KERSHAW— Sarah Jane Poston Faile, 55, died April 5, 2008 at Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville. Funeral services were held April 9 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
Faile was the daughter of the late Willie Robert Jim and Martha Jane Mangum Poston. Faile was the owner of E-Z Quick Mart on Highway 151 in the Angelus Community and a homemaker. She was also a devoted member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where she was a faithful Sunday school member and past Sunday school teacher and church training union teacher.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Roland Truesdale.
Surviving are her husband, James Allen Faile of the home; two children, Randal Faile and his wife Jennifer of Kershaw, Melissa Phillips and her husband Michael of Kingstree; three sisters, Kate Burris of Lancaster, Sandra Williams of Kershaw, Judy Talbert of Kershaw; two brothers, Richard Truesdale of Lancaster, Curtis Truesdale of Summerville, and a number of nieces and nephews.

RUBY — Jimmy Lee “Doc” Gregory, 58, died April 4, 2008. A funeral service was held April 8, 2008 at the Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Hartsville, S.C. with burial in the Church Cemetery.
Gregory, born in Hartsville, a son of the late Alford and Sally Hicks Gregory. He was a drywall contractor. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Jimmy was married to the late Joyce Elaine Gainey Gregory, and was also preceded in death by brothers, Billy and Kenneth Gregory and by sisters, Annette Watford, and Vera Peach.
Surviving are: daughter, Stacey Gregory (Adam) Catoe of Jefferson; brothers, Tommy Gregory of Chesterfield and Randell Gregory of McBee.

Owens, born in Darlington, S.C. a son of Oscar Owens and the late Lillie Mae Windham Owens. He was a retired pipe fitter with C & C Boilers. Owens was a member of Ruby Church of God. Bud was an avid hunter.

CHERAW —B.D. Phelps, 86, died April 10, 2008. Services were held April 13 at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, with burial in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Born in Supply, N.C. Phelps was a son of the late Robert Lemuel and Janie Simmons Phelps. He was the widower of Rosalie Clemmons Phelps. He was a member of Civil Conservation Corps. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. Phelps was retired from Becker County Sand and Gravel Company (50+ years) having served as Vice President. He was an avid fisherman, so much so, that he keep meticulous records of his prize catches. He was quite the intellectual and wordsmith, ever entwined in a crossword puzzle or delivering a pun. He enjoyed music (blue grass) being able to play by ear. Mr. Phelps love to garden and make wine with his grapes. He was known to be the cook for many celebratory events at work and with friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents listed above, a daughter, Martha E. Phelps and brothers, Homer Phelps, Albert Phelps, Audie Phelps, Coolidge Phelps, and Harley Phelps.

CHESTERFIELD — Ruby May Talbert Davidson, age 91, died April 4, 2008. Services were held April 7 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, with interment at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Davidson was born April 21, 1916, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Frank and Nicey Gainey Talbert. She was a retired seamstress and a homemaker. Ruby was married to the late William Robert Davidson, and was also preceded in death by her 2 daughters, Julia Rae D. Wilks and Bobbie D. Horne, and by her 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
She is survived by stepdaughter Shirley D.”Toonie” Mescher of Greensboro, N.C., nine grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren,

Deese was born March 15, 1939, in Bennettsville, S.C. the son of Katie Elizabeth Hancock Deese and the late Cleve John Deese. He was a former employee of Pillowtex and K-Mart.
He is survived by mother Katie Hancock Deese of Kannapolis N.C., sister Patsy Elaine Deese of Kannapolis N.C., and his loving bird “Pepper.”

She was born June 3, 1948 in Fort Mill, a daughter of the late Carl Wallace and Mary Elizabeth Boone Wallace. She attended Canaan Free Will Baptist Church and had been the cafeteria supervisor at Southside School.

Rollins, born in Cheraw, a son of George and Lois Rollins. He was a 2004 graduate of Cheraw High School and was an employee of Constar Industries. Mr. Rollins was a member of Southern Grace Full Gospel Church. Joe enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his friends, especially four-wheelin’, mud bogging, and playing golf. He was an avid Clemson fan. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, J.B. Rollins.

Sikes was born December 28, 1937 in Pageland, a daughter of Virginia Vaughn Haithcock and the late Charlie Haithcock. She was a retired secretary with Culp Weaving and was a former secretary with SLS Corp. Mrs. Sikes was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and a member of the Praise Team. Helen was married to the late Eli Sikes and was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Nadel.

Squires was born in Greensboro, N.C. a daughter of the late Gary Franklin and Rebecca Eddins Curtis. She was a homemaker. Sandi was married to the late Boyd Baxter “Skip” Squires, Jr. and was also preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Curtis Mann.

