller, Robert Hartwick and Richard Freeman; and nieces Rachel and Cassandra Freeman.

Sheila Ann Connors Bonilla
CHESTERFIELD — Sheila Ann Connors Bonilla, 55, died Sept. 27, 2007.
Bonilla, born in Quincy, Ill., was a daughter of the late Carl and Edna Dora Williams Connor.
Surviving are son Timothy Aldrich; daughter Cheryl Ann Shepherd, of Chesterfield; and grandchildren Matthew Eli and Quincy Antonio Shepherd.

Charles F. Caulder
CHERAW — Charles F. Caulder, 82, died Oct. 1, 2007 at his home. A funeral service was held Oct. 3 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Caulder born in Chesterfield County, was a son of the late Allie Jackson and Nezzie Rushing Caulder. He was a graduate of Cheraw High School and attended Clemson University. Caulder was a retired teacher with Cheraw High School. He was a Sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII, having completed 208 flights over the Hump as radio operator and mechanic. Caulder was a lifelong faithful member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, where he served as permanent Trustee and was chairman of the Cemetery Committee for many years. He enjoyed working on and restoring antique and classic cars.
Caulder was first married to the late Nathalie Short Caulder and then to the late Dezzie Hall Caulder, and was also preceded in death by a brother Edward L. Caulder, and by sisters Valdese Patterson and Katie Grant.
Surviving are son the Rev. Ronnie (Linda) Caulder, of Cheraw; daughters Sherrie (Jerry) Chapman and Cathey (Randy) Bedford, both of Cheraw, and Susan (John) Jennings, of Columbia; brother Jack Caulder, of Auburn,; sister Janie L. Howle, of Cheraw; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

CHESTERFIELD — Abbie Gandy Davis, 70, died Oct. 1, 2007. A graveside service was held Oct. 4 at Westfield Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Davis was born in Hartsville, S.C., a daughter of the late Leo and Blondell Timms Gandy. She was a graduate of Hartsville High School and Florence-Darlington Tech. and was a retired employee of Chesterfield Manufacturing Co. Davis was a member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church. She was first married to the late John D. Davis and then to the late Franklin “Big Frank” Davis Jr. and was preceded in death by brother Wayne Gandy.
Surviving are sons John Kyle (Robin) Davis, of Cheraw, and Franklin (Timmie) Davis III, of McFarlan, N.C.; daughters Amanda (Nathan Johnson) Davis, of Chesterfield, and Margie Lynn Davis, of Keavy, Ky.; brother Jerry (Sarah) Gandy, of Hartsville; grandchildren John Holden Davis, Kylie Marie Davis, Seth Gunner Johnson, Heather Lynn Davis, and Chris Smith.

Carolyn Margaret Mewshaw
CHESTERFIELD — Carolyn Margaret Mewshaw, died Oct. 4, 2007. A funeral service was held Oct. 6 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mewshaw lived in Pasedena, Md., but more recently in Chesterfield. After high school graduation she entered the Civil Air Patrol and then began her career as a U.S. Postal carrier. A devoted wife and mother, her childhood love of Girl Scouts was passed to her girls, as she became a leader for many years. Her life encompassed many adventures. She made many friends and was a special part of the lives she touched, but, most of all, her love for family is her greatest legacy.
She was preceded in death by parents Joseph and Marie Nieberlein; brother Joseph and granddaughter Lauren Anne Patch.
Surviving are husband of 48 years, Harry Clifton Mewshaw; daughters Donna (Brian) Muser, of Hanover, Pa., Robin (Philip) Patch, of Fredricksburg, Va., Karen (Gary) Cress, of Crownsville, Md., JoAnn (Shawn) Dimaggio, of Westminster, Md.; grandchildren Ronald, Barry Corey and Kaitlyn Muser, Allison and Hillary Patch, Erin and Gary Cress, Shawn Jr., Steven, Anthony, Rebekah and Alex Cress; great grandchild Damien James.

PAGELAND — Georgianna Brown Pate, 85, died Sept. 25, 2007 at CMC-Union, Monroe, N.C. A funeral service was held Sept. 29 at Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church with burial in the church Cemetery.
Pate, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of the late George Henry and Emma Brown. She attended school in Jefferson and was a member of Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church.
She was preceded in death by husband David Pate and son Randolph Brown.
Surviving are son, Jimmy Brown, of Pageland; daughters Dianne (Billy) Chamber of Pageland and Shirley (Patrick) Sekle, of Charlotte, N.C.; brother Evan (Maggaline) Brown, of Charlotte, N.C.; 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

PAGELAND — Naomi Robinson, 95, died Sept. 24, 2007 at CMC-Union, Monroe, N.C. A funeral service was held Sept. 30 at Flemming Funeral Chapel with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery.
Robinson, born in Pageland, was a daughter of the late Aaron and Susie Lockhart Robinson.
She was preceded in death by five sisters and five brothers.

Steele, born in Anson County, N.C. was a son of the late Julius and Mary Caroline Baker Steele. He was a retired farmer.

Turley was a daughter of Westie Carpenter Kearse and the late William Robinson. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are husband Robert Turley; mother Westie Kearse, of Lawndale, N.C.; sons Donald Whitten, of Kannapolis, N.C., Gary Whitten, of Cheraw, Shawn Whitten, of Wallace, S.C., and Tybrent Whitten, of Monroe, N.C.; daughter Denise Bowers, of Burnsville, N.C.; brother Lee Robinson, of Gastonia, N.C.; sister Katie Millson, of Lawndale, N.C.; nine grandchildren, one great grandchild.
