Billy Ward ‘Bill’ Ballard
PAGELAND— Billy Ward (Bill) Ballard, 82, of Pageland, S.C. died Aug. 20, 2007 at his home in Pageland.
Born Oct. 3, 1925 in the Camp Creek Community of Lancaster County, S.C., he was the son of the late Dewey Otis Balllard and Juanita Stogner Ballard. A graduate of Lancaster High School, he served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and participated in the occupation of Japan following the Japanese surrender in 1945.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he returned to his native home of Lancaster where he met and married the woman who would be his wife of 59 years, the former Betty Rae Hinson. He is survived by his wife, children: Burnie William (Bonnie) Ballard, of Pageland, George Eric (Jonnette) Ballard, of Cheraw, Otis Bradford “Brad” (Debbie) Ballard, of Cheraw, and Deidre Betts “DeDe” (Craig) Cato, of Pageland; sister Mary Brown Hinson, of Lancaster; and grandchildren Jason Ballard, John Ballard, Dru Ballard, Kyle Cato, Kaylee Cato, Katherine Ballard, Michael Ballard, and Amanda K. Earley.
After moving his family to the nearby town of Pageland in 1956, Ballard established himself in that community over the course of his 81 year life as an active businessman, first as the managing partner of a farm implement sales concern known as the Pageland Implement Company and later as a sales representative for Deutz U.S.A. A.G. and the J.I. Case Company. In later life, he concluded his business career as owner and operator of a retail tire store, Tire Country, located in the nearby town of Cheraw, until his retirement in 1991.
A member and former Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Pageland, he was, until recently, an assistant teacher of the Millon Tucker Sunday School class. He was also an active member and office-holder of numerous community-based religious, fraternal, and service organizations including: The Pageland Lion’s Club, Mt. Moriah Lodge A.F.M., Sandhill’s Shrine Club, Smith Grave’s Post 92 of the American Legion, Pageland VFW, and Gideon’s International. He was a life member of the NRA, an advocate and defender of the 2nd Amendment, and determined opponent of all politically-based gun control initiatives.
In addition to his business, religious and fraternal pursuits, Ballard was also a political activist. A long-time adherent to and activist of the Republican Party, he served as a campaign volunteer for numerous local, state and national Republican candidates. In recent years he also served as GOP State Executive Committeeman form his home county of Chesterfield and as a delegate to several state party conventions. In non-partisan elections, he was elected to two consecutive terms as a city councilman in his adopted home town of Pageland.
A funeral service was held Aug. 24 at Pageland First Baptist Church with burial in Lancaster Memorial Park, 1389 Memorial Park Road, Lancaster, S.C.

Jack “Jackie” A. Davis
JEFFERSON— Jack “Jackie” A. Davis, 66, died Aug. 21, 2007. A funeral was held Aug. 23, 2007 at Jefferson First Baptist Church with burial in Jefferson cemetery.
Davis was the son of the late Jack Lacy and Alice Brock Davis and a retired U.S. Mail Carrier and former owner of Jefferson Auto Parts. He was a Mason, Shriner (Jamil Temple), and a member of Jefferson First Baptist Church, White Plains Country Club, and Past Master of Macedonia Lodge #239.
Surviving are son Bud (Cindy) Davis, of Jefferson; daughter Jan (Geff) Ruddell, of Evansville, IN; step-son Kevin Whitman, of Jefferson, Ga.; step-daughter Stephanie Robbins, of Easley, S.C.; brothers James T. (Wanda) Davis, of Pageland, and Ted (Pam) Blackwell, of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren Michael McCollum, Bryan McCollum, Lindsay Davis, Lauren Davis, and four step-grandchildren.

Felisha Renee Funderburk
PAGELAND - Felisha Renee Funderburk, 19, died Aug. 20, 2007 at Springs Memorial Hospital, Lancaster, S.C. A funeral service was held Aug. 23 at Flemming Funeral Home Chapel in Pageland with burial in Oro United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Funderburk, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of Heyward and Audrey Funderburk. She graduated with honors from Central High School in May 2006.
Surviving, along with parents, are sisters Sheketa and Chandra Funderburk, of Pageland; brother Chadrick (Chad) Funderburk, of Pageland; grandmother Henrietta Covington, of Pageland; niece Ceniyah; special friend Antwon Mitchell, of Pageland; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