Harry Walker Weede
Laurinburg, N.C. — Harry Walker Weede, Sr., 94, died March 28, 2008, at Scotia Village, Laurinburg, N.C., where he has been a resident for nearly three years. Services were held March 31 at First Baptist Church in Cheraw, with interment following in Old St. David’s Cemetery.
Born December 17, 1913, in Plymouth, Washington County, N.C., Mr. Weede was a son of the late Lewis Tilden Weede and Roxanna Respass Weede. Educated in the public schools of Plymouth, he later managed a variety store in Scotland Neck, N.C., where he met his wife-to-be, Kate Conn Covington, then a teacher in the public schools of Scotland Neck.
Mr. and Mrs. Weede were married in 1938, the first couple to be married in the new sanctuary of Cheraw First Baptist Church. He was a member of that Church for almost 60 years and had served as a deacon.
In 1939 Mr. Weede joined the Colgate Palmolive Company as a traveling sales representative and later as district sales supervisor in an area consisting of portions of Virginia and North Carolina. Later in 1945 he accepted a position with the Allison-Erwin Company, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., as an area sales manager. Mr. Weede continued with Allison-Erwin until his retirement in Cheraw, S.C., in 1975.
Weede was an ardent follower and supporter of athletics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was a 25-year member of the Rams Club, and until recently, a season-ticket-holder who rarely missed a football game.
Weede was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 59 years, a native of Cheraw. Survivors include his children Katherine Weede Griggs of Cheraw, Harry Walker Weede, Jr., of Chapel Hill, N.C., Sally Weede Kingsley of Atlanta, GA, and William Lewis Weede of Greenville, S.C., ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

HARTSVILLE— Catherine Johnson Sparrow, 86, widow of Marion T. Sparrow, died April 2, 2008. Services were held April 5 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, with interment in Westview Memorial Cemetery.
Sparrow was born in Jefferson, a daughter of the late Raymond A. and Mary Parnell Johnson. She was retired from Hartsville Manufacturing and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Greensboro, N.C. — Sandra “Sandi” Curtis Squires, 59, died March 27, 2008. Services were held March 29 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in David’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield.
Squires was born in Greensboro, N.C. a daughter of the late Gary Franklin and Rebecca Eddins Curtis. She was a homemaker. Sandi was married to the late Boyd Baxter “Skip” Squires, Jr. and was also preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Curtis Mann.
She is survived by son Jason Squires and his fiancée Courtney Flinchum, of Greensboro, N.C., brothers: G.W. “Sam” (Maxine) Curtis of Greensboro, N.C. and Billy Ray Curtis of Chesterfield, sisters Patricia Gordon of Randleman, N.C. and Cheryl Curtis Gleason of Chesterfield, S.C., and a host of nieces and nephews.

Harry Walker Weede
Laurinburg, N.C. — Harry Walker Weede, Sr., 94, died March 28, 2008, at Scotia Village, Laurinburg, N.C., where he has been a resident for nearly three years. Services were held March 31 at First Baptist Church in Cheraw, with interment following in Old St. David’s Cemetery.
Born December 17, 1913, in Plymouth, Washington County, N.C., Mr. Weede was a son of the late Lewis Tilden Weede and Roxanna Respass Weede. Educated in the public schools of Plymouth, he later managed a variety store in Scotland Neck, N.C., where he met his wife-to-be, Kate Conn Covington, then a teacher in the public schools of Scotland Neck.
Mr. and Mrs. Weede were married in 1938, the first couple to be married in the new sanctuary of Cheraw First Baptist Church. He was a member of that Church for almost 60 years and had served as a deacon.
In 1939 Mr. Weede joined the Colgate Palmolive Company as a traveling sales representative and later as district sales supervisor in an area consisting of portions of Virginia and North Carolina. Later in 1945 he accepted a position with the Allison-Erwin Company, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., as an area sales manager. Mr. Weede continued with Allison-Erwin until his retirement in Cheraw, S.C., in 1975.
Weede was an ardent follower and supporter of athletics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was a 25-year member of the Rams Club, and until recently, a season-ticket-holder who rarely missed a football game.
Weede was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 59 years, a native of Cheraw. Survivors include his children Katherine Weede Griggs of Cheraw, Harry Walker Weede, Jr., of Chapel Hill, N.C., Sally Weede Kingsley of Atlanta, GA, and William Lewis Weede of Greenville, S.C., ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

RUBY—Wendell Fair died March 18, 2008 at the McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C. Funeral services were held Mar. 21 at Flemming Funeral Home Chapel in Chesterfield. He was the son of Daisy Lee Fair and the late Edward Eugene Fair. He attended the Chesterfield County public school system. Surviving are his mother, Daisy Lee Fair of Cheraw; wife, Patricia Fair of Ruby; a daughter, Patrice Fair of Ruby; four sons, Phillip Fair, Wendell Fair, Bradley Fair and Quincy Fair all of Ruby; sister, Wanda (Paul) Amos of Aston, Va.; four brothers, Henry (Gladys) Fair of Ruby, Jerry (Jennie) Fair of Marietta, Ga., Odell (Diane) Fair of Camden, and James (Dalphine) Fair of Mt. PAGELAND— Charles Ray Funderburk, 58, died at Carolina’s Medical Center-Union. A Funeral service was held Mar. 21 at the Flemming Funeral Home Chapel in Pageland. He was the son of Doretha and Allen Funderburk. He was educated in the Chesterfield County public schools and attended Cleveland Community College in Shelby, N.C. where he received his certificate in welding. He was employed by Brooks Fields in Monroe and worked there until his illness. Bro. Charles joined Piney Grove A.M.E. Zion Church in Mount Croghan in 2001. In 2002 he was called into the ministry. He did his trial sermon in July 2004. He was an Assistant to the Pastor and also served in social concerns, prison ministry, adult Sunday school teacher, Christian education director, ACE president, class leader #5, and vice-president of evangelism. He was in his third year of conference study. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters: Rosa Von Seegars Shands and Linda Sue Funderburk.

