Booker T. Chambers Sr.
PAGELAND — Minister Booker T. Chambers Sr., 69, died June 30, 2008 at CMC-Union in Monroe, N.C. Funeral services were held July 5 at New Meltonville Missionary Baptist Church in Peachland, N.C. He was the son of the late Martin Chambers and Christine Chambers and was born on June 2, 1939 in Anson County, N.C. He was a member of the New Meltonville Missionary Baptist Church in Peachland for many years. He also attended Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church in Jefferson, S.C. He retired from Cuddy Farms in 1990 after many years of loyal service. Minister Chambers loved helping others, fishing, spending time with his family but most of all he loved to praise God. He also managed the Swanee’s of Pageland for many years. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Margie L. Chambers; two sons, Booker T. Chambers, Jr. (Bernadette) and Robert L. Price (Candida) of Pageland; three daughters, Margie T. Hall (Howard) of Pageland, Bernadette Benton (Floyd) of Charlotte, N.C., and Courtney Chambers (Sy’myles Coleman) of the home; four sisters, Alma Jane Cole of Washington, D.C., Willie Mae Moser, Juanita Crawford, and Vennie Lee Crawford all of Pageland, S.C.; three brothers whom he raised, Rev. Andrew Chambers (Karen) of Wadesboro, N.C., Lloyd Crawford (Deborah) of Pageland, and Frederick Crawford (Shelia) of Monroe, N.C.; eleven grandchildren, Tralves, Charlene, Marvin, Howard Jr., Chiquita, Candiesha, Simonia, Samantha, Tyliyah, Jade, and Robert, Jr.; a great grandchild, Jordan Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters: Margaret Johnson and Cynthia Crawford; three brothers, Thurman Chambers, Bill Chambers, and Thomas Chambers; a granddaughter, Synora Bra’shay Coleman and a brother-in-law, Rev. Walter Cole.

Ronald L. ‘Pop’ Gulledge
Charlotte, N.C. — Ronald L. “Pop” Gulledge, 56, died July 7, 2008 at Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region. Services were held July 11 at McEwen Pineville Chapel with interment at the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield.
Gulledge was the son of the late Lloyd Samuel Gulledge and Ruby Brock Gulledge. He is preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Gulledge, Jr.
Surviving are wife of 31 years: Linda Gulledge of the home; children Kimberly Murphy and her husband Richard Murphy of Salisbury, N.C.; Scott Tolliver of Charlotte, N.C., Rhonda Gulledge, and Renee Gulledge of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren Jordan and Kelsie Murphy; brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Sherry Gulledge of Charlotte, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law Jeanne and Bill Schmidt of Newton, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Alvin Dewain ‘A.D.’ Hurst Sr.
MORVEN, N.C. - Alvin Dewain “A.D.” Hurst Sr., 84, died July 8, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center-Union. A funeral service was held July 11, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in the Ratliff Family Cemetery at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, Casons Old Field, N.C.
Hurst, born in Chesterfield, S.C. and was the son of Novella Campbell and Finley Thomas Hurst. He was a loving and much loved and adored husband, father, and grandfather. He attended Clemson University and was a U. S. Navy Veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre. He was employed by the United States Postal Service for 34 years and worked in the Chesterfield, and Rock Hill offices. He retired as Postmaster in McFarlan, N.C. He was a devoted Christian, a kindhearted and generous man with unquestionable integrity. He was affectionately known as “Pop”. His great pastime and avocation was the training of field trial bird dogs. He received the H. Cooper Black, Jr. Sportsmanship and Sportsman of the Year Award in 1998-99. In 2002, he was inducted into the South Carolina Bird Dog Hall of Fame. He served as President of the Chesterfield Field Trial Club for many years. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Wesley Fellowship Class, the Men’s Club, and served on the Administrative Board. Hurst was preceded in death by his brothers, Leverne Thomas Hurst, and Billy Campbell Hurst and a sister, Myrtis Hurst Teal. Surviving are: Beloved Wife of 61 years, Sue Gulledge Hurst of the home; daughter, Susanne Hurst McGuire and her husband, William Bulgin McGuire, Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Alvin Dewain Hurst, Jr. and his wife, Anna Young Hurst of Morven, N.C.; grandchildren, Caroline Robinson McGuire of New York, NY, William Hurst McGuire of Charlotte, N.C., Molly Lauer McGuire of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Ruby Hurst Teal of Winnsboro, S.C.; also numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Helen J. Lewis
CHESTERFIELD — Helen J. Lewis, 78, died July 08, 2008. A funeral service was held July 11, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Bay Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
Lewis, born in Chesterfield, S.C. a daughter of the late Fletcher and Berta Therrell Johnson. She was a retired employee of Chesterfield Dress Company and a member of Bay Springs Baptist Church. Lewis was a devoted Mother who loved her family dearly. She was an avid pet lover, who enjoyed cooking and working outdoors. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, William Legette Lewis, brothers, Fletcher Johnson, Jr. and W.M. Johnson, and sisters, Margaret Ann Rivers, Beatrice Bill, and Frances Nolan.

