CHESTERFIELD — Helen McKenzie Burr, 81, died March 13, 2008. A funeral service was held March 15, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Burr was born in Bennettsville, S.C., a daughter of the late Oliver Cleveland and Florence Parker McKenzie. She was a graduate of Robert Fletcher Memorial High School and was a retired seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband James Murray Burr and a grandson James William Eddins.
Surviving are: daughter, Mary Alice Burr of Clio, S.C.; grandchildren, Teresa (Richard) Preston of Clio, S.C. and Danny (Deanna) Eddins of Chesterfield, S.C.; brother, Douglas (Lena) McKenzie of Bennettsville, S.C.
one sister, Eva M. (A.T.) Langley of New Bern, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Danna and Brandon Eddins, and Bradley Graham.

JEFFERSON—Ben Carson Graves, 77, died Sun., Mar. 16, 2008. A funeral service was held Mar. 19 at Sutton Funeral Home Chapel with interment following at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
He was born May 16, 1930 in Pageland, S.C. to Ben and Lillie Atkinson. He was retired from the DuPont Company in Camden, S.C. He passed away at the Home Place Assisted Living in Eastman, Ga. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Graves (Oliver) of Jefferson; son, Ben Ronnie Graves of Milan, Ga.; sisters, Clarice Hood of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mary Hathaway of Pageland, S.C.; grandchildren, Meredith Pitts (Christian), Leah Mitchell (Jeff), Elizabeth Graves; great grandson, Jackson W. Pitts.

Bobbie Jean Lewis Johnson
CHESTERFIELD - Bobbie Jean Lewis Johnson, 72, died March 18, 2008 at her home. a funeral service was held March 20, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Johnson, born in Chesterfield a daughter of the late James Isaac and Pansy Aline Davidson Lewis. She was a retired inspector with Highland Industries with 42 years of service. Johnson was a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church. She was married for 45 years to the late Fletcher J. Johnson, Jr. and was also preceded in death by son, Dr. Jimmy Johnson, brothers, Wilson, Tommy, William, and Bonnie Lewis, and by sisters, Mary Lee Gulledge and Martha Stafford.
Surviving are: son, Charles (Hannah) Johnson of Chesterfield; daughter, Cynthia (Johnny) Davidson of Chesterfield; sister, Allie Mae Stafford of Chesterfield; grandchildren, Chad (Kristy) Davidson, Lauren (James) Griggs, Kyle (Tiffany) Davidson, Ryan Johnson and Anna Johnson; great-grandchildren: Emma Grace Davidson and Jayden Davidson.

Lear was born in Greenville, S.C. a daughter of the late Minnie Turner. She was a retired textile employee. Lou was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.

Wilton B. ‘Mack’ Mackall
FLORIDA - Wilton B. “Mack” Mackall, 88, died March 15, 2008. A grave-side service was held March 21, at Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Mackall was born in Crafton, PA. He attended schools in Pittsburgh, PA. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II from 1942 to 1945; later, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Mackall started working for the State of Fla. Veterans Affairs in 1946, and rose to serve in 2 Governors’ Cabinets as Fla. State Director of Veterans Affairs. After retiring from State government, he thereafter served as Special Assistant to the Director of the VA Medical Center-Bay Pines, Fla.. Mackall was a 60-year member of the VFW, and a Life Member of both the American Legion and also the Disabled American Veterans. He was Past President of the National Veterans Service Officers’ Association of America.
Surviving are: wife of 48 years, Julia Davis Mackall of the home; sister-in-law; brothers-in-law; and by nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Coble Russell
POLKTON, N.C.—Dorothy Coble Russell, 95, died Mar. 16, 2008 at the Brian Center in Monroe. A funeral service was held Mar. 18 at the Chapel of Morgan and Son Funeral Home with burial following in the Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Russell, born in Randolph County a daughter of the late John and Vandelia Coble. She was widowed by her husband Edgar Earl Russell. Russell delighted in caring and cooking for her family and friends. The grandchildren have wonderful memories of her fried potatoes, fried apple pies, and hot butter and sugar biscuits. She enjoyed quilting with her twin sister Arve for many years. She and her late husband shared the bounty of their vegetable garden, which they enjoyed with their friends and family.

PAGELAND - Brenda Abernathy Autry, 65, died March 9, 2008. A funeral service was held March 12, 2008 at Rose Memorial Church of the Nazarene with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Autry born in China Grove, NC a daughter of Margaret Abernathy Suggs and the late Olin Gordon. Brenda was raised by her grandparents Fred and Annie Abernathy. She was a homemaker.

CHERAW - Howard W. Boan Sr., 86, died March 13, 2008. A funeral service was held March 16, 2008 at Westside Baptist Church with burial in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Boan born in Cheraw, SC a son of the late Ira Walker Boan, Sr. and Mattie Lou Board Boan. He was a graduate of Cheraw High School and a retired sales manager with American Bakeries. Boan was a lifelong, faithful, member of Westside Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and member of the American Legion Post 74.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Sarah Phillips Boan, his brothers, Ira W. Boan, Jr. and Paul J. Boan, and by a sister, Edell Boan Polson.
Surviving are: son, H. Walker (Mary) Boan of Inman, SC; daughter, Diane (James B.)Boan-Donaldson of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Beth (Jimmy) Boan O’Neal of Cheraw, James Walker Donaldson of Chapel Hill, NC; great- grandchildren: Richard, Alex, and Jacob Evans of Cheraw; sister, Mary Lou Boan (Bill) Jacobs of Cheraw; sisters-in-law: Dorothy P. Atwater Huntley
PAGELAND—Atwater Huntley, 76, died March 3, 2008. Funeral services were held March 8 at King’s Funeral Home Chapel in Pageland. He was the son of James and Ola Huntley. He was known as “Ug” to family and friends. Juanita mistook “Ug” for Earl, but learning of the mistake she continued to prefer Earl as her term of endearment. To this day, he is known by “Earl” to his Easterling family. Atwater spent most of his life in Pageland as a farmer. He did however serve his country in the Korean War. In later years, he was employed by Pageland Screen Printers from where he retired. Though farming continued to be his passion, he prided himself in some of the juiciest sweetest watermelons around. If you knew Atwater, you knew that he loved to talk and talk and talk… It was not uncommon to say multiple goodbyes before parting ways. His kind heart, insightful ways, keen wit, and old sayings will be missed by all. If he loved you, you knew it; if he could help you, he would.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lillian Johnson, and his brothers Ivory, Hattye, and Walter Huntley. Surviving are: wife, Juanita Easterling Huntley; his children, Angela Lucas (Owen), Gregory Huntley, Veronica PoPo (Felix), and Gerald Huntley; his sister, Muriel Johnson; his brothers, Dillon Huntley, James Huntley (Johnsie), and Douglas Huntley; four grandchildren, Marquese and Trenikia Mitchell and DeAnna and Owen “Trey” Lucas, III; two great-grandchildren; a special niece, Sherby Blakeney; two special sisters-in-law, Jessie Conrad and Catherine Huntley; brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