Jenkins was a retired Chesterfield County School Teacher with 38 years of service. She was a lifelong member of Ruby Baptist Church. Eloise was married to the late Jesse Thomas Jenkins and was also preceded in death by a brother, William Clyde Sellers, Jr. and by her sister, Mary Lee Parker.

Ruth Sellers Wannamaker
WHITE ROCK, S.C. - Ruth Sellers Wannamaker, 91, died March 22, 2008. A funeral service was held March 24, 2008 at Hopewell Baptist Church in Chesterfield, S.C. with burial in the church cemetery.
Wannamaker, born in Chesterfield County to Thomas Sinclair and Cora Oliver Sellers, she was one of 14 children who lived past infancy. Ruth was a beautiful lady, who was a talented seamstress, enjoyed gardening, was an excellent cook, and loved to help others. She spent most of her life in Hartsville, S.C. and was a longtime member of West Hartsville Baptist Church. Most recently she was a resident of the Lowman Home in White Rock, S.C..She was predeceased by brothers, Lloyd, Jim, Charles, Bert Lee, Ed and Lin Sellers, and sister, Mary Huntley.

FLORIDA - Wilton B. “Mack” Mackall, 88, died March 15, 2008. A grave-side service was held March 21, at Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Mackall was born in Crafton, PA. He attended schools in Pittsburgh, PA. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II from 1942 to 1945; later, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Mackall started working for the State of Fla. Veterans Affairs in 1946, and rose to serve in 2 Governors’ Cabinets as Fla. State Director of Veterans Affairs. After retiring from State government, he thereafter served as Special Assistant to the Director of the VA Medical Center-Bay Pines, Fla.. Mackall was a 60-year member of the VFW, and a Life Member of both the American Legion and also the Disabled American Veterans. He was Past President of the National Veterans Service Officers’ Association of America.
Surviving are: wife of 48 years, Julia Davis Mackall of the home; sister-in-law; brothers-in-law; and by nieces and nephews.

POLKTON, N.C.—Dorothy Coble Russell, 95, died Mar. 16, 2008 at the Brian Center in Monroe. A funeral service was held Mar. 18 at the Chapel of Morgan and Son Funeral Home with burial following in the Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Russell, born in Randolph County a daughter of the late John and Vandelia Coble. She was widowed by her husband Edgar Earl Russell. Russell delighted in caring and cooking for her family and friends. The grandchildren have wonderful memories of her fried potatoes, fried apple pies, and hot butter and sugar biscuits. She enjoyed quilting with her twin sister Arve for many years. She and her late husband shared the bounty of their vegetable garden, which they enjoyed with their friends and family.

He was born May 16, 1930 in Pageland, S.C. to Ben and Lillie Atkinson. He was retired from the DuPont Company in Camden, S.C. He passed away at the Home Place Assisted Living in Eastman, Ga. Johnson, born in Chesterfield a daughter of the late James Isaac and Pansy Aline Davidson Lewis. She was a retired inspector with Highland Industries with 42 years of service. Johnson was a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church. She was married for 45 years to the late Fletcher J. Johnson, Jr. and was also preceded in death by son, Dr. Jimmy Johnson, brothers, Wilson, Tommy, William, and Bonnie Lewis, and by sisters, Mary Lee Gulledge and Martha Stafford.

Autry born in China Grove, NC a daughter of Margaret Abernathy Suggs and the late Olin Gordon. Brenda was raised by her grandparents Fred and Annie Abernathy. She was a homemaker.

Boan born in Cheraw, SC a son of the late Ira Walker Boan, Sr. and Mattie Lou Board Boan. He was a graduate of Cheraw High School and a retired sales manager with American Bakeries. Boan was a lifelong, faithful, member of Westside Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and member of the American Legion Post 74.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Sarah Phillips Boan, his brothers, Ira W. Boan, Jr. and Paul J. Boan, and by a sister, Edell Boan Polson.

