Sarah Jane Poston Faile
KERSHAW— Sarah Jane Poston Faile, 55, died April 5, 2008 at Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville. Funeral services were held April 9 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
Faile was the daughter of the late Willie Robert Jim and Martha Jane Mangum Poston. Faile was the owner of E-Z Quick Mart on Highway 151 in the Angelus Community and a homemaker. She was also a devoted member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where she was a faithful Sunday school member and past Sunday school teacher and church training union teacher.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Roland Truesdale.
Surviving are her husband, James Allen Faile of the home; two children, Randal Faile and his wife Jennifer of Kershaw, Melissa Phillips and her husband Michael of Kingstree; three sisters, Kate Burris of Lancaster, Sandra Williams of Kershaw, Judy Talbert of Kershaw; two brothers, Richard Truesdale of Lancaster, Curtis Truesdale of Summerville, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Jimmy Lee ‘Doc’ Gregory
RUBY — Jimmy Lee “Doc” Gregory, 58, died April 4, 2008. A funeral service was held April 8, 2008 at the Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Hartsville, S.C. with burial in the Church Cemetery.
Gregory, born in Hartsville, a son of the late Alford and Sally Hicks Gregory. He was a drywall contractor. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Jimmy was married to the late Joyce Elaine Gainey Gregory, and was also preceded in death by brothers, Billy and Kenneth Gregory and by sisters, Annette Watford, and Vera Peach.
Surviving are: daughter, Stacey Gregory (Adam) Catoe of Jefferson; brothers, Tommy Gregory of Chesterfield and Randell Gregory of McBee.

John Thomas Gaskins
CHESTERFIELD — John Thomas Gaskins, 92, died April 5, 2008. A funeral service was held April 8, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Gaskins, born in Chesterfield, a son of the late William H. “Bill” and Mittie Sellers Gaskins. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Oakland Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, William Ervin “Buster” Gaskins.
Surviving are: wife of 60 years, Lois Turner Gaskins of the home; son, Thomas (Barbara) Gaskins of Pleasant Garden, N.C.; daughters, Patricia “Sue” (Steve) Young of Pleasant Garden, N.C., Faith Webb of Chesterfield, and Dianne (Ronnie) Sellers of Darlington, S.C.; daughter-in-law, Susan R. JEFFERSON — Terry Fields McClain, 59, died April 10, 2008. Services have not yet been announced.
Born in Orangeburg, S.C., McLain was a daughter of the late Ergenia Robinson Gleaton and John Andrew and Melba Hightower Fields. She was a homemaker.

CHESTERFIELD - Oscar “Bud” Owens Jr., 66, died April 9, 2008 at his home. A funeral service was held April 12, 2008 at Ruby Church of God with burial in the Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery.
Owens, born in Darlington, S.C. a son of Oscar Owens and the late Lillie Mae Windham Owens. He was a retired pipe fitter with C & C Boilers. Owens was a member of Ruby Church of God. Bud was an avid hunter.

B.D. Phelps
CHERAW —B.D. Phelps, 86, died April 10, 2008. Services were held April 13 at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, with burial in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Born in Supply, N.C. Phelps was a son of the late Robert Lemuel and Janie Simmons Phelps. He was the widower of Rosalie Clemmons Phelps. He was a member of Civil Conservation Corps. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. Phelps was retired from Becker County Sand and Gravel Company (50+ years) having served as Vice President. He was an avid fisherman, so much so, that he keep meticulous records of his prize catches. He was quite the intellectual and wordsmith, ever entwined in a crossword puzzle or delivering a pun. He enjoyed music (blue grass) being able to play by ear. Mr. Phelps love to garden and make wine with his grapes. He was known to be the cook for many celebratory events at work and with friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents listed above, a daughter, Martha E. Phelps and brothers, Homer Phelps, Albert Phelps, Audie Phelps, Coolidge Phelps, and Harley Phelps.