King born in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Henry Frank and Mary Etta “Mollie” Knight King. She was a graduate of Roper Hospital School of Nursing in Charleston, SC, and received her certification in Public Health Nursing from Georgia Peabody College. She also completed additional courses at the University of North Carolina and at Furman University. Bea retired in 1974 from Greenville County Health Department as coordinating nurse in Home Health Services after 24 years of service.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Foster King, sisters, Lela K. Carr and Vivian K. Adams, and by a dear friend Peggy Davis.
Surviving are: brother Frank King of Salisbury, NC; sisters, Sue Lee Harmon of Chesterfield, SC, Julia (Bill) Hunter of Charlotte, NC, Helen (Dr. Jerry) Perry, and Johnnie Long of Chesterfield, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.

HARTSVILLE - The Rev. Vernon Lewis, 63, died March 9, 2008. A funeral service was held March 12, 2008 at Pine View Baptist Church, Chesterfield, with burial in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Hartsville.
Rev. Lewis born in Hartsville, a son of the late Maxie Brooks and Ruth Isgett Lewis. He was a graduate of Galilee Bible Institution with a degree in Theology, and was a Baptist Minister and Building Contractor. Rev. Lewis was former pastor of Pine View Baptist Church and New Hope Baptist Church, and served as interim pastor of Brown Springs, Mt. Olivet, and Piney Plains Baptist Churches. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.
Rev. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, James “Pete” Lewis, and Jerry “John” Lewis and by his sister, Valerie “Ann” Dixon.
Surviving are: wife Shirley Lambert Lewis of the home; son, Lawrence V. “Larry” Lewis, Jr. of Hartsville, and his fiancé Kimberly Dawn Smith; daughter, Shirley Elaine (Steve) Riley of Hartsville; son-in-law, Pete Starling of Patrick; brother, Rev. Maloch born in Darlington County, SC a daughter of the late James Wilcox Hill and Louise Jackson Hill. She was a retired Library Assistant with the Chesterfield County Library and a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Lib was married to the late John B. “Jake” Maloch and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Maloch and by her three brothers, Jack, Edward, and Son Hill.

Lloyd Merriman
CHERAW – Lloyd Merriman, 85, died March 6, 2008. A funeral service was held March 11, 2008 at Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church where he was a member.
Merriman, born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Leon and Leanna Streater Merriman. He was a multi-talented individual who was self taught and multi-disciplined at many trades. This led him to be dedicated employee of Calvin Rivers Farms and self employed as an auto mechanic. As a very respected and sociable man, he had an extensive circle of friends. He was a principled and outspoken individual and he embodied a very vibrant classy spirit. No one who ever met him could forget him.
He was preceded in death by wife, Ada Mae Nivens Merriman and siblings, Floyd Merriman, Willies Merriman, Burlin Merriman, Donetta Leak and Mary Pegues.
Surviving are: sons, Jerome (Dorothy) Merriman of Morven, NC, Tyrone (Gladys) Merriman of Cheraw, and Timothy (Sharon) Merriman of High Point; daughters, Mary C. McCoy of Chesterfield, Alice L. Rosa Woodward Wise
RUBY - Rosa Woodward Wise, 90, died March 12, 2008. A funeral service was held March 15, 2008 at Fairview Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Wise, born in Ruby, a daughter of the late Joseph Hebron Woodward and Mary Elizabeth Steen Woodward. She moved to Kannapolis, NC as a young girl and after the start of WWII, she and her lifelong friend ‘Merle” Overcash went to Bridgeport, Conn., where they became original “Rosie the Rivioters” by working in a shipyard. She eventually returned to the Carolinas where she married Mr. Roscoe Wise. Before returning to Ruby, they settled in Kannapolis, NC for a short time where they both worked in the cotton mills. After relocating back to Ruby, SC Mrs. Rosa eventually became a homemaker and caretaker for the elderly and sick. She did this for many years. Rosa was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Grace W. Williams and Sarah W. Baker.
Surviving are: daughter, Paula Lynn Wise of Ruby; stepson, Charles Lynn Wise of Lexington, NC; brother, Eugene “Gene” (Lona Mae) Woodward of Ruby, sisters, Cora Bell Grass of Kannapolis, NC and Beatrice Oliver of Ruby;

HARTSVILLE - The Rev. Vernon Lewis, 63, died March 9, 2008. A funeral service was held March 12, 2008 at Pine View Baptist Church, Chesterfield, with burial in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Hartsville.
Rev. Lewis born in Hartsville, a son of the late Maxie Brooks and Ruth Isgett Lewis. He was a graduate of Galilee Bible Institution with a degree in Theology, and was a Baptist Minister and Building Contractor. Rev. Lewis was former pastor of Pine View Baptist Church and New Hope Baptist Church, and served as interim pastor of Brown Springs, Mt. Olivet, and Piney Plains Baptist Churches. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.
Rev. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, James “Pete” Lewis, and Jerry “John” Lewis and by his sister, Valerie “Ann” Dixon.
Surviving are: wife Shirley Lambert Lewis of the home; son, Lawrence V. “Larry” Lewis, Jr. of Hartsville, and his fiancé Kimberly Dawn Smith; daughter, Shirley Elaine (Steve) Riley of Hartsville; son-in-law, Pete Starling of Patrick; brother, Rev. William (Cheryl) Lewis of Hartsville; five grandchildren Trey, Emily, and Brooke Starling, and Justin & Blake Riley.

Maloch born in Darlington County, SC a daughter of the late James Wilcox Hill and Louise Jackson Hill. She was a retired Library Assistant with the Chesterfield County Library and a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Lib was married to the late John B. “Jake” Maloch and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Maloch and by her three brothers, Jack, Edward, and Son Hill.