Atwater Huntley
PAGELAND—Atwater Huntley, 76, died March 3, 2008. Funeral services were held March 8 at King’s Funeral Home Chapel in Pageland. He was the son of James and Ola Huntley. He was known as “Ug” to family and friends. Juanita mistook “Ug” for Earl, but learning of the mistake she continued to prefer Earl as her term of endearment. To this day, he is known by “Earl” to his Easterling family. Atwater spent most of his life in Pageland as a farmer. He did however serve his country in the Korean War. In later years, he was employed by Pageland Screen Printers from where he retired. Though farming continued to be his passion, he prided himself in some of the juiciest sweetest watermelons around. If you knew Atwater, you knew that he loved to talk and talk and talk… It was not uncommon to say multiple goodbyes before parting ways. His kind heart, insightful ways, keen wit, and old sayings will be missed by all. If he loved you, you knew it; if he could help you, he would.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lillian Johnson, and his brothers Ivory, Hattye, and Walter Huntley. Surviving are: wife, Juanita Easterling Huntley; his children, Angela Lucas (Owen), Gregory Huntley, Veronica PoPo (Felix), and Gerald Huntley; his sister, Muriel Johnson; his brothers, Dillon Huntley, James Huntley (Johnsie), and Douglas Huntley; four grandchildren, Marquese and Trenikia Mitchell and DeAnna and Owen “Trey” Lucas, III; two great-grandchildren; a special niece, Sherby Blakeney; two special sisters-in-law, Jessie Conrad and Catherine Huntley; brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

King born in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Henry Frank and Mary Etta “Mollie” Knight King. She was a graduate of Roper Hospital School of Nursing in Charleston, SC, and received her certification in Public Health Nursing from Georgia Peabody College. She also completed additional courses at the University of North Carolina and at Furman University. Bea retired in 1974 from Greenville County Health Department as coordinating nurse in Home Health Services after 24 years of service.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Foster King, sisters, Lela K. Carr and Vivian K. Adams, and by a dear friend Peggy Davis.

HARTSVILLE - The Rev. Vernon Lewis, 63, died March 9, 2008. A funeral service was held March 12, 2008 at Pine View Baptist Church, Chesterfield, with burial in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Hartsville.
Rev. Lewis born in Hartsville, a son of the late Maxie Brooks and Ruth Isgett Lewis. He was a graduate of Galilee Bible Institution with a degree in Theology, and was a Baptist Minister and Building Contractor. Rev. Lewis was former pastor of Pine View Baptist Church and New Hope Baptist Church, and served as interim pastor of Brown Springs, Mt. Olivet, and Piney Plains Baptist Churches. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.
Rev. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, James “Pete” Lewis, and Jerry “John” Lewis and by his sister, Valerie “Ann” Dixon.
Surviving are: wife Shirley Lambert Lewis of the home; son, Lawrence V. “Larry” Lewis, Jr. of Hartsville, and his fiancé Kimberly Dawn Smith; daughter, Shirley Elaine (Steve) Riley of Hartsville; son-in-law, Pete Starling of Patrick; brother, Rev. She was a retired Library Assistant with the Chesterfield County Library and a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Lib was married to the late John B. “Jake” Maloch and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Maloch and by her three brothers, Jack, Edward, and Son Hill.

CHERAW – Lloyd Merriman, 85, died March 6, 2008. A funeral service was held March 11, 2008 at Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church where he was a member.
Merriman, born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Leon and Leanna Streater Merriman. He was a multi-talented individual who was self taught and multi-disciplined at many trades. This led him to be dedicated employee of Calvin Rivers Farms and self employed as an auto mechanic. As a very respected and sociable man, he had an extensive circle of friends. He was a principled and outspoken individual and he embodied a very vibrant classy spirit. No one who ever met him could forget him.
He was preceded in death by wife, Ada Mae Nivens Merriman and siblings, Floyd Merriman, Willies Merriman, Burlin Merriman, Donetta Leak and Mary Pegues.

Rosa Woodward Wise
RUBY - Rosa Woodward Wise, 90, died March 12, 2008. A funeral service was held March 15, 2008 at Fairview Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Wise, born in Ruby, a daughter of the late Joseph Hebron Woodward and Mary Elizabeth Steen Woodward. She moved to Kannapolis, NC as a young girl and after the start of WWII, she and her lifelong friend ‘Merle” Overcash went to Bridgeport, Conn., where they became original “Rosie the Rivioters” by working in a shipyard. She eventually returned to the Carolinas where she married Mr. Roscoe Wise. Before returning to Ruby, they settled in Kannapolis, NC for a short time where they both worked in the cotton mills. After relocating back to Ruby, SC Mrs. Rosa eventually became a homemaker and caretaker for the elderly and sick. She did this for many years. Rosa was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Grace W. Williams and Sarah W. Baker.
Surviving are: daughter, Paula Lynn Wise of Ruby; stepson, Charles Lynn Wise of Lexington, NC; brother, Eugene “Gene” (Lona Mae) Woodward of Ruby, sisters, Cora Bell Grass of Kannapolis, NC and Beatrice Oliver of Ruby;