Ruby May Talbert Davidson
CHESTERFIELD — Ruby May Talbert Davidson, age 91, died April 4, 2008. Services were held April 7 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, with interment at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Davidson was born April 21, 1916, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Frank and Nicey Gainey Talbert. She was a retired seamstress and a homemaker. Ruby was married to the late William Robert Davidson, and was also preceded in death by her 2 daughters, Julia Rae D. Wilks and Bobbie D. Horne, and by her 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
She is survived by stepdaughter Shirley D.”Toonie” Mescher of Greensboro, N.C., nine grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren,

Charles Robert Deese
Kannapolis, N.C. — Charles Robert Deese, age 69, died March 29, 2008. Services were held March 31 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield. Interment followed at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Pageland.
Deese was born March 15, 1939, in Bennettsville, S.C. the son of Katie Elizabeth Hancock Deese and the late Cleve John Deese. He was a former employee of Pillowtex and K-Mart.
He is survived by mother Katie Hancock Deese of Kannapolis N.C., sister Patsy Elaine Deese of Kannapolis N.C., and his loving bird “Pepper.”

Dian Wallace Gibson
LANCASTER - Dian Wallace Gibson, 59, died March 29, 2008 at her home. A funeral service was held April 1, at Liberty Free Will Baptist Church with burial in the Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Monroe.
She was born June 3, 1948 in Fort Mill, a daughter of the late Carl Wallace and Mary Elizabeth Boone Wallace. She attended Canaan Free Will Baptist Church and had been the cafeteria supervisor at Southside School.
Surviving are her husband, Jimmy Gibson; daughters, Crystal Hall of Lancaster and Robin (Randy) McClain of Indian Trail; sister, Elaine Melton of Monroe; five grandchildren, Casey Edwards, Corey Edwards, Cheyenne Hall, Hollie LaFlame and Kendra McClain; and a great grandchild, Lily LaFlame.

Joseph Randel ‘Joe’ Rollins
CHERAW - Joseph Randel “Joe” Rollins, 23, died March 27, 2008. A funeral service was held March 31, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Patrick Cemetery.
Rollins, born in Cheraw, a son of George and Lois Rollins. He was a 2004 graduate of Cheraw High School and was an employee of Constar Industries. Mr. Rollins was a member of Southern Grace Full Gospel Church. Joe enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his friends, especially four-wheelin’, mud bogging, and playing golf. He was an avid Clemson fan. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, J.B. Rollins.

Shaw born in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Tom and Bessie Vaughn Curtis and step-mother, Becky Kirkley Curtis. She was a former employee of Chesterfield County DSS and a retired employee of Tri-County Mental Health. Mrs. Shaw was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church where she was a former choir member for many years. Alice was preceded in death by a son, Bob Shaw; two grandchildren, Benjamin Shaw and Rebekah Crawley; and by a son-in-law, Kenny Crawley.

Helen Haithcock Sikes
PAGELAND — Helen Haithcock Sikes, 70, died April 4, 2008. Services were held April 7 at Providence Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery.
Sikes was born December 28, 1937 in Pageland, a daughter of Virginia Vaughn Haithcock and the late Charlie Haithcock. She was a retired secretary with Culp Weaving and was a former secretary with SLS Corp. Mrs. Sikes was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and a member of the Praise Team. Helen was married to the late Eli Sikes and was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Nadel.
She is survivied by daughters Lisa (David) Gardner of Pageland, S.C. and Kimberly Plyler and fiancé Craig Wetzel of Waxhaw, N.C., mother Virginia Haithcock of Pageland, brother Eddie (Margaret) Haithcock of Hilton Head, S.C., sisters: Bonnie Jordan and Tillie (Bert) Jackson of Pageland, and Wanda Goodall of Charlotte, N.C., grandchildren: Candice (Justin) Seaverns and Nathan Gardner, great-grandchildren Caitlyn Seaverns and Alexis Ross, and special loved one Ray Deese of Pageland.