CHERAW – Lloyd Merriman, 85, died March 6, 2008. A funeral service was held March 11, 2008 at Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church where he was a member.
Merriman, born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Leon and Leanna Streater Merriman. He was a multi-talented individual who was self taught and multi-disciplined at many trades. This led him to be dedicated employee of Calvin Rivers Farms and self employed as an auto mechanic. As a very respected and sociable man, he had an extensive circle of friends. He was a principled and outspoken individual and he embodied a very vibrant classy spirit. No one who ever met him could forget him.
He was preceded in death by wife, Ada Mae Nivens Merriman and siblings, Floyd Merriman, Willies Merriman, Burlin Merriman, Donetta Leak and Mary Pegues.
Surviving are: sons, Jerome (Dorothy) Merriman of Morven, NC, Tyrone (Gladys) Merriman of Cheraw, and Timothy (Sharon) Merriman of High Point; daughters, Mary C. McCoy of Chesterfield, Alice L. Rosa Woodward Wise
RUBY - Rosa Woodward Wise, 90, died March 12, 2008. A funeral service was held March 15, 2008 at Fairview Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Wise, born in Ruby, a daughter of the late Joseph Hebron Woodward and Mary Elizabeth Steen Woodward. She moved to Kannapolis, NC as a young girl and after the start of WWII, she and her lifelong friend ‘Merle” Overcash went to Bridgeport, Conn., where they became original “Rosie the Rivioters” by working in a shipyard. She eventually returned to the Carolinas where she married Mr. Roscoe Wise. Before returning to Ruby, they settled in Kannapolis, NC for a short time where they both worked in the cotton mills. After relocating back to Ruby, SC Mrs. Rosa eventually became a homemaker and caretaker for the elderly and sick. She did this for many years. Rosa was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Grace W. Williams and Sarah W. Baker.
Surviving are: daughter, Paula Lynn Wise of Ruby; stepson, Charles Lynn Wise of Lexington, NC; brother, Eugene “Gene” (Lona Mae) Woodward of Ruby, sisters, Cora Bell Grass of Kannapolis, NC and Beatrice Oliver of Ruby;

CHESTERFIELD - Robert Darree Davis, 71, died, Feb. 26, 2008, at his home.
A funeral service was held Feb. 29, 2008 at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church with burial in the Church Cemetery.
Davis born, in Morven, NC, a son of the late Ruben Nathan and Effie Jane White Davis. He was a former department manager with 38 years of service at Chesterfield Webbing and was a retired employee of Delta Mills with 10 years of service. Davis was a member of the WOW Lodge 516 and a member of the Sandy Plains United Methodist Church.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, Lonnie, Roy, Tyler, C.E., Francis, and Charles Davis and by sisters, Margaret D. Goodale, Madge D. Rogers, and Naomi D. Westberry.
Surviving are: wife of 50 years, Mildred Lee Davis of the home; son, Richard D. “Ricky” Davis; daughters, Teresa D. (Larry) Smith and Tammy D. Elgego Lockhart King
JEFFERSON—Elgego Lockhart King, 95, died Feb. 14, 2008. Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at Hopewell Baptist Church in McBee, S.C. She was born December 27, 1912 as the daughter of the late Jim and Minnie Blakeney Lockhart in Chesterfield County, S.C. At an early age, she dedicated her life to God and became an active member at Oro United Methodist Church in Pageland. On March 1, 1929 she was united in marriage to the late Bill King and to this union two children were born. In 1980 King moved to Washington, DC to live with her daughter. While living in Washington, DC, she joined Springfield Baptist Church. She was also very active at the Modern City Dwelling Center and went everyday until she became very ill. King was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Community Chapter #205 in McBee, S.C. and joined the Queen of Sheba Chapter #2 while living in the District of Columbia. Surviving her are a daughter, Mary Frances Blakeney of Washington, D.C.; a son, Billy King of Mitchellville, M.D.; an adopted daughter, Peggy Alsbrook of Monroe, N.C.; a granddaughter, Zelda of Bowie, M.D.; a grandson, Ricky of Washington, D.C.; a granddaughter-in-law, Yvette of Fayetteville, N.C.; a great granddaughter, Kristyn and a great grandson, Graham both of Fayetteville, N.C.; three sisters, Vera Sowell of Philadelphia, P.A., Margaret McGrady and Louise Smothers both of Newark, NJ; one sister-in-law, Sally Brewer of Florence, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was born April 9, 1931 in Pageland, a daughter of the late Clayton Clark and the late Lula Marze Clark. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis Krimminger, one brother, William Roy Clark, and one sister, Mary Lou Rivers. She attended Pageland High School and lived most of her life in Charlotte, Pageland, and Wingate. Barrington was born Feb. 14, 1934 in Bennettsville, S.C. a daughter of the late Willie Lester and Flossie Steen Brigman. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Community Baptist Church. Dessie was married to the late Nelson Eugene Barrington.
She was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Mary Parker, and Regina Wallace, and 1 brother, Fred Ray Brigman.
Surviving are: son, Nelson (Vonda) Barrington of Society Hill, S.C.; daughter, Dorothy B. (Richard) Huff of Society Hill, S.C.; four grandchildren, Nick Barrington, Chris Huff, Willie Wallace, and Wendy Wallace; 1half brother, Lester Brigman of McColl, S.C.; two sisters, Evelina Stubbs of Gibson, N.C., and Pearl Griggs of Wallace, S.C.

ROCK HILL - Mary Kathryn Blakeney, 94, died Feb. 19, 2008. A funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 23 at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel with burial at White Plains Cemetery in Jefferson, S.C.
Blakeney, born September 29, 1913 near Pageland, S.C., to the late Jim and Fannie Pigg Hicks. Kathryn and the late J. T. Blakeney, Jr. were married in May of 1936 and made their home near Lancaster, S.C. They later moved to Rock Hill where they remained except for a period of time during World War II when they lived in Baltimore, Maryland to work in defense plants producing planes. Kathryn was an accomplished seamstress and quilt maker. Over the years, many of her friends and family have enjoyed wedding dresses and quilts she made for them. Kathryn was also very involved in her church and eager to see it grow.
Kathryn was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Brown of Kingstree, S.C.
Surviving are two sisters, Irene Haselden of Andrews, S.C. and Billie Funderburk of Pageland, S.C.; a brother, James C. Hicks and wife, Marjorie of Blacksburg, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews and their families. One niece, Ellen Greene and her husband, Jerry reside in Rock Hill, S.C.