Atwater Huntley
PAGELAND—Atwater Huntley, 76, died March 3, 2008. Funeral services were held March 8 at King’s Funeral Home Chapel in Pageland. He was the son of James and Ola Huntley. He was known as “Ug” to family and friends. Juanita mistook “Ug” for Earl, but learning of the mistake she continued to prefer Earl as her term of endearment. To this day, he is known by “Earl” to his Easterling family. Atwater spent most of his life in Pageland as a farmer. He did however serve his country in the Korean War. In later years, he was employed by Pageland Screen Printers from where he retired. Though farming continued to be his passion, he prided himself in some of the juiciest sweetest watermelons around. If you knew Atwater, you knew that he loved to talk and talk and talk… It was not uncommon to say multiple goodbyes before parting ways. His kind heart, insightful ways, keen wit, and old sayings will be missed by all. If he loved you, you knew it; if he could help you, he would.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lillian Johnson, and his brothers Ivory, Hattye, and Walter Huntley. Surviving are: wife, Juanita Easterling Huntley; his children, Angela Lucas (Owen), Gregory Huntley, Veronica PoPo (Felix), and Gerald Huntley; his sister, Muriel Johnson; his brothers, Dillon Huntley, James Huntley (Johnsie), and Douglas Huntley; four grandchildren, Marquese and Trenikia Mitchell and DeAnna and Owen “Trey” Lucas, III; two great-grandchildren; a special niece, Sherby Blakeney; two special sisters-in-law, Jessie Conrad and Catherine Huntley; brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

CHESTERFIELD - Berniece K. “Bea” King, 97, died March 9, 2008. A funeral service was held March 11, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
King born in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Henry Frank and Mary Etta “Mollie” Knight King. She was a graduate of Roper Hospital School of Nursing in Charleston, SC, and received her certification in Public Health Nursing from Georgia Peabody College. She also completed additional courses at the University of North Carolina and at Furman University. Bea retired in 1974 from Greenville County Health Department as coordinating nurse in Home Health Services after 24 years of service.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Foster King, sisters, Lela K. Carr and Vivian K. Adams, and by a dear friend Peggy Davis.
Surviving are: brother Frank King of Salisbury, NC; sisters, Sue Lee Harmon of Chesterfield, SC, Julia (Bill) Hunter of Charlotte, NC, Helen (Dr. Jerry) Perry, and Johnnie Long of Chesterfield, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.

HARTSVILLE - The Rev. Vernon Lewis, 63, died March 9, 2008. A funeral service was held March 12, 2008 at Pine View Baptist Church, Chesterfield, with burial in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Hartsville.
Rev. Lewis born in Hartsville, a son of the late Maxie Brooks and Ruth Isgett Lewis. He was a graduate of Galilee Bible Institution with a degree in Theology, and was a Baptist Minister and Building Contractor. Rev. Lewis was former pastor of Pine View Baptist Church and New Hope Baptist Church, and served as interim pastor of Brown Springs, Mt. Olivet, and Piney Plains Baptist Churches. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.
Rev. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, James “Pete” Lewis, and Jerry “John” Lewis and by his sister, Valerie “Ann” Dixon.
Surviving are: wife Shirley Lambert Lewis of the home; son, Lawrence V. “Larry” Lewis, Jr. of Hartsville, and his fiancé Kimberly Dawn Smith; daughter, Shirley Elaine (Steve) Riley of Hartsville; son-in-law, Pete Starling of Patrick; brother, Rev. Maloch born in Darlington County, SC a daughter of the late James Wilcox Hill and Louise Jackson Hill. She was a retired Library Assistant with the Chesterfield County Library and a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Lib was married to the late John B. “Jake” Maloch and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Maloch and by her three brothers, Jack, Edward, and Son Hill.

CHERAW – Lloyd Merriman, 85, died March 6, 2008. A funeral service was held March 11, 2008 at Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church where he was a member.
Merriman, born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Leon and Leanna Streater Merriman. He was a multi-talented individual who was self taught and multi-disciplined at many trades. This led him to be dedicated employee of Calvin Rivers Farms and self employed as an auto mechanic. As a very respected and sociable man, he had an extensive circle of friends. He was a principled and outspoken individual and he embodied a very vibrant classy spirit. No one who ever met him could forget him.
He was preceded in death by wife, Ada Mae Nivens Merriman and siblings, Floyd Merriman, Willies Merriman, Burlin Merriman, Donetta Leak and Mary Pegues.

Rosa Woodward Wise
RUBY - Rosa Woodward Wise, 90, died March 12, 2008. A funeral service was held March 15, 2008 at Fairview Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Wise, born in Ruby, a daughter of the late Joseph Hebron Woodward and Mary Elizabeth Steen Woodward. She moved to Kannapolis, NC as a young girl and after the start of WWII, she and her lifelong friend ‘Merle” Overcash went to Bridgeport, Conn., where they became original “Rosie the Rivioters” by working in a shipyard. She eventually returned to the Carolinas where she married Mr. Roscoe Wise. Before returning to Ruby, they settled in Kannapolis, NC for a short time where they both worked in the cotton mills. After relocating back to Ruby, SC Mrs. Rosa eventually became a homemaker and caretaker for the elderly and sick. She did this for many years. Rosa was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Grace W. Williams and Sarah W. Baker.
Surviving are: daughter, Paula Lynn Wise of Ruby; stepson, Charles Lynn Wise of Lexington, NC; brother, Eugene “Gene” (Lona Mae) Woodward of Ruby, sisters, Cora Bell Grass of Kannapolis, NC and Beatrice Oliver of Ruby;