Wilton Gary Lewallen
HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Wilton Gary Lewallen, 65, died July 8, 2008. A funeral service was held July 10, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Patrick Cemetery.
Lewallen, born in Banks County, GA the son of the late Wilton Benjamin Lewallen and Malisse McFarlin. Born in Homer, GA, Lewallen lived in Toccoa, GA and has resided in Patrick, S.C. for the past 28 years. He was a former employee of Coats & Clark in Toccoa, GA for 19 years, also Bartlett Nuclear, Inc, and has worked in the Nuclear Profession for 28 years. Gary was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. Lewallen was a graduate of Stephens County High School, attended North Georgia Technical School, and received his degree in Computer Science from Northeastern Technical College in Cheraw, S.C. Gary was a member of the Toccoa-Stephens County Jaycees where he served as a director. He was an avid Nascar fan, enjoyed Atlanta Braves baseball, and loved Georgia Bulldog Football. George F. Moore
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — George F. Moore, 75 died July 9, 2008 at his home. A graveside service was held July 12, 2008 at White Oak Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Ruby. Moore, born in Newell, N.C. a son of the late George and Viola Wyatt Moore. He was a retired roofer. He was preceded in death by his brother, Buck Moore; and a granddaughter, Michelle Terry.

HARTSVILLE — Robert Jay Wilkes, Jr., 46, died July 6, 2008 at his home. A graveside service was held July 10, 2008 at Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Wilkes, born in Hartsville, S.C. a son of Robert Jay “Bobby” Wilkes, Sr. and Margaret Wallace Odom. He retired from the restaurant business and attended Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church.
Surviving are: daughter, Casey Roscoe of Wallace; father, Bobby (Barbara) Wilkes of Chesterfield;

Percy Ney Baker
PAGELAND — U.S. Veteran Percy Ney Baker, 91, died June 29, 2008. Services were held July 3 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with interment following at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Baker was an army veteran of WWII. He was also a former member of the Masons and Shriners. Baker was a lifelong farmer. He is the son of the late Daniel and Mary Elizabeth Sweatt Baker.
Baker is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Grace Baker and Scott and Eunice Baker of Monroe, N.C.; grandchildren Benjamin Ney Baker, Kenneth David Baker, Daniel Riston Baker, Adam Scott Baker, Sharon Elizabeth Jones, Laura Anne Bell, Amy Elizabeth Kirkley and 8 great grandchildren.

Maxine Hendrick Boan
CHERAW —Maxine Hendrick Boan, 77, died July 5, 2008. Services were held July 7 at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw.
Boan was the daughter of the late J. Blair and Bernice MooreHendrick. She was a graduate of Mt. Croghan High School andPfeiffer Junior College. Boan retired from the ChesterfieldCounty School District and was a member of Pleasant Hill BaptistChurch.

HATTIESBURG, MISS. — Sue L. Gardner, 88, died June 30, 2008. Services were held July 5 at Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Ballard presiding.
Gardner retired from a large department store in Richmond, Va. She was a former member of the Ray of Hope Church of Richmond, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Gardner, Sr.
She is survived by sons Joseph M. Gardner, Jr. of Hattiesburg, Miss., and John R. Gardner of McKinney, Texas, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Frank Huntley
CHESTERFIELD — Frank Huntley, 86, died July 1, 2008. Services were held July 3 at Hopewell Baptist Church with interment following in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.
Born in Chesterfield, Huntley was a son of the late William Elisha and Mary Elizabeth Sellers Huntley. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School class of 1940, and was owner and operator of Huntley’s Garage. He was a member and former deacon of Hopewell Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion Post # 74.
Surviving are wife of 61 years Flora Belle Sellers Huntley, son Keith (Beth) Huntley of Chesterfield; daughter Faye (Rickey) Williams of Chesterfield; grandson Will (Erin) Huntley of Pittsburgh, Pa.; great granddaughter Aubree Huntley of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and sister Virginia Huntley (Joe) Travis of Charlotte, N.C.

Sylvia A. Knight
JEFFERSON — Sylvia A. Knight, 71, died July 4, 2008. Services were held July 7 at Rocky Creek Presbyterian Church with interment following in the church cemetery.
Born in Jefferson, Knight was a daughter of the late Robert David and Thelma Ratliff Knight. She was a member of Rocky Creek Presbyterian Church. Sylvia’s life touched many people and she will greatly be missed by her family and her extended family at Chesterfield Convalescent Center.
Surviving are brothers Carl (Betty Jo) Knight, and Billy Joe Knight all of Jefferson, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Clarence T. Lockhart
JEFFERSON — Clarence T. Lockhart, 85, died June 19, 2008.
Service ere held June 29 at Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church in Jefferson, with burial at Mt. Harmon Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Pageland.
Lockhart, a native of Chesterfield County, was born to the late Mary Lockhart Sturdivant. During his life, Lockhart was a member of Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and chairman of the trustee board, president of the male choir, chairman of the lay council and 30 years as the church school superintendent.
On March 6, 1943, Lockhart enlisted in the U.S. Army entering active service 11 days later March 15. He was stationed at Ft. Jackson, S.C., and served in World War II. Lockhart received the Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal before being honorably discharged from the service Nov. 20, 1945.
Before retiring, Lockhart worked in factory and as a logger. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and telling a good joke.
Lockhart was preceded in death by wife Maggie Bracey and son Leroy T. Lockhart.
Lockhart is survived by children Vera Wade and Mary Lynn Miller, of Pageland; Vickie (Calvin) Clark, of Jefferson; Laura Miller, of Charlotte, N.C.,; Peggie (Sterling) Dorsey, of Capital Heights, Md.; Clarence Junior (Linda) Lockhart, of Gaithersburg, Md.; Grayland Lockhart, of Washington D.C.; Billy Lockhart, of Augusta, Ga.; and Ronnie (Tonya) Lockhart and Darrell Lockhart, of Fairfax, Va.; sister Katherleen (James) Jones, of Washington, D.C.; aunts Tressie Moore and Goleva Massey, of Pageland; uncle Matthew Lockhart, of Pageland; sisters-in-law Sarah L. Bracey and Nannie Bracey, of Pageland, brothers-in-law Lee Blakeney, of Washington, D.C., and Jimmy Bracey, of Pageland; 37 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; five great, great grandchildren; special friend Doretha Blakeney, of Pageland; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Dorothy Taylor Miller
Jefferson — Dorothy Taylor Miller, 85, of Jefferson, passed away on July 2, 2008. Services were held July 4 at the Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Taylor and Norma Rowell, husband, Robert Miller and sister, Wynona Eubanks.
Surviving are daughters, Roberta Sneed (Michael) of Monroe, N.C. and Dottie Hill (Dave) of Monroe, N.C., grandchildren, Mark, Steven and Jason Hill and one great grandchild Parker Lynn Hill.