ANGELUS—Sandra Shannon Crowder, 57, died Feb. 8, 2008 at Carolina Medical Center-Union. A funeral service was held Feb. 13 at Angelus Chapel A.M.E Zion Church.
She was the daughter of the late Harvey Shannon and Flora Blakeney Shannon. Crowder was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Crowder; son, Stevenson Crowder; two brothers, Ned Miller and Harvey Shannon Jr.; and brother-in-law, Lester Gaddy.
Surviving are: children, Inell Crowder of Charlotte, N.C., and Steve Crowder of Monroe, N.C.; five grandchildren, Steven, Kahlil, Christopher, Jamerous, and Desmond; sisters, Ann (Jack) Sutton of Jefferson, and Susanne (Rev. Lola Louise Hubbard
MT. CROGHAN — Lola Louise Hubbard, 88, died Jan. 17, 2008.
Born in Chesterfield County, she was the daughter of the late Verge and Eva Baker. She was the second of 15 children. At an early , she dedicated her life to God and became an active member at Black Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Croghan.
During the great immigration north, she moved to New York with her husband Mack N. Hubbard to build a better life for her family. There she developed and pursued a lifetime career as a skilled seamstress. Her Christian growth continued as she united with St. Marks Baptist Church and Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, respectively, both in Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon retiring, she and her husband enjoyed traveling, which often included trips across the country and cruises to the Caribbean. Eventually, she and her husband returned to her first church home at Black Creek Baptist Church and were welcomed with open arms.
Throughout her Christian life, she served faithfully as a deaconess, a missionary, a Sunday school teacher, and in other ministries where needed.
Her husband, Deacon Mack Hubbard, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children Mary Jones, of Massapequa, N.Y., Benjamin Hubbard (Jesse), of Mt. Croghan, S.C., Joseph Hubbard (Jeannie), of Buena Park, Calif., Willie Hubbard (Patricia), of Indian Trail, N.C., Thomas Hubbard (Janie), of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., Anne Thomas (David), of Chicago, Ill.
She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, four sisters, and a host of relatives and friends.

Little, born in Chesterfield County, was the daughter of the late Bennie and Blanche Rollins Cash. She was converted at an early and joined New Zion Baptist Church. She was married to the late Henry Lee Little.
She was preceded in death by, daughter, Doris Liles, sister Ruby Lee Cash, and brothers, Bennie Cash, Jr and Floyd Cash.

FORT MILL - Graham Wallace Moore, 71, died Feb. 19, 2008, at his daughter’s home.
The funeral service was held Feb. 22 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel with burial at Forest Hills Cemetery.
A native of Pageland, S.C., Moore was a son of the late Eugene J. Moore and the late Lela Wallace Moore. He retired from working for the state of S.C., was a Masonic member, and of the Baptist faith.

Thelma Allsbrook Brewer Murphy
PAGELAND—Thelma Allsbrook Brewer Murphy died Feb. 12, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 16 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was the daughter of the late Eleanor Allsbrook and Joseph and Emma Covington Brewer. She was a graduate of Butler High School in Hartsville, S.C. Upon graduating, she moved to New York. She married the late Scott M. Murphy, Sr. on Feb. 1, 1947 and they had a son, Scott M. Murphy, Jr. who preceded her in death. Thelma and Scott were the proprietors of Murphy’s Dry Cleaning in Bronx, New York. She served in many capacities at the cleaners including seamstress. Her career also included working for the late Dr. Roosevelt Gathings and providing clerical services at a law firm. Thelma was reared in a Christian home and as a child attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Pageland. She joined Mount Vernon Heights Congregational Church while living in Mount Vernon, New York. Upon returning to Pageland, she resumed her membership at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and served in numerous capacities.
Surviving are a grandson, Shawn (Shnetha) Fisher; two grandchildren, Taniya Fisher and Niko Fisher all of Jonesboro, Ga.; a special nephew, Gerald (Susie) Watson of Charlotte, N.C.; a devoted cousin, Dorothy Moore of Pageland; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

JEFFERSON — Ray Harvey Oliver, 66, died Feb. 21, 2008 at his home. A funeral service was held Feb. 23 at Almetta Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Oliver was born June 8, 1941 in Pageland, S.C. a son of the late Reverend Arthur Ganson and Desnie Autrey Oliver. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School. Ray was a former employee of Springs Industries with 28 years of service and was a retired EMT – Intermediate with Chesterfield County Ambulance Service with 26 years of service. He was also a member for 26 years with the Jefferson Rescue Squad. Oliver was a former member and deacon of Almetta Baptist Church for many years, and was now a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Pageland, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gayle Ann Maree Oliver and by his brother, Rev. Kenneth Oliver.

PATRICK - Maxie Gardner Turnage, Jr., 64, died Feb. 18, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 21, at the Turnage Home with burial in the Polson Family Cemetery.
Turnage, born July 18, 1943, in Patrick, S.C., son of Martha Polson Moore and the late Maxie Gardner Turnage.
He was a retired auto mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Tyrone Johnson.

Veda Freeman Watson
KINSTON, N.C — Veda Freeman Watson died Feb. 19, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 23 at Howard-Carter Funeral Home in Kinston, N.C., with burial at Westview Cemetery, Kinston, N.C.
Veda was born and raised in Chesterfield, SC, the daughter of the late Mildred Douglass Freeman and James Monroe Freeman of Chesterfield. In 1948, she married Thomas Junius Watson and moved to Kinston, N.C. in 1954. She worked as a supervisor at Caswell Center, where she retired in 1989. Veda was a member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church where she was an active member and sang in the choir for many years. She loved her family and friends, and one of her greatest joys was to spend time with and cook for them. She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries throughout the world. Five years ago, due to declining health, she moved to Raleigh to be closer to her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. “June Bug” Watson.

PATRICK - Maxie Gardner Turnage, Jr., 64, died Feb. 18, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 21, at the Turnage Home with burial in the Polson Family Cemetery.