CHESTERFIELD - Robert Darree Davis, 71, died, Feb. 26, 2008, at his home.
A funeral service was held Feb. 29, 2008 at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church with burial in the Church Cemetery.
Davis born, in Morven, NC, a son of the late Ruben Nathan and Effie Jane White Davis. He was a former department manager with 38 years of service at Chesterfield Webbing and was a retired employee of Delta Mills with 10 years of service. Davis was a member of the WOW Lodge 516 and a member of the Sandy Plains United Methodist Church.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, Lonnie, Roy, Tyler, C.E., Francis, and Charles Davis and by sisters, Margaret D. Goodale, Madge D. Rogers, and Naomi D. Westberry.
Surviving are: wife of 50 years, Mildred Lee Davis of the home; son, Richard D. “Ricky” Davis; daughters, Teresa D. (Larry) Smith and Tammy D. He is survived by his wife, Monika Belk of Pageland; two sons, Charles Thomas Belk of Pageland and Travis Randolph of Betteville, PA; and daughter, Melissa Cox of Jefferson, SC; four brothers, J.B. Belk of Pageland, Donny Belk of Mt. Croghan, Ricky Belk and Charles Allen Belk of Pageland; and two sisters, Vickie Rollings of Pageland and Ellen Dimmick of Matthews, N.C., and three grandchildren. Elgego Lockhart King
JEFFERSON—Elgego Lockhart King, 95, died Feb. 14, 2008. Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at Hopewell Baptist Church in McBee, S.C. She was born December 27, 1912 as the daughter of the late Jim and Minnie Blakeney Lockhart in Chesterfield County, S.C. At an early age, she dedicated her life to God and became an active member at Oro United Methodist Church in Pageland. On March 1, 1929 she was united in marriage to the late Bill King and to this union two children were born. In 1980 King moved to Washington, DC to live with her daughter. While living in Washington, DC, she joined Springfield Baptist Church. She was also very active at the Modern City Dwelling Center and went everyday until she became very ill. King was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Community Chapter #205 in McBee, S.C. and joined the Queen of Sheba Chapter #2 while living in the District of Columbia. Surviving her are a daughter, Mary Frances Blakeney of Washington, D.C.; a son, Billy King of Mitchellville, M.D.; an adopted daughter, Peggy Alsbrook of Monroe, N.C.; a granddaughter, Zelda of Bowie, M.D.; a grandson, Ricky of Washington, D.C.; a granddaughter-in-law, Yvette of Fayetteville, N.C.; a great granddaughter, Kristyn and a great grandson, Graham both of Fayetteville, N.C.; three sisters, Vera Sowell of Philadelphia, P.A., Margaret McGrady and Louise Smothers both of Newark, NJ; one sister-in-law, Sally Brewer of Florence, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Betty Clark Krimminger
CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Betty Clark Krimminger, 76, died Fri. Feb. 22, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy in Charlotte, N.C. She was born April 9, 1931 in Pageland, a daughter of the late Clayton Clark and the late Lula Marze Clark. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis Krimminger, one brother, William Roy Clark, and one sister, Mary Lou Rivers. She attended Pageland High School and lived most of her life in Charlotte, Pageland, and Wingate. Krimminger is survived by one son: Danny Krimminger and wife Judy of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Donna West and husband Ritchie of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Horace Clark and wife Martha of Pageland; two sisters, Effie Parham and husband Bud of Cornelia, Ga., and Ann Smith of Rincon, Ga.; two grandchildren, Graham West of the US Air Force and Garrett West of Charlotte, N.C. Graveside funeral services were held Sun. Feb. 24 in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Caroll Anthony. While living in Washington, DC, she joined Springfield Baptist Church. She was also very active at the Modern City Dwelling Center and went everyday until she became very ill. King was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Community Chapter #205 in McBee, S.C. and joined the Queen of Sheba Chapter #2 while living in the District of Columbia. CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Betty Clark Krimminger, 76, died Fri. Feb. 22, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy in Charlotte, N.C. She was born April 9, 1931 in Pageland, a daughter of the late Clayton Clark and the late Lula Marze Clark. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis Krimminger, one brother, William Roy Clark, and one sister, Mary Lou Rivers. She attended Pageland High School and lived most of her life in Charlotte, Pageland, and Wingate. Krimminger is survived by one son: Danny Krimminger and wife Judy of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Donna West and husband Ritchie of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Horace Clark and wife Martha of Pageland; two sisters, Effie Parham and husband Bud of Cornelia, Ga., and Ann Smith of Rincon, Ga.; two grandchildren, Graham West of the US Air Force and Garrett West of Charlotte, N.C. SOCIETY HILL, S.C. - Dessie Brigman Barrington, 74, died Feb.21, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 23 at Faith Community Baptist Church with burial at Pine Crest Cemetery, Gibson, N.C.
Barrington was born Feb. 14, 1934 in Bennettsville, S.C. a daughter of the late Willie Lester and Flossie Steen Brigman. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Community Baptist Church. Dessie was married to the late Nelson Eugene Barrington.
She was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Mary Parker, and Regina Wallace, and 1 brother, Fred Ray Brigman.
Surviving are: son, Nelson (Vonda) Barrington of Society Hill, S.C.; daughter, Dorothy B. ROCK HILL - Mary Kathryn Blakeney, 94, died Feb. 19, 2008. A funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 23 at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel with burial at White Plains Cemetery in Jefferson, S.C.
Blakeney, born September 29, 1913 near Pageland, S.C., to the late Jim and Fannie Pigg Hicks. Kathryn and the late J. T. Blakeney, Jr. were married in May of 1936 and made their home near Lancaster, S.C. They later moved to Rock Hill where they remained except for a period of time during World War II when they lived in Baltimore, Maryland to work in defense plants producing planes. Kathryn was an accomplished seamstress and quilt maker. Over the years, many of her friends and family have enjoyed wedding dresses and quilts she made for them. Kathryn was also very involved in her church and eager to see it grow.
Kathryn was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Brown of Kingstree, S.C.
Surviving are two sisters, Irene Haselden of Andrews, S.C. and Billie Funderburk of Pageland, S.C.; a brother, James C. Hicks and wife, Marjorie of Blacksburg, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews and their families. One niece, Ellen Greene and her husband, Jerry reside in Rock Hill, S.C.