The Rev. Lester F. Gaddy
CHESTERFIELD— The Rev. Lester F. Gaddy, 108, died Aug. 18, 2007. A funeral service was held Aug. 21, 2007 at West Deep Creek Baptist Church in Wadesboro, N.C. with burial at Long Pine Church cemetery in Peachland, N.C.
Gaddy, born in Anson County, N.C., was a son of the late Dave and Nancy Huntley Gaddy. He attended Anson County public schools and was a farmer. He was a member of Long Pine Baptist Church in Peachland, N.C. and Deep Creek Lodge #382.
He was preceded in death by wife Everlener Howard; nine children; 7 sisters and 3 brothers.
Surviving are sons Armon (Ellen) Gaddy, of Charlotte, N.C., Bishop William (Lorraine) Gaddy, of Kansas City, Miss., the Rev. B.C. Gaddy, of Lexington, N.C., and Clayton Gaddy, of Charlotte, N.C.; daughters Evelyn Lockman, of Wilmington, Del., Julia (B.J.) Wall, of Lexington, N.C., Shirley (Bobby) Bittle, of Cheraw, S.C., Elizabeth “Juanita” Gaddy, of Charlotte, N.C., and Mamie Cash, of Morven, N.C.; 60 grandchildren, 97 great grandchildren, and 59 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Amos Junior Gainey
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Amos Junior Gainey, 81, died Aug. 11, 2007. A funeral services was held Aug. 18, 2007 at Davidson Grove Baptist Church, Chesterfield with burial in the church cemetery.
Gainey, born in Chesterfield, was a son of the late James and Nethel Gainey. He was educated in the public schools of Chesterfield before relocating to Charlotte, N.C. Amos built his own business, Gainey Installation, in the 1970s.
Surviving are children Amos Lee Thomas (Lynne) Gainey, of Charlotte, N.C., Carolyn (William) Ballard, of South Orange, N.J., Dale Gainey, of Naples, Fla., and Nita(Errol) Smith, of Naples, Fla.; grandchildren Devin, Dominique, Alexander, Alexis, Ashley, Gerald, and Sharme; brothers, James, Ralph, Robert Lee, Leon (Shirley), and Troy; sisters Ethel Nicholson, Virginia Gainey, Doristeen (Eddie) Grant, Nova (John) Ervin, and Linda Reid; special friends Perri “Raine” Thompson and Lois “BayBay” Mitchell, and a host of other nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.

The Rev. Cecil Jordan
JEFFERSON – The Rev. Cecil Jordan, 69, died Aug. 23, 2007. A funeral service was held Aug. 26 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Jordan, born in Jefferson, was a son of the late Jack and Rosa Lee Mills Jordan. He was a retired textile employee and a Baptist Minister. He was a member and former pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving is wife of 50 years, Frances Perdue Jordan; brother Frank Jordan, of Kershaw, S.C.; sister Annie Mae Gainey, of Lancaster, S.C; also a number of nieces and nephews.

Bobby Carroll ‘Collie’ Melton
JEFFERSON— Bobby Carroll “Collie” Melton, 76, died Aug. 19, 2007. A funeral service was held Aug. 22 at Bethel Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Melton, born in Jefferson, was the son of the late Richard Leroy and Pinkey Robertson Melton. He was a retired employee of Springs Industries and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Maxie and Floyd Melton.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years Ruth Lear Melton; daughter Dr. Rita Ann Melton, of Spartanburg, S.C.; brother Johnny Reece Melton, of Jefferson; sisters Rosie Eubanks, Azilee Taylor, and Lucille Rollins, all of Jefferson, Ruth Boone, of Lancaster, and Gertrude Belk, of Kannapolis, N.C.; sister-in-law, Janie Melton, of Lancaster, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Aster Miller
JEFFERSON— Aster Miller, 90, died Aug. 19, 2007 at the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Monroe in Monroe, N.C.. A funeral service was held Aug. 22, at Hopewell United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Miller, born in Jefferson, was a son of the late Robert Dexter and Roxeanna Blakeney Miller. He was a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church. He retired from the Mungo Construction Company and many years of landscaping.
He was preceded in death by wife Eldred Miller.
Surviving are children Mary Clark (James), of Roxboro, N.C., Mildred M. Blakeney, of Pageland, Bishop Allen Jeffery (Nancy) Miller, of Pageland, Minerva A. (Leroy) Jackson, of Charlotte, N.C., Anthony L. Miller, of Pageland, and Margaret F. (Johnny) Price, of Pageland; brother, the Rev. John Calvin Miller, of Blacksburg, S.C.; sister-in-law Isabelle Miller of Monroe, N.C.; 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