Veda Freeman Watson
KINSTON, N.C — Veda Freeman Watson died Feb. 19, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 23 at Howard-Carter Funeral Home in Kinston, N.C., with burial at Westview Cemetery, Kinston, N.C.
Veda was born and raised in Chesterfield, SC, the daughter of the late Mildred Douglass Freeman and James Monroe Freeman of Chesterfield. In 1948, she married Thomas Junius Watson and moved to Kinston, N.C. in 1954. She worked as a supervisor at Caswell Center, where she retired in 1989. Veda was a member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church where she was an active member and sang in the choir for many years. She loved her family and friends, and one of her greatest joys was to spend time with and cook for them. She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries throughout the world. Five years ago, due to declining health, she moved to Raleigh to be closer to her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. “June Bug” Watson.
Surviving are : daughters, Linda Watson (Tom) Hicks and of Amarillo, TX, and Susan Watson Liverman and Gene Liverman of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Mazie Freeman Hales and Mary Sue Freeman of Pensacola Beach, FL and Sarah Ann Freeman Simms of Sumter, SC; grandson Brian Thomas Hicks and granddaughter Kelly Yvonne Hicks, both of Amarillo, TX; great-grandchildren Ryan Thomas Hicks and Chase Anderson Hicks of Amarillo, TX.

She was born Dec. 1, 1932 in Wadesboro, N.C., a daughter of Ruth Mills James and the late Jim Bo James. She was a retired Floral Designer. Bonnie was married to the late G.A. Davis, Jr., and was also preceded in death by her brother, Bobby James.

KERSHAW—Gladys L. Robinson Evans died Feb. 5, 2008 at Palmetto Richland in Columbia, S.C.
She was born in Lancaster, the daughter of the late Johnny and Alice McGriff Robinson. She married John Aaron Evans in April of 1938 and enjoyed fifty-two years of marriage until his death in 1990. Together they had twelve children. She received her forma education from the Lancaster County public school system. Because of her religious training she joined the Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church, Kershaw, S.C. where she was baptized at an early age. Her service to the church includes Sunday school teacher for the primary class, an usher with the usher’s ministry, member of the junior and senior missionary ministry, advisor for the young adult choir and deaconess with the deaconess ministry. She was a blessing to all who knew her. Not only was she attentive in her church, she also gave unselfishly of her talents, time, energy and resources to her family, friends and community during the course of her life. She was very passionate about her work with Flat Creek School and Andrew Jackson High School PTA. Being the great cook that she was, she was often asked to prepare food for special events held at the schools.
Surviving are her seven daughters, Barbara A. Evans, of Pittsburg, PA, Patricia A. Champion (David), Charlene Evans, Michelle Evans all of Bronx, N.Y., Johnnie L. Benson (George) of Paradise, A.Z., Mildred Wright (Curtis) of Jefferson, and Linda Funderburk (Ricky) of Lancaster; three sons, Robert Paul Evans (Lavilla) of Jefferson, Jackie R. Evans (Myrna) of Honolulu, H.I. and Wayne Evans of Charlotte, N.C.; eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Mungo Robinson of Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Lola Louise Hubbard
MT. CROGHAN — Lola Louise Hubbard, 88, died Jan. 17, 2008.
Born in Chesterfield County, she was the daughter of the late Verge and Eva Baker. She was the second of 15 children. At an early age, she dedicated her life to God and became an active member at Black Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Croghan. During the great immigration north, she moved to New York with her husband Mack N. Hubbard to build a better life for her family. There she developed and pursued a lifetime career as a skilled seamstress. Her Christian growth continued as she united with St. Marks Baptist Church and Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, respectively, both in Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon retiring, she and her husband enjoyed traveling, which often included trips across the country and cruises to the Caribbean. Eventually, she and her husband returned to her first church home at Black Creek Baptist Church and were welcomed with open arms. Throughout her Christian life, she served faithfully as a deaconess, a missionary, a Sunday school teacher, and in other ministries where needed.
Her husband, Deacon Mack Hubbard, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children Mary Jones, of Massapequa, N.Y., Benjamin Hubbard (Jesse), of Mt. Croghan, S.C., Joseph Hubbard (Jeannie), of Buena Park, Calif., Willie Hubbard (Patricia), of Indian Trail, N.C., Thomas Hubbard (Janie), of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., Anne Thomas (David), of Chicago, Ill.
She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, four sisters, and a host of relatives and friends.

CHESTERFIELD — Clarence Smith Jr., 69, died Feb. 3, 2008. Funeral services were held Feb. 8 at Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church.
He was the son of the late Clarence Smith, Sr. and the late Mary Sinclair Smith was born on January 12, 1939, in Lancaster County. He departed this life on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at Chesterfield General Hospital in Cheraw. Clarence was educated in the Chesterfield County public schools. At an early age he joined Mt. Harmon Baptist Church of Pageland. In later years he joined New Zion Baptist Church of Chesterfield where he remained a member until his death. On Sept. 15, 1974 he married Lessie Marie Little Smith.
He was preceded in death by three children.