Lola Louise Hubbard
MT. CROGHAN — Lola Louise Hubbard, 88, died Jan. 17, 2008.
Born in Chesterfield County, she was the daughter of the late Verge and Eva Baker. She was the second of 15 children. At an early , she dedicated her life to God and became an active member at Black Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Croghan.
During the great immigration north, she moved to New York with her husband Mack N. Hubbard to build a better life for her family. There she developed and pursued a lifetime career as a skilled seamstress. Her Christian growth continued as she united with St. Marks Baptist Church and Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, respectively, both in Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon retiring, she and her husband enjoyed traveling, which often included trips across the country and cruises to the Caribbean. Eventually, she and her husband returned to her first church home at Black Creek Baptist Church and were welcomed with open arms.
Throughout her Christian life, she served faithfully as a deaconess, a missionary, a Sunday school teacher, and in other ministries where needed.
Her husband, Deacon Mack Hubbard, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children Mary Jones, of Massapequa, N.Y., Benjamin Hubbard (Jesse), of Mt. Croghan, S.C., Joseph Hubbard (Jeannie), of Buena Park, Calif., Willie Hubbard (Patricia), of Indian Trail, N.C., Thomas Hubbard (Janie), of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., Anne Thomas (David), of Chicago, Ill.
She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, four sisters, and a host of relatives and friends.

A native of Pageland, S.C., Moore was a son of the late Eugene J. Moore and the late Lela Wallace Moore. He retired from working for the state of S.C., was a Masonic member, and of the Baptist faith.

PAGELAND—Thelma Allsbrook Brewer Murphy died Feb. 12, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 16 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was the daughter of the late Eleanor Allsbrook and Joseph and Emma Covington Brewer. She was a graduate of Butler High School in Hartsville, S.C. Upon graduating, she moved to New York. She married the late Scott M. Murphy, Sr. on Feb. 1, 1947 and they had a son, Scott M. Murphy, Jr. who preceded her in death. Thelma and Scott were the proprietors of Murphy’s Dry Cleaning in Bronx, New York. She served in many capacities at the cleaners including seamstress. Her career also included working for the late Dr. Roosevelt Gathings and providing clerical services at a law firm. Thelma was reared in a Christian home and as a child attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Pageland. She joined Mount Vernon Heights Congregational Church while living in Mount Vernon, New York. Upon returning to Pageland, she resumed her membership at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and served in numerous capacities.
Surviving are a grandson, Shawn (Shnetha) Fisher; two grandchildren, Taniya Fisher and Niko Fisher all of Jonesboro, Ga.; a special nephew, Gerald (Susie) Watson of Charlotte, N.C.; a devoted cousin, Dorothy Moore of Pageland; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

JEFFERSON — Ray Harvey Oliver, 66, died Feb. 21, 2008 at his home. A funeral service was held Feb. 23 at Almetta Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Oliver was born June 8, 1941 in Pageland, S.C. a son of the late Reverend Arthur Ganson and Desnie Autrey Oliver. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School. Ray was a former employee of Springs Industries with 28 years of service and was a retired EMT – Intermediate with Chesterfield County Ambulance Service with 26 years of service. He was also a member for 26 years with the Jefferson Rescue Squad. Oliver was a former member and deacon of Almetta Baptist Church for many years, and was now a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Pageland, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gayle Ann Maree Oliver and by his brother, Rev. Kenneth Oliver.

Turnage, born July 18, 1943, in Patrick, S.C., son of Martha Polson Moore and the late Maxie Gardner Turnage.
He was a retired auto mechanic.