Francis Marion Odom
CHESTERFIELD — Francis Marion Odom, 82, died June 29, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter, S.C. Services were held July 2 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Born in Bennettsville, Odom was a son of the late Richard Harris and Mary Ellen Quick Odom. He faithfully attended Friendship United Methodist Church until his health began to decline. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. Francis was the last surviving member of his family of 3 sisters, Helen O. Creech, Pearl O. McDonald, and Cornelia O. Mitchell; and 6 brothers, Rev, Richard Harris Odom, Jr., Elbert Odom, John Earl Odom, James Edward Odom, Vester Odom and Paul Odom. He was preceded in death by wife of 61 years Julia Rae Freeman Odom.
Surviving are daughter Carolyn O. (Don) Ballard; granddaughter Mallory Leigh Leviner; and great granddaughter Kendall Leigh Pierson all of Sumter, S.C.

MONROE, N.C. — Roy Franklin Sims, 70, died July 1, 2008. Services were held at Philadelphia Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery.
Sims was the son of the late Herbert Lee and Frances Miller Sims.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Rogers Sims of Monroe, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law. Phillip and Laura Sims of Charlotte, N.C.; and granchild, Tyler Sims.

Born in Cheraw, Stafford was a daughter of the late Rosia Nevel Linton and Margaret AycockLinton Davis. She was a homemaker and member of Forest PinesChurch. Cindy was preceded in death by a brother, Ricky Alan Linton and by a sister, Brenda Faye Sims.
Surviving are husband Joe E. Stafford of the home; son Timothy Tipton of Gate City, Va.; daughter Amanda Lynn Wilson of Cheraw; stepdaughters Joanna Stafford, Jennifer S. Synora Bra Shae Coleman
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Synora Bra Shae Coleman, died June 19, 2008 at her home. A graveside service was held June 26, 2008 at Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church with burial in the church cemetery. Coleman, born in Charlotte, a daughter of Sy-Miles Coleman and Courtney Chambers.
She was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Wayne Anthony Andrews and Lucille Andrews, Johnnie Mae Coleman, Paul Price and Fodie McNair Price. Surviving are: her parents; grandparents, Mr. and Booker T. Chambers, Sr of Pageland; Sylvia Coleman of Charlotte; and a host of uncles, aunts, other relatives and friends.

Walter Preston Bruner
CHERAW — Walter Preston Bruner, age 87, died Thursday, June 19, 2008. Services were held June 22 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with interment following in the church cemetery.
Bork in Cheraw, Bruner was a son of the late George Harmon and Margaret Christine Hammonds Bruner. He was a retired employee of Jackson Oil Company and was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. Bruner was a member of the WOW Lodge 516 for over 50 years. He was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church where he served in various positions in the church, including the Administrative Council, Cemetery Committee, Sunday school teacher, and Men’s Club. He was also a faithful member of the choir for 40 years. Walter was a humble man with a strong faith and was committed to and loved his family and church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Bernice Bruner Jones Fisher, and by his three brothers, Paul Boyd, John Thomas and George Harman Bruner.

Joyce Ann Krapp
SOCIETY HILL — Joyce Ann Krapp, 51, died June 16, 2008 at her home. A funeral service was held June 19, 2008 at Flemming Funeral Chapel in Cheraw.
Krapp, born in Rockingham, was a daughter of the late Ishmel and Wilma Hawkins. She attended the public schools of Richmond County of NNC. She was employed with INA Bearing of Cheraw, until her health failed. She had several hobbies including painting, crocheting and entertaining friends and family. She enjoyed spending time with her special pet Dachshunds, Amber and Ace.
She was preceded in death by brother, Thomas Walter Hawkins.