HARTSVILLE— Catherine Johnson Sparrow, 86, widow of Marion T. Sparrow, died April 2, 2008. Services were held April 5 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, with interment in Westview Memorial Cemetery.
Sparrow was born in Jefferson, a daughter of the late Raymond A. and Mary Parnell Johnson. She was retired from Hartsville Manufacturing and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Greensboro, N.C. — Sandra “Sandi” Curtis Squires, 59, died March 27, 2008. Services were held March 29 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in David’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield.
Squires was born in Greensboro, N.C. a daughter of the late Gary Franklin and Rebecca Eddins Curtis. She was a homemaker. Sandi was married to the late Boyd Baxter “Skip” Squires, Jr. and was also preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Curtis Mann.
She is survived by son Jason Squires and his fiancĂ©e Courtney Flinchum, of Greensboro, N.C., brothers: G.W. “Sam” (Maxine) Curtis of Greensboro, N.C. and Billy Ray Curtis of Chesterfield, sisters Patricia Gordon of Randleman, N.C. and Cheryl Curtis Gleason of Chesterfield, S.C., and a host of nieces and nephews.

Harry Walker Weede
Laurinburg, N.C. — Harry Walker Weede, Sr., 94, died March 28, 2008, at Scotia Village, Laurinburg, N.C., where he has been a resident for nearly three years. Services were held March 31 at First Baptist Church in Cheraw, with interment following in Old St. David’s Cemetery.
Born December 17, 1913, in Plymouth, Washington County, N.C., Mr. Weede was a son of the late Lewis Tilden Weede and Roxanna Respass Weede. Educated in the public schools of Plymouth, he later managed a variety store in Scotland Neck, N.C., where he met his wife-to-be, Kate Conn Covington, then a teacher in the public schools of Scotland Neck.
Mr. and Mrs. Weede were married in 1938, the first couple to be married in the new sanctuary of Cheraw First Baptist Church. He was a member of that Church for almost 60 years and had served as a deacon.
In 1939 Mr. Weede joined the Colgate Palmolive Company as a traveling sales representative and later as district sales supervisor in an area consisting of portions of Virginia and North Carolina. Later in 1945 he accepted a position with the Allison-Erwin Company, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., as an area sales manager. Mr. Weede continued with Allison-Erwin until his retirement in Cheraw, S.C., in 1975.
Weede was an ardent follower and supporter of athletics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was a 25-year member of the Rams Club, and until recently, a season-ticket-holder who rarely missed a football game.
Weede was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 59 years, a native of Cheraw. Survivors include his children Katherine Weede Griggs of Cheraw, Harry Walker Weede, Jr., of Chapel Hill, N.C., Sally Weede Kingsley of Atlanta, GA, and William Lewis Weede of Greenville, S.C., ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Wendell Fair
RUBY—Wendell Fair died March 18, 2008 at the McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C. Funeral services were held Mar. 21 at Flemming Funeral Home Chapel in Chesterfield. He was the son of Daisy Lee Fair and the late Edward Eugene Fair. He attended the Chesterfield County public school system. Surviving are his mother, Daisy Lee Fair of Cheraw; wife, Patricia Fair of Ruby; a daughter, Patrice Fair of Ruby; four sons, Phillip Fair, Wendell Fair, Bradley Fair and Quincy Fair all of Ruby; sister, Wanda (Paul) Amos of Aston, Va.; four brothers, Henry (Gladys) Fair of Ruby, Jerry (Jennie) Fair of Marietta, Ga., Odell (Diane) Fair of Camden, and James (Dalphine) Fair of Mt. Charles Ray Funderburk
PAGELAND— Charles Ray Funderburk, 58, died at Carolina’s Medical Center-Union. A Funeral service was held Mar. 21 at the Flemming Funeral Home Chapel in Pageland. He was the son of Doretha and Allen Funderburk. He was educated in the Chesterfield County public schools and attended Cleveland Community College in Shelby, N.C. where he received his certificate in welding. He was employed by Brooks Fields in Monroe and worked there until his illness. Bro. Charles joined Piney Grove A.M.E. Zion Church in Mount Croghan in 2001. In 2002 he was called into the ministry. He did his trial sermon in July 2004. He was an Assistant to the Pastor and also served in social concerns, prison ministry, adult Sunday school teacher, Christian education director, ACE president, class leader #5, and vice-president of evangelism. He was in his third year of conference study. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters: Rosa Von Seegars Shands and Linda Sue Funderburk.
Surviving are wife Robin McBride Funderburk; a daughter, Shamiya Blakeney of Pageland; stepsons, Anthony (Voneisa) McBride of Aiken, S.C.; Daniel McBride of Pageland, and Chavis Jordan of Bishopville; stepdaughters, Annisha Jordan of Charlotte, N.C. and Sherika Jordan of Pageland; eight step-grandchildren; brothers, Elliot (Debra) Funderburk and Heyward (Audrey) Funderburk both of Pageland and Stanley Funderburk of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Bonnie (Eustace) Moore, Deborah Funderburk Holland, and Shelby (Robert) Sowell all of Pageland; an aunt, Ollie Mae Massey of Pageland; two uncles, Leroy Blakeney and Kelly Blakeney both of Charlotte; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