KINSTON, N.C — Veda Freeman Watson died Feb. 19, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 23 at Howard-Carter Funeral Home in Kinston, N.C., with burial at Westview Cemetery, Kinston, N.C.
Veda was born and raised in Chesterfield, SC, the daughter of the late Mildred Douglass Freeman and James Monroe Freeman of Chesterfield. In 1948, she married Thomas Junius Watson and moved to Kinston, N.C. in 1954. She worked as a supervisor at Caswell Center, where she retired in 1989. Veda was a member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church where she was an active member and sang in the choir for many years. She loved her family and friends, and one of her greatest joys was to spend time with and cook for them. She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries throughout the world. Five years ago, due to declining health, she moved to Raleigh to be closer to her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. “June Bug” Watson.

She was the daughter of the late Eleanor Allsbrook and Joseph and Emma Covington Brewer. She was a graduate of Butler High School in Hartsville, S.C. Upon graduating, she moved to New York. She married the late Scott M. Murphy, Sr. on Feb. 1, 1947 and they had a son, Scott M. Murphy, Jr. who preceded her in death. Thelma and Scott were the proprietors of Murphy’s Dry Cleaning in Bronx, New York. She served in many capacities at the cleaners including seamstress. Her career also included working for the late Dr. Roosevelt Gathings and providing clerical services at a law firm. Thelma was reared in a Christian home and as a child attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Pageland. She joined Mount Vernon Heights Congregational Church while living in Mount Vernon, New York. Upon returning to Pageland, she resumed her membership at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and served in numerous capacities.
Surviving are a grandson, Shawn (Shnetha) Fisher; two grandchildren, Taniya Fisher and Niko Fisher all of Jonesboro, Ga.; a special nephew, Gerald (Susie) Watson of Charlotte, N.C.; a devoted cousin, Dorothy Moore of Pageland; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Ray Harvey Oliver
JEFFERSON — Ray Harvey Oliver, 66, died Feb. 21, 2008 at his home. A funeral service was held Feb. 23 at Almetta Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Oliver was born June 8, 1941 in Pageland, S.C. a son of the late Reverend Arthur Ganson and Desnie Autrey Oliver. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School. Ray was a former employee of Springs Industries with 28 years of service and was a retired EMT – Intermediate with Chesterfield County Ambulance Service with 26 years of service. He was also a member for 26 years with the Jefferson Rescue Squad. Oliver was a former member and deacon of Almetta Baptist Church for many years, and was now a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Pageland, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gayle Ann Maree Oliver and by his brother, Rev. Kenneth Oliver.
Surviving are: wife, Darla Ann Rollings Oliver of the home; son, Johnny Oliver; daughter of Joy Belk, both Lancaster, S.C.; three step-daughters, Michelle Allen of Hamlet, N.C., Jessica Blackwell of Pageland, S.C., and Angela Rollings of Jefferson, S.C.; three sisters, Rachel Winburn of McBee, Ola Faye Johnson, and Janice Lowery both of Jefferson; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild and was Pa Pa to many others; several nieces and nephews.

Maxie Gardner Turnage
PATRICK - Maxie Gardner Turnage, Jr., 64, died Feb. 18, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 21, at the Turnage Home with burial in the Polson Family Cemetery.
Turnage, born July 18, 1943, in Patrick, S.C., son of Martha Polson Moore and the late Maxie Gardner Turnage.
He was a retired auto mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Tyrone Johnson.
Surviving are: wife Vondell Johnson Turnage of the home; son, Dan (Michelle) Turnage of Patrick, S.C.; daughter, Connie (Steven) Lantz of Sumter, S.C.; mother, Martha Moore of Eastover, S.C.; three grandchildren, Rebecca Bloedow, Ryan Bloedow, and Nicholas Turnage; one great-grandchild, Rylie Brooke Marshall; one sister, Patricia Johnson (John) Sutton of Hartsville, S.C.; sister-in-law, Rita Ann Johnson of Sumter, S.C.; stepfather, George Johnson of Cheraw, S.C.; special aunt, Margaret Vann of Patrick, S.C.

Veda Freeman Watson
KINSTON, N.C — Veda Freeman Watson died Feb. 19, 2008. A funeral service was held Feb. 23 at Howard-Carter Funeral Home in Kinston, N.C., with burial at Westview Cemetery, Kinston, N.C.
Veda was born and raised in Chesterfield, SC, the daughter of the late Mildred Douglass Freeman and James Monroe Freeman of Chesterfield. In 1948, she married Thomas Junius Watson and moved to Kinston, N.C. in 1954. She worked as a supervisor at Caswell Center, where she retired in 1989. Veda was a member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church where she was an active member and sang in the choir for many years. She loved her family and friends, and one of her greatest joys was to spend time with and cook for them. She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries throughout the world. Five years ago, due to declining health, she moved to Raleigh to be closer to her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. “June Bug” Watson.
Surviving are : daughters, Linda Watson (Tom) Hicks and of Amarillo, TX, and Susan Watson Liverman and Gene Liverman of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Mazie Freeman Hales and Mary Sue Freeman of Pensacola Beach, FL and Sarah Ann Freeman Simms of Sumter, SC; grandson Brian Thomas Hicks and granddaughter Kelly Yvonne Hicks, both of Amarillo, TX; great-grandchildren Ryan Thomas Hicks and Chase Anderson Hicks of Amarillo, TX.