Mt. Croghan — Tracy Emmett Sikes, age 91, died June 20, 2008 at his home. Services were held June 23, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in the Mt. Croghan Memorial Park.
Born in Mt. Croghan, Sikes was a son of the late Jack and Blanche Lowery Sikes. He was a farmer and a retired employee of Burlington Industries with 32 years of service. Sikes was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed his cattle and fox hunting. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. Tracy was married to the late Analiza Burch Sikes and was also preceded in death by his son-in-law Ronny W. Cato and his 5 brothers, Rudolph, Owen, William, Jewel, and Eli Sikes, and his sister Eunice Sikes Rayfield.

Clarksville, Tenn. — John Lunn Streater, 74, died June 8, 2008 after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held June 16 at Hopkinsville VA Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Ky.
Streater was the oldest child of the late Lonnie Streater and the late Candys Hillian Streater. After graduating from high school, he joined the US Army and served 24 years of active duty. He retired with an honorable discharge after a successful career. Mr. Streater graduated from Austin Peay University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He pursued his career until his health began to fail him.
Streater was married to the former Josephine Sanders. To this marital union two children were born: Juan L. Streater of Altus, Oklahoma and Jody L. Streater of Clarksville, Tennessee. Two grandchildren: Juan Streater, Jr. of Germany and Michelle Streater of Altus, Oklahoma.

Horne, born in Ruby, was a son of the late David Lester and Allie Cornelia Gulledge Horne. He was a graduate of Ruby High School and was a retired employee with Delta Mills with 32 years of service. Horne was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the WOW Lodge 516, American Legion Post 74, and Elizabeth Baptist Church. John was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and farming. He was preceded in death by his two brothers Joyce Horne and David Horne and by his sister Henrietta Horne. JEFFERSON – John Edward Chambers Jr., 65 died June 5, 2008 at the Guardian Care Facility in Monroe, N.C. A funeral service was held June 11, 2008 at Rock Hill AME Zion Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Chambers, born in Chesterfield County, a son of john Chambers and the late Eva Mae Williams Chambers. He attended the Chesterfield County public school system. He worked various jobs during his tenure, but there was none he loved more than truck driving. He drove trucks for over 25 years. He was a kind, fun, and loving man. If there was anything he could do to assist anyone, he would.

Wallace, born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Sadie Robinson Blakeney. She was employed as a textile worker, and later she retired as a hostess in the restaurant industry. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She instilled the values of respectability, honesty, and always honoring Christ as the Savior. She taught her family to love one another.

CHERAW - Dr. Francis Joseph “Frank” Condon, 49, died May 31, 2008.

Dr. Condon born, in New Rochelle, NY, a son of Beverly Jones Condon and the late Francis Joseph Condon. He was a graduate of University California at Irbine, Truman State University, and Michigan State University, where he received his doctorate degree in internal medicine. Dr. Condon was a dedicated physician, who enjoyed caring for his patients at Condon Medical Services. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast. He enjoyed Michigan State basketball and football, cooking, playing the guitar, and singing.

PAGELAND—Rudell Danzy Miller, 72, died May 29, 2008. A funeral service was held June 2 at Nicey Grove Baptist Church in Pageland. Mrs. Miller was born September 28, 1935 to the late Willie and Edell Danzy Blackmon in Lee County, S.C. She joined Nicey Grove Baptist Church at an early age, where she served faithfully until her health failed. Throughout the years she served on the Usher Board, Prayer Warriors, Gospel Choir, and many other auxiliaries in the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Miller; one son, Leverne Miller; brother, Joe Nathan Williams; and a sister, Loretta Brown. HEATH SPRINGS, S.C.—Benjamin T. Truesdale, 86, died Sat. May 31, 2008 at Springs Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held June 3 at Flint Ridge Baptist Church. He was born November 8, 1921 in Kershaw County, the son of the late Forrest Truesdale and Lula Mae Jones Truesdale and was the husband of the late Polly Blackmon Truesdale. Mr. Truesdale retired from Springs Industries Grace Bleachery and was a member of Flint Ridge Baptist Church. He was a decorated World War II Veteran for the United States Army and won 5 Bronze Service Stars in Southern France. He is survived by his son Michael Ben “Mike” Truesdale and his wife Sandra of Lancaster, a daughter, Helen T. Hayes of Pageland, 6 grandchildren, Crystal Rogers, Amanda Chester, Paula Price, Tori Teal, Anna Truesdale, and Kayla Truesdale and 12 great grandchildren. Mrs. Tucker born, Texas, a daughter of the late Horrie H. and Myrtle Kissiah Privette. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lake City Church of God. Mrs. Tucker was married to the late Ernest Tucker and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Elaine Jones, brother, Levin Privette, and sister, Ethel Small.

Courtney, born in Jefferson, S.C., the daughter of the late Samuel and Inez (Plyler) Crook. She was a homemaker. She attended High Point Baptist Church in Pageland. She was predeceased by her husband, Emory Courtney in 2000.

CHESTERFIELD — James Ruben Marshall, 68, died May 22, 2008 at his home in Chesterfield, S.C. after an extended illness. Funeral services were held May 26 at Ramah Grove Baptist Church in McFarlan, N.C. with Pastor Eric Edwards officiating.
Affectionately known as “Ruby,” Marshall was born Dec. 10, 1939 in Anson County, to the late Robert L. Marshall and Winnie Royal Marshall. He was an agriculturalist for many years.
He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Robert and Lee Boyd.