Dr. Harold Dean Belk
CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Dr. Harold Dean Belk, 73, died Feb. 3, 2008. Funeral services were held at White Plains Baptist Church. He was born January 10, 1935 to the late William Claude and Ora Hicks Belk of Pageland. Dr. Belk graduated with honors from Duke University and the Medical University of SC. He completed his residency in Occupational Medicine from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He was former Medical Director for Western Electric, Lexington Road in Winston-Salem, N.C., Alcoa in Pittsburgh, Penn., and staff physician for Carolinas Medical Systems’ urgent care clinics in Marshville, Concord, and Monroe, N.C. Immediately preceding his death, he was employed as Medical Review Officer for National Diagnostics, Inc. in Charlotte. He was past president of the Occupational Medical Association. He is survived by his wife, Linda Charles Belk, and daughter Robin Belk Amick, both of Charlotte, sister Lila Belk Sims and husband Charles Eldred Sims, and one nephew, Barrett Charles Sims, all of Rock Hill, S.C. Myers and Alma Rushing Myers. She attended the Chesterfield county public school system. She resided in Brooklyn, N.Y. for over fifty years prior to returning to Pageland. KERSHAW—Roy Evans, 59, died Jan. 24, 2008. He was born Feb. 18, 1948, the sixth child of the late John Aaron and Gladys Robinson Evans. He received his education in the public schools of Lancaster County and graduated in 1967 from Hill Side High School in Heath Springs, S.C. His working career began at Caro-Knit in Jefferson, where he worked in the shipping department. Seeking new challenges, Roy was employed with Springs Industries and worked at Grace Bleachery for thirty years before leaving to care for his mother. A lifelong member of Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church, he was an active parishioner and faithfully attended the church until illness of his mother compeled him to curtail his activities. His service to the church includes Sunday school teacher for the youth, an usher with the Usher’s Ministry, a trustee, and a member of the Deacon’s Ministry. Mr. Evans is survived by his mother, Gladys Robinson Evans; seven sisters, Barbara A. Evans of Pittsburg, Penn., Patricia A. (David) Champion, Charlene Evans, Michelle Evans all of Bronx, N.Y., Johnny L. (George) Benson of Paradise, A.Z., Mildred (Curtis) Wright of Jefferson, S.C., and Linda (Ricky) Funderburk of Lancaster, S.C.; three brothers, Robert (Lavilla) Evans of Jefferson, Jackie (Myrna) Evans of Honolulu, H.I., and Wayne Evans of Charlotte, N.C.; a god-daughter, Chericka M. Funderburk and was a homemaker most of her life. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church and was a WWI widow. Surviving Mrs. Funderburk are three sons, John (Rachel) Funderburk, Austin (Mary Ann) Funderburk, both of Pageland, and Kermit (Shelby) Funderburk, of Lancaster; four daughters, Joan Rowe, of Wellford, S.C., Dale (Jerry) Baxter, of Duncan, S.C., Rita Lancaster, of Luray, Va., and Brenda Bishop, of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Gertrude Funderburk, of Pafftown, N.C. Mrs. Jordan was born in Morven, N.C., a daughter of the late John Rufus and Sarah Purvis Lang. She was a homemaker and a member of Rose Memorial Church of the Nazarene. Ruth was married to the late Bill Jordan and was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jackie Hurst, Jr. Surviving are two sons, Rev. Billy R. Betty Attaway Mason Moore
Betty Attaway Mason Moore, 74, died Jan. 26, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 1, 2008 at Zion Hill Pentecostal Church in Clinton, SC. She was born as the third of fifteen children to the late Robert and Mariah Fuller Attaway. She was educated in Laurens County public schools and at an early age married Tommie Lee Mason, bearing nine children, three of which preceded her in death as infants. She relocated to Washington, DC where she joined Temple of Truth Baptist Church. The Lord led her to Harmony Baptist Church then to Mount Calvary Freewill Baptist Church where she was saved. Acknowledging her calling into the ministry in 1974, she preached her initial sermon and was licensed as a minister on the second Sunday in December of 1974. After studying for a year under her pastor, she was ordained as an Evangelist. She joined United Church of God in Christ in Washington, DC where she was President of the Youth Department, the Usher Board, and the Sunday School Department. God was still working with her and led her back to South Carolina after being away for thirty-nine years. Upon her return, she married the late Leroy Moore of Pageland. At Mount Zion Progressive Church of Jesus, Elder Moore served under the leadership of Bishop Robert L. Attaway for 15 years. While there, she served as the President of the Usher Board and of the Women’s Day Committee. When her husband died in 1992, she relocated to Laurens, S.C. She then left Mouth Zion to help Pastor Charles Smith at Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church. Having a vision from God, Pastor Smith appointed her as Assistant Pastor after she served under him awhile, where she remained a faithful member until her death. She taught Sunday school for the children and was an original member of the Faith Tabernacle Gospel Choir. She was preceded in death by sister, Gena Mae Jones, brother, John Arthur Attaway, husband, Leroy Moore and three grandchildren. Surviving are three sons, Thommie Charles Mason of Anderson, S.C., Robert Gene Mason of Suitland, M.D., and Michael Gerald Mason of Washington, DC; three daughters, Alice (Robert) Williams of Upper Marlboro, M.D., Cynthia (Gregory) Wormley of Upper Marlboro, M.D., and Michelle (Larry) Holmes of Laruens, S.C.; inherited by marriage: two sons, Jimmy Moore of Washington, D.C. and Mitchell Moore of Jessup, M.D.; three daughters, Edith Phillips and Saundra Ware of Washington, DC, and Betty (Leonard) Blakely of Fayetteville, N.C. CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Dr. Harold Dean Belk, 73, died Feb. 3, 2008. Funeral services were held at White Plains Baptist Church. He was born January 10, 1935 to the late William Claude and Ora Hicks Belk of Pageland. Dr. Belk graduated with honors from Duke University and the Medical University of SC. He completed his residency in Occupational Medicine from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He was former Medical Director for Western Electric, Lexington Road in Winston-Salem, N.C., Alcoa in Pittsburgh, Penn., and staff physician for Carolinas Medical Systems’ urgent care clinics in Marshville, Concord, and Monroe, N.C. Immediately preceding his death, he was employed as Medical Review Officer for National Diagnostics, Inc. in Charlotte. He was past president of the Occupational Medical Association. He is survived by his wife, Linda Charles Belk, and daughter Robin Belk Amick, both of Charlotte, sister Lila Belk Sims and husband Charles Eldred Sims, and one nephew, Barrett Charles Sims, all of Rock Hill, S.C. Wilma M. Boatwright
PAGELAND —Wilma M. Boatwright, 86, died Jan. 25, 2008. A graveside service was held Jan. 28 at Thompson Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield.
Boatwright was born in Lilesville, N.C., a daughter of Garfield and Cornelia Williams Meachum. She was a homemaker and attended Thompson Creek Baptist Church. Wilma was married to the late George Murray Boatwright and was also preceded in death by five sisters and a brother.
Surviving are sons Ray Marcus (Charlotte) Boatwright and James Neil Boatwright, both, of Ruby; four daughters, Avis B. (Vincent) Gulledge, of Kannapolis, N.C., Myrtle (Carroll) Raffaldt, of Chesterfield, Lois Ann (Ronnie) Jordan, of Ruby, and Bonnie (Tim) Moore, of Polkton, N.C. PAGELAND – The Rev. John T. Davis Jr, 77, died Jan. 29, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center-Union, Monroe, N.C. A funeral service was held Feb. 2 at First Baptist Church in Pageland, with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Davis, born in Ruby, was a son of the late Rev. J. Townley Davis Sr., and Ruth Viola Wadsworth Davis and was married to Georgia Courtney Davis. He was a graduate of Wingate and Catawba Colleges and received his BA degree. He attended Southern Seminary and South Eastern Seminary and was a graduate of Luther Rice Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity. He pastorates included High Point and Mt. Pisgah Baptist Churches in Pageland, S.C.; Union and Sandy Ridge Baptist Churches, Monroe, N.C.; Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Polkton, N.C.; Mt. PAGELAND - Linda Sue Funderburk, 55, died Jan. 25, 2008 at McLeod Hospital, Florence, S.C. A graveside service was held Jan. 30 with burial in the Salem Cemetery Pageland.
Funderburk, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of the late Allen Funderburk and Doretha Seegars. She was educated in the Chesterfield County public schools. She worked for the Pageland Cleaners diligently for many years. She was a kind, caring, and loving mother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed. If you needed her to listen or comfort you she was always there to confide in. She was like a mother to a lot of people; aside of her six children, she also helped raise her brothers and sisters as her own. She was a strong woman who was always there to love, support and give advise when needed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister Rosa Von Shands.