Mrs. Brock, born Chesterfield, S.C. a daughter of Mattie Lua Gardner Rivers and the late John Weldon Rivers. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High and retired as office manager with Chesterfield Manufacturing Co. Mrs. Brock was a lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist Church where she was a member of the UMW, the Ladies Bible Class, and served as former Trustee, and MYF Counselor. Melba was married to the late John Henry Brock and was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Lou Davis.

Gardner was born October 13, 1933 in Chesterfield, a son of the late Lawrence Nelson and Sarah Frances Hunter Gardner. He was a retired Industrial Pipe Fitter. Gardner was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed flea markets and auctions. He was preceded in death by a son, Brian Gardner, a brother, Coyt Gardner, 2 sisters, Lillian Rayfield and Jean Davis.

CHERAW — Mary Steen Melton, 85, died Monday, May 19, 2008. Born in Bennettsville, S.C. she was a daughter of the late Hope and Minnie Roscoe Steen. She was the widow of Robert C. Melton. She was a member of Windsor Park Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed Fishing, Gardening and Bible Study.
Surviving are her sons, Robert E. Melton, James Michael Melton, Richard L. Melton all of Cheraw, S.C., a daughter, Mary Ann (Kenny) Bradshaw of Hartsville, S.C., sisters, Marcella Keith of Spartanburg, S.C., Martha Melton and Frances Reynolds both of Cheraw, S.C., Margaret Chavis and Lillian Pope both of Bennettsville, S.C., 6 Grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

George N. Wallace Jr.
PAGELAND — George N. Wallace Jr., 69, died May 17, 2008, at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of Chesterfield County. A funeral service was held May 19, 2008 at Wolf Pond Baptist Church with burial to follow at the church cemetery.
Wallace was born in Union County to George N. Wallace Sr. and Gladys Wensil Wallace Knight. He retired from Textrol Industries where he was a Supervisor and Machinist for many years. He was an active member of Wolf Pond Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher and was involved in many church activities.

Jesse Edward ‘Big Bug’ Edgeworth Jr.
Jesse Edward “Big Bug” Edgeworth Jr., 50, died May 6, 2008 in Rockingham, N.C. A funeral services was held May 12 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Pageland.
He was the son of Jesse Edgeworth Sr. and the late Annis Funderburk Edgeworth and was born Nov. 10, 1957 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Jesse was educated in the public schools of Pageland, S.C. and at a young age started helping his uncle in the carpet installation business. This trade was his chosen profession and he loved it dearly. Jesse was a very generous and lovable person and was known for his humor and kindness. He attended Pentecostal Assemble Holiness Church in Cheraw, S.C. where he confessed Jesus Christ as his personal savior.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Annis Funderburk Edgeworth and brother, Rodney J. Edgeworth.
Survivors include wife Beverly, of Cheraw; daughters, Taketa “Brandi” Davis (Va Quadis), ALezia “Lacy” Edgeworth, Kimbely Edgeworth, all of Charlotte, N.C.; step-son, Ronnie Lane (Vanessa) of Salisbury, N.C.; step-daughters, Tushina Clark of Charlotte, N.C., Angie Lane (Richard) of Cheraw, S.C. and Jannetta Peterkin (Barry) of Wallace, S.C.; his father, Jesse E. Gulledge was born Nov. 18, 1924 in Ruby, a son of the late James Arthur and Rosa Lee James Gulledge. He retired after 24 years as owner of The Country Store in Ruby, S.C. Gulledge was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII and was a member of the Mt. Croghan-Ruby American Legion Post 134. He was a faithful member of Ruby Baptist Church. Henry was an avid fisherman and enjoyed cooking and helping his friends.
He was preceded in death by sisters Frances “Polly” Payne and Nancy Gulledge.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years Juanita King Gulledge of the home, sisters Crystal Faile of Fort Lawn, S.C. and Bessie (Bronze) Rorie of Pageland, and a number of nieces and nephews including Beth and Henry Suggs and their children Bryce and Alex.

Charles Ray Atkinson
MT. CROGHAN — Charles Ray Atkinson, 84, died May 3, 2008.
A funeral service was held May 6, 2008 at Mt. Croghan Baptist Church with burial will follow at the Mt. Croghan Memorial Park.
Atkinson, born in Mt. Croghan, S.C. a son of the late Thomas Hendrick and Hilda Burch Atkinson. He was a graduate of Mt. Croghan High School and attended Clemson College. Atkinson was retired owner of Atkinson Texaco and was also associated with Tri – State Trucking and Chesterfield Drug Company. He was a veteran of WW II having served as a Second Engineer in the American Merchant Marines. Charles Ray was a faithful member of Mt. Croghan Baptist Church, where he served as Church Treasurer for many years.
Surviving are: wife of 60 years, Edith Dalrymple Atkinson of the home; sons, Tommy (Libby) Atkinson of Chesterfield, and Barry (Martha Kay) Atkinson of Laurens, S.C.; daughter, Karen (Ralph) Watson of Chesterfield;
sister, Margaret A. Huntley of Ruby; grandchildren, Kevin (Gena) Atkinson of Lexington, S.C., Jason (Britton) Atkinson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Dan (Amanda) Atkinson of Greer, S.C., Mandy Atkinson of Laurens, S.C., Candice Watson of Forest City, N.C., and Derek Watson of Chesterfield, S.C.

PAGELAND —Vera Funderburk Campbell, 82, died April 18, 2008. She was born in Chesterfield County, S.C. to the late Henry Luther and Ida Threatt Funderburk. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe J. Campbell. She is survived by 2 sisters: Lois McManus and Shirley Hancock of Pageland and was preceded in death by her brothers: Reece, L.H., and Don Funderburk. Joyce H. Douglas
TAYLORS, S.C. — Joyce H. Douglas, 71, wife of Elwyn K. Douglas, died May 1, 2008 at McCall Hospice House. Born in Pageland, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Jesse Roscoe and Fannie Price Hathaway. Douglas was retired from the Greenville County School District and a member of Lee Road Baptist Church. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are sons Keith (Janice) Douglas of Greer, Barry (Renita) Douglas of Taylors; grandchildren, David and Kellie Douglas and Chad and Ali Reece. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Gardner Holley and a brother, Richard Hathaway. Memorials may be made to Lee Road Baptist Church, 1503 E. WALLACE — Margaret Cumber Hatcher, 83 died May 4, 2008 at her home. A funeral service was held May 7, 2008 at Cheraw Church of God with burial in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Hatcher, born in Marlboro County, S.C. a daughter of the late Eldridge and Rachel Steen Cumber. She was a retired textile employee. Hatcher was a member of Cheraw Church of God and attended Oak Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother Ed Cumber, and by three sisters, Lee English, Lib Watson, and Hazel Elkins.

PAGELAND — Evelyn Jordan MacAdams, 76, died May 3, 2008.
A funeral service was held May 5, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
MacAdams, born in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Arthur and Lula Hunter Jordan. She was a retired Branch Manager with Safeway Finance Company. MacAdams was preceded in death by a son Mike Long, brothers, Carson, Julius, Ward, Everette, and Van Jordan, and sisters, Consolo Jordan and Billie McManus.

JEFFERSON — Beatrice Davis Maples, 80, died May 1, 2008. A funeral ser, May 4, 2008 at Macedonia Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Maples, born in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Dewey Thurman and Reba Clariece Stanton Davis. She was a homemaker and an avid flower gardener. Beatrice was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. She was married to the late Jesse Maples and was also preceded in death by sisters, Peggy Dale Davis, Mary Frances Hayes, and Lois Robertson.
Surviving are: brother and sister in law, Bobby and Barbara Davis of Indian Trail, N.C.; a number of nieces and nephews.

John Edward Miller
JEFFERSON—John Edward Miller (a.k.a. James Daniel), 66, died April 30, 2008 at CMC-Union in Monroe, N.C. Services were held May 4 at Hopewell United Methodist Church in Jefferson. He was the son of the late Marshall Miller and the late Axie McMillan Miller and was born Jan. 27, 1942 in Jefferson. At a young age, he joined Hopewell United Methodist Church and attended the Chesterfield County Schools. In 1958 at the age of sixteen, he moved to New York, New York where he worked and retired from the Liberty Letter Service. He was a faithful member of McClinton Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Miller, his mother, Axie M. Miller, a brother, Marshall Miller, Jr., and a sister, Doretha Miller. Surviving are two daughters, Soraya Miller-Ansah (Benjamin) and Tarita Miller both of New York, N.Y.; a son, John Edward Miller, Jr. of New York, N.Y.; his father, Marshall Miller Sr. of Jefferson, S.C.; two sisters, Martha Miller and Genevieve M. Robinson both of Jefferson, S.C.; five brothers, Roosevelt Miller (Minnie), David Miller (Donna) both of Pageland, S.C., Ulysses Miller (Brenda), Howard Miller (Patricia) both of Jefferson, S.C. and Robert Miller (Lula) of Mt. Croghan, S.C.; three grandchildren, Shantel, Kyle, and DeShawn; an uncle, Samuel McMillian (Roberta); an aunt, Gladys McMillan; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

James Henry Mullis

PAGELAND — James Henry Mullis, 69, died May 7, 2008 at CMC in Charlotte, N.C. He was born March 28,1939 in Union County, N.C., a son of the late Kemp Pernay Mullis and the late Janie Ellen Deason Mullis. Mullis is survived by four sons: James Mullis of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Ricky Mullis, Rodney Mullis, and Reggie Mullis all of Pageland; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; two sisters: Ercel Laney of Monroe, N.C. and Kathryn Gaddy of Marshville, N.C., also his former wife, Patsy Mullis Langley of Pageland. Funeral services were held May 10 at Beulah Prebyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Mike Rogers and Rev. Brian Arrant, with burial following in the church cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to Beulah Presbyterian Church, 8305 Landsford Road, Monroe, N.C., 28112. McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is serving the family of Mullis.