Lola Louise Hubbard
MT. CROGHAN — Lola Louise Hubbard, 88, died Jan. 17, 2008.
Born in Chesterfield County, she was the daughter of the late Verge and Eva Baker. She was the second of 15 children. At an early age, she dedicated her life to God and became an active member at Black Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Croghan. During the great immigration north, she moved to New York with her husband Mack N. Hubbard to build a better life for her family. There she developed and pursued a lifetime career as a skilled seamstress. Her Christian growth continued as she united with St. Marks Baptist Church and Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, respectively, both in Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon retiring, she and her husband enjoyed traveling, which often included trips across the country and cruises to the Caribbean. Eventually, she and her husband returned to her first church home at Black Creek Baptist Church and were welcomed with open arms. Throughout her Christian life, she served faithfully as a deaconess, a missionary, a Sunday school teacher, and in other ministries where needed.
Her husband, Deacon Mack Hubbard, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children Mary Jones, of Massapequa, N.Y., Benjamin Hubbard (Jesse), of Mt. Croghan, S.C., Joseph Hubbard (Jeannie), of Buena Park, Calif., Willie Hubbard (Patricia), of Indian Trail, N.C., Thomas Hubbard (Janie), of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., Anne Thomas (David), of Chicago, Ill.
She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, four sisters, and a host of relatives and friends.
Jessie Lee Lloyd
CHERAW – Jessie Lee Lloyd, 68, died Jan. 22, 2008 at the Cheraw Manor Nursing Home. A funeral service was held Jan. 25 at Foundry Hill Cemetery.
Lloyd, served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. After serving his country he moved to New York where he was a truck driver. He later returned to Cheraw where he worked at a Wood Veneer plant. He was a very soft spoken gentleman who was loved by all he met.
He was preceded in death by a nephew Harold Ellerbe.

Martin, born in Jefferson, was a daughter of the late Lewis S. and Ethel Gregory Horton. She graduated from Pageland High School in 1940.
She was preceded in death by brothers L.S. Horton Jr, Rembert G. Horton, and G. Wister Horton, sisters Reba H. Dodson and Polly H. Privette, and husbands Charles Pinkham and J.R. Bruce Martin.

Born in in Chesterfield County, Massey was the son of Goleva McCombs Pate and the late Zebe Massey. He confessed Christ at an early age and joined Salem United Methodist Church in Pageland. He attended the public schools of Chesterfield County. William enjoyed repairing cars and he especially loved auto body work.

Born in Wingate, N.C. Mills was a daughter of the late Edward Clyde and Mary Leonard Knight. She was a graduate of Union High School. Lib was a retired seamstress and poultry farmer along with her husband, the late George Everette Mills. She was a faithful member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she served as WMU leader, former Sunday school teacher, benevolence chairperson, and choir member. Lib was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a friend to all. She was preceded in death by a sister Madry Haney.

Moser was the daughter of the late Lula Harrell Joines and Sam Joines. Joyce confessed faith in Christ at an early age and joined Holy Temple Holiness Church of Ruby where she was an usher, secretary, and a Sabbath school teacher. She attended the public schools of Chesterfield County. She married Clarence Moser Jr. in 1955 and worked at Dan Rivers for 18 years before retiring in 1996.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Lula Mae Dixon, Cleo Ratliff, Idell Merritt, five brothers, Sam Joines, Cliff Joines, Harry Joines, James Joines, and Richard Joines.

Mrs. Rivers was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church, where she served in many positions, including WOM, choir member, and former Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Leroy Clark.

Davis, born in Ruby, was a son of the late Rev. J. Townley Davis Sr., and Ruth Viola Wadsworth Davis and was married to Georgia Courtney Davis. He was a graduate of Wingate and Catawba Colleges and received his BA degree. He attended Southern Seminary and South Eastern Seminary and was a graduate of Luther Rice Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity. He pastorates included High Point and Mt. ANDERSON, S.C. — Elizabeth Clarice Horton Pinkham Martin, 85, of Clemson Downs died Jan. 30, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb.2 in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with burial in the Pendleton Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Martin, born in Jefferson, was a daughter of the late Lewis S. and Ethel Gregory Horton. She graduated from Pageland High School in 1940.
She was preceded in death by brothers L.S. Horton Jr, Rembert G. Horton, and G. Wister Horton, sisters Reba H. Dodson and Polly H. Privette, and husbands Charles Pinkham and J.R. Bruce Martin.
Surviving are daughters Elizabeth P. (Pat) McAfee of Hendersonville, N.C. and Susanne Pinkham (Charles Bonfanti) of Taos, NM; grandsons, Lewis (Amy) McAfee of Ashville, N.C., Nathnaial Bonfanti, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Gabriel Bonfanti, of California; brothers S.F. Horton, of Loris, S.C. and Robert (Virginia) Horton, of Raleigh, N.C.; sister Madge Gulledge of Pageland, many nieces and nephews; and a group of dedicated friends in the Upstate.