Caldwell Blakeney
PAGELAND – Caldwell Blakeney, 82 died March 29, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. A funeral service was held April 3, 2008 at Salem United Methodist Church where he was a member.
Blakeney, born in Pageland, was educated in the public schools of Chesterfield County. He joined Second Presbyterian Church early in life. Later, he joined Salem United Methodist Church, where he attended and served faithfully until his illness. He retired from Akers Trucking Company in Charlotte. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and received an Honorable Discharge. He was a quite, soft-spoken, mild-mannered person who enjoyed helping others. He was always busy transporting people in the community. He was preceded in death by brothers, Walter, Curtis, Dillon, Butler, Whiteford, William Maceo and Ardist; sisters, Verla, Eve, Mavis, Avis, Susie, Luzetta and Clarice.
Surviving are: daughter, Terrie L. Joyner; brother, Carnell Blakeney; sisters, Elmer McNair and Marcene Timmons both of Charlotte, Ernestine Gantt of Columbia, Peggy Coleman of Manhattan, New York, Nettie Adams and Elsie Miller both of Pageland; many nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

Elizabeth Clontz Demby
PAGELAND – Elizabeth Clontz Demby, 76 died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at the Jesse Helms Nursing Center in Monroe, N.C. A funeral service was held April 26 at 11:00 AM at Zion United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Diagnosed in December 2004, Lib fought a courageous battle with ALS which she faced with a strong faith in God, inner strength and determination.
Demby, was daughter of the late J. Boyce and Jennie M. Clontz. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend. She loved her church where she spent many hours volunteering her time, serving on various committees, and is a past Sunday school teacher and choir member at Zion Methodist Church in Pageland. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Shirley Yvonne Clontz.
Surviving are: husband, Claude R. Demby, of 50 years; son, Gregory Demby; brothers, Joe (Amelia) Clontz of Pageland, Harold (Carolyn) Clontz of Oakboro, Larry (Wanda) Clontz of Monroe; sister, Judy (Timothy) Tucker of Charlotte and many neices, nephews and friends. CHESTERFIELD - Robert Allison Griffith, 50, April 22, 2008. A funeral service was held April 24, 2008 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with burial in the Chesterfield Cemetery.
Griffith, born in Monroe, N.C. a son of Robert H. “Bobby” and Betty Dalrymple Griffith. He was a 1976 graduate of Chesterfield High School and was owner of Robert’s Rib. Robert was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and Chesterfield Service Club. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Ducks Unlimited. Robert was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family in the mountains.

McCray, born in Lancaster County, S.C., daughter of the late Thomas W and Hattie Plyler Laney and married the late Marion H. McCray. McCray was pre-deceased by sons, Tommy and Harvey McCray; grandchild, Troxten and great-granddaughter, Sydney McCray.

Smith born, in Chesterfield, S.C.., a son of the late Henry Flanagan and Annie Gulledge Smith. He was a retired truck driver and a U. S. Navy Veteran. Smith was a member of Oakland Baptist Church. J. C. was married to the late Selma Rae Burr Smith, and was also preceded in death by an infant son, a daughter, Monica Ann Smith, brothers, Donald, Levy, Everett, and Douglas Smith, and sisters, Myrtle Weatherford and Thelma Menzo.

West was a faithful charter member of the First Freewill Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher, Church treasurer, and Choir director for over 30 years. Joann was married to the late Reverend William Junior West.

Deese, born in Chesterfield, a son of the late Maxie and Iris James Deese. He was a retired employee of the S.C. Department of Transportation. Deese was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of Clanton Plains Baptist Church. Bobby was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Gulledge; brothers, M.C. “Teat”, Carl, John Henry, and Billy Deese; and sisters, Louise Gulledge, and Carolyn “Peachie” Odom.

Robert ‘Bro’ Lee Dennis Sr.
CHERAW — Robert ‘Bro’ Lee Dennis Sr., 87, died April 6, 2008. Funeral services were held April 12 at the Flemming Funeral Chapel in Cheraw. He was the son of the late D. V. Brundage and Jordan Dennis and was born August 23, 1920 in Eatonton, Georgia. Robert was educated in the Eatonton public schools system. He met and married Eloise Sasnett on April 13, 1940 in Eatonton, Georgia and to this union eight children were born. The family relocated to Miami, Florida in 1944. Robert worked for Standard Oil Company for many years. Robert served in the United States Navy and enlisted in the services on April 24, 1944. He retired from Miami Service Company and later moved to Cheraw and lived in the Chesterfield Court Apartments. He was preceded in death by a loving wife, Eloise; a son, Robert Jr.; a daughter, Amelia Bradely; three grandchildren, Ralph McQueen, Gregory Allen, and Kaseem Bradley; a great grandchild, Kayla M. Dider; a sister, Louise Edwards, and a beloved son-in-law, Hazel McQueen. Survivors include two sons, Lee Andrew Dennis and Eugene Dennis, both of Miami, Fla.; a step son, Faite (Barbara) Millines of Oxnard, C.A.; three daughters, Dorothy Hildreth, Marjorie (Andrew) Allen, both of Miami, Fla., and Gloria McQueen of Cheraw; a nephew, Sanford (Lois) Edwards of Macon, Ga.; his beloved caregiver, Tawana Carmichael of Cheraw; his nurse, Barbara Watson of Cheraw; thirty grandchildren, sixty-nine great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mary Ella Horton
SUMMERVILLE, S.C.- Mary Ella Horton died April 7, 2008, at the Presbyterian Village in Summerville, S.C. Horton was the daughter of the late Herbert A. Horton, Sr., and Alice Mackey Horton of Lancaster, S.C.
She was born in Heath Springs, S.C. in 1910, and moved to Lancaster, S.C. where she and her brothers and sister attended school. She received her BA from Winthrop University, Graduating with a major in French in 1931. She taught school in Chesterfield and Abbeville, S.C. for several years before moving to Norfolk, Va. where She worked for the Naval Supply Center until retiring. She was a housemother at Salem Academy in Winston Salem, N.C. for a number of years before finally retiring and returning to Lancaster, S.C. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, S.C.
Survivors include her brother, Paul M. Horton, Sr., brother-in-law, Kenneth M. Calder both residents of the Presbyterian Home, Summerville, S.C., three nephews, P. Mac Horton, Jr. of Columbia, S.C., William L.B. Horton and M. Dan Horton both of Charleston. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marian H. Calder, and a brother, Herbert A. Horton, Jr. Interment will be held later in Westside Cemetery, Lancaster, S.C. James Atwood McCain Jr.
PAGELAND — James Atwood McCain Jr., 55, died April 4, 2008 at McDowell Hospital in Marion, N.C. He was the son of the late James and Florie Shropshire McCain, Sr. He joined the First Kershaw Baptist Church at an early age, serving faithfully and in 2003 joined the Rosehill Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a faithful member. He was a member of the trustee ministries, very attentive in Sunday school. He loved reading the Bible and studying his Sunday school literature. He was preceded in death by a brother, Warrdell T. McCain, and a sister, Hattie E. McCain. Survivors include his wife, Dallas B. McCain; two sons, Darrel Dehon McCain and Timothy McCain both of Cassett, S.C.; four daughters, Shantenna Jett of Cassett, S.C., Lakesia McCain of Fort Mill, S.C., Yolana McCain and Erika McCain both of the home; four brothers, Willie F. (Annie Lou) McCain, Hazel L. (Anita) McCain both of Kershaw, S.C., William B. (Mary) McCain of Heath Springs, S.C. and Gary T. McCain of McCormick, S.C.; two sisters, Brenda (Curtis) Collins and Mary L. Clark both of both of Kershaw; a special uncle, George (Willene) Shropshire; three aunts, May Fredia Shropshire, Mable Shropshire and Dorothy Truesdale all of Kershaw; grandchildren, Daisean McCain, Darius Myers, Marquez McCain, and Isis McCain; a mother-in-law, Mavis T. Blakeney; sisters-in-law, Delores Baker, Nettie Threatt, and Maggie Funderburk all of Pageland; brothers-in-law, James Blakeney, Randolph Blakeney both of Lancaster; Lannie Blakeney and George Blakeney both of Pageland; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Terry Fields McLain
JEFFERSON — Terry Fields McLain, 59, died April 10, 2008. A funeral service will be held at a later date.
McClain, born in Orangeburg, S.C. a daughter of the late Ergenia Robinson Gleaton and John Andrew and Melba Hightower Fields. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are: husband, Glen Earle McClain of the home; sons, Timmy E. McClain and Jimmy F. (Zedra Clanton) Catoe of Jefferson, and Jay (Linda) Fields of Florence, S.C.; daughter, Kathy (Joey) Belk of Jefferson; brothers, twin brother Kerry Wayne Robinson of Windsor, S.C., Bobby Robinson of Orangeburg, S.C., Glenn Gleaton of Cordova, S.C., David Gleaton and Jack Gleaton of Orangeburg, S.C.; sisters, Linda Martin and Savon Bowick of Orangeburg, S.C.; also 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Eugene H. Melton
HARTSVILLE - Eugene H. Melton, 95, died April 14, 2008. Funeral services were held April 16 at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home. Dr. Gary Colboch will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
Melton was born in Chesterfield Co., a son of the late Eli Hampton and Emma Hendrix Melton. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Living Hope SS Class, and had retired from Kendall Mills.
Surviving are his wife: Florence Melton; sons: Dennis (Fran) Melton, Danny (Judy) Melton; daughter-in-law: Brenda Melton, all of Hartsville; 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Melton and a son, Eugene F. Azilee Carter Poston
KERSHAW—Azilee Carter Poston, 76, died April 14, 2008 at her home. Funeral services were held April 16 at Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Ella Cook Carter. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Vicky (David) West of Pageland and Patricia (Edward) Plyler of Monroe, N.C.; a son, Ricky (Margaret) Poston of Kershaw; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a sister, Annie Mae Sistare of Lancaster. Melba Wilkerson Shepherd
PATRICK - Melba Wilkerson Shepherd, 61, died April 15, 2008. Services were held April 17 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Internment followed at Bay Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
Shepherd was born in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Arthur and Naomi Gooden Wilkerson. She was a retired store manager having worked with Shoe Show and Barbee’s Jewelry. Melba was a member of Bay Springs Baptist Church and attended Refuge Baptist Church. She was a loving Wife, Mama, and Nana.
Survivors include Husband: Freddie Shepherd of the home; son Russ (Lynn) Shepherd of Patrick; daughter: Renee (Michael) Valdaliso of Patrick; brothers: William (Vernie) Wilkerson and Bobby (Sue) Wilkerson of Cheraw, and Thomas Wilkerson of Patrick; grandchildren Logan Shepherd and Kyle Valdaliso.