William Bryant Massey
PAGELAND—William Bryant Massey, 64, died Fri. Jan. 25, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 30 at Salem United Methodist Church in Pageland.
Born in in Chesterfield County, Massey was the son of Goleva McCombs Pate and the late Zebe Massey. He confessed Christ at an early age and joined Salem United Methodist Church in Pageland. He attended the public schools of Chesterfield County. William enjoyed repairing cars and he especially loved auto body work.
Surviving William are his daughter, Teyoka Martin, of Charlotte, N.C.; son Bryant Massey, of Fayetteville, N.C.; mother Goleva Pate, of Pageland; brothers Robert “Clayton” Pate, of Pageland, and Thomas James Massey, of Troutman, N.C.; uncle Clarence Lockhart, of Pageland; three grandchildren, four nephews, four nieces, many great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
Mary Elizabeth ‘Lib’ Knight Mills
PAGELAND —Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Knight Mills, 80, died January 30, 2008. A funeral services was held Feb. 2 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
Born in Wingate, N.C. Mills was a daughter of the late Edward Clyde and Mary Leonard Knight. She was a graduate of Union High School. Lib was a retired seamstress and poultry farmer along with her husband, the late George Everette Mills. She was a faithful member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where she served as WMU leader, former Sunday school teacher, benevolence chairperson, and choir member. Lib was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a friend to all. She was preceded in death by a sister Madry Haney.
Surviving are daughters Jane (Johnny) Tomberlin, of Pageland, Regina (Everette) Cuthbertson, of Wingate, N.C., Marsha (Al) Johnson and Donna (Brett) Reese, all of Jefferson; brothers Boyd Knight and Don Knight, both of Wingate, N.C.; sisters Dot Austin, Myra Tomberlin, and Martha Thomas all of Wingate; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Joyce Joines Moser
RUBY— Joyce Joines Moser, 72, died Jan. 24, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 27 at Rock Spring Missionary Baptist Church in Ruby.
Moser was the daughter of the late Lula Harrell Joines and Sam Joines. Joyce confessed faith in Christ at an early age and joined Holy Temple Holiness Church of Ruby where she was an usher, secretary, and a Sabbath school teacher. She attended the public schools of Chesterfield County. She married Clarence Moser Jr. in 1955 and worked at Dan Rivers for 18 years before retiring in 1996.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Lula Mae Dixon, Cleo Ratliff, Idell Merritt, five brothers, Sam Joines, Cliff Joines, Harry Joines, James Joines, and Richard Joines.
Surviving Moser are a daughter Jean D. Moser, of Ruby; grandchildren Benita V. Moser, Jennifer L. Moser, both of Ruby, and Macyo (Angela) Moser, of Chesterfield; great-grandchilren, Tia, Jari, Deja, Tajh, all of Chesterfield, and Za’Brion Moser, of Ruby; sisters Mable Dixon, Audrey Griffin and Patricia Rivers, all of Chesterfield; sisters-in-law Hennie Joines, of Chesterfield, Katie (James) Ratliff and Ella Clark, both of Ruby, Dais Fair, of Cheraw, and Bertha Moser, of Baltimore, Md.; brothers-in-law Pastor Carlee (Evelyn) Moser, of Ruby, Thomas (Rosa) Moser, James Moser, John Moser, all of Ruby, and Luther Moser, of Greenville, S.C.; adopted daughter Patricia Covington, of Ruby; special cousins Thomas and Dorothy McBride of Denver, Colo.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Mary Douglas Purvis
CHESTERFIELD — Mary Douglas Purvis, 95, died January 28, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 30 at White Oak Presbyterian Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Born in Chesterfield County, Purvis was a daughter of the late Orland Harris and Beulah Waddell Douglas. She was a retired employee of Sonoco Industries, of Hartsville, S.C, with 33 years of service. Purvis was a lifelong member of White Oak Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 17 years, Baxter Purvis; brother, Lawton P. Douglas; and by two sisters, Lurline D. Jacobs, and Azalee D. Clanton.
Surviving are sisters Peg Griggs and Garrett D. Rivers, both of Chesterfield, and Faye D. Chewning, of Charlotte, N.C.; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends; special friend Susan Snow, and step children James Purvis and Joyce P. Wilkerson.

Mary Lou Rivers
PAGELAND — Mary Lou Rivers, age 72, died Jan. 31, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 3 at Providence Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Rivers was born in Pageland, a daughter of the late Clayton David and Lula Marze Clark. She was a graduate of Pageland High School and was a retired textile employee. Mrs. Rivers was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church, where she served in many positions, including WOM, choir member, and former Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Leroy Clark.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Harold E. Rivers; sons Edward E. (Pam) Rivers, of Wingate, N.C., and Jerry L. (Renee) Rivers, of Pageland; daughters Wanda (Philip) Carr of Linville, Va., and Rhonda (Robert) Sweatt, of Marshville, N.C.; brother: Horace (Martha) Clark, of Pageland,; sisters Effie (Bud) Parham of Cornelia, Ga., Betty Krimminger, of Charlotte, N.C., and Ann Smith, of Rincon, Ga.; grandchildren: Joseph (Megan) Rivers, Leanna Rivers, Kevin Sweatt, Kimberly Rivers, Katie Rivers, Steven Sweatt, Morgan Carr, Lauren Carr, and Jenna Carr; adopted daughter Abbey Irvine, and children, Nathan, Christopher, and Daniel; and special friends Melissa Bullard and her husband Mike, and children Jonathan Sweatt, Miranda Bullard, and Eric Bullard.

CHERAW —Robert Hugh Roscoe, 70, died Jan. 29, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 1 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, with burial at Teal Cemetery in Chesterfield.
Born in Chesterfield, Roscoe a son of the late John Gurley and Geneva Rivers Roscoe. He was a retired employee of Stanley Tools and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. Robert Hugh was preceded in death by a half brother Ralph Roscoe.
He is survived by brothers Billy (Frances) Roscoe, of Columbia, S.C., Reece (Bernicia) Roscoe, of Cheraw, and J.L. Roscoe, of Chesterfield; sisters Della Mae Hartwick and Pat Gainey, of Cheraw, Aronica (Bennie) Teal, of Chesterfield, and Mavis (Adolf) Beyersdorf, of Columbia; half-brothers Johnny Ray Roscoe, of Patrick, and Ervin Roscoe, of Wallace, S.C.; nine nephews and four nieces.

Born in Cheraw, White a daughter of the late Leo and Mable Louise Wilson Kimrey. She was a homemaker and a member of Cash Baptist Church. Patsy was married to the late J. B. White and was also preceded in death by brothers Jack W. Kimrey and Tommy L. Kimrey.
Surviving are sons Jimmy (Lyall) White and Johnny White, both of Cheraw; grandsons Andrew White and Jonathan White; brother Milton L. “Mickey” (Eva) Kimrey, of Cheraw; and sister-in-law Shirley Kimrey, of Darlington.