RUBY — Eloise Sellers Jenkins, 80, died Saturday, March 22, 2008. A funeral service was held March 25, 2008 at Ruby Baptist Church with burial in the Ruby Cemetery.
Jenkins was born in Ruby, S.C. a daughter of the late William Clyde Sellers, Sr. and Nora Jane Hancock Sellers. She was a graduate of Ruby High School and Limestone College. Jenkins was a retired Chesterfield County School Teacher with 38 years of service. She was a lifelong member of Ruby Baptist Church. Eloise was married to the late Jesse Thomas Jenkins and was also preceded in death by a brother, William Clyde Sellers, Jr. and by her sister, Mary Lee Parker.
Surviving are: son, Tommy (Gail) Jenkins of Florence, S.C.; daughter, Betty Ann (Billy) Davis of Ruby; brothers, James Grady Sellers of Pageland and Charles W. Sellers of Ruby; three grandchildren, Whitney Jenkins, Kevin Jenkins, and Melanie Davis.

Brent Lee Ratliff
RUBY — Brent Lee Ratliff, 29, a funeral service was held March 17, 2008 at Clanton Plains Baptist Church
Ratliff was born in Cheraw, S.C. a son of Billy Gene Ratliff and the late Brenda Sue Tucker Farmer. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and attended Francis Marion University. Brent was a member of Clanton Plains Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother and brother, Billy Gene Ratliff, Jr.
Surviving are: father and stepmother, Billy and Vickie Ratliff of Ruby; stepbrother, Johnny (Lydia) Hartwick of Ruby; niece, Sierra Hartwick; nephew, Zachary Hartwick; also five Aunts, three Uncles, and numerous cousins, and special companion “his dog Lacy”.

CHERAW — May Belle Wilkes Teal, 83, died Saturday, March 22, 2008. A funeral service was held March 25, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Westfield Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Teal was born in Patrick, S.C. a daughter of the late James Walter and Vera Catherine Oakley Wilkes. She was a retired employee of Allied Department Stores and a member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church. May Belle was married to the late Ben Teal, and was also preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Teal, and by her brother, James Wilkes.
Surviving are: son, Billy Teal of Wallace; daughter, Linda (Bobby) Ammons of Cheraw; also, five Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren.

Ruth Sellers Wannamaker
WHITE ROCK, S.C. - Ruth Sellers Wannamaker, 91, died March 22, 2008. A funeral service was held March 24, 2008 at Hopewell Baptist Church in Chesterfield, S.C. with burial in the church cemetery.
Wannamaker, born in Chesterfield County to Thomas Sinclair and Cora Oliver Sellers, she was one of 14 children who lived past infancy. Ruth was a beautiful lady, who was a talented seamstress, enjoyed gardening, was an excellent cook, and loved to help others. She spent most of her life in Hartsville, S.C. and was a longtime member of West Hartsville Baptist Church. Most recently she was a resident of the Lowman Home in White Rock, S.C..She was predeceased by brothers, Lloyd, Jim, Charles, Bert Lee, Ed and Lin Sellers, and sister, Mary Huntley.

Helen McKenzie Burr
CHESTERFIELD — Helen McKenzie Burr, 81, died March 13, 2008. A funeral service was held March 15, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Burr was born in Bennettsville, S.C., a daughter of the late Oliver Cleveland and Florence Parker McKenzie. She was a graduate of Robert Fletcher Memorial High School and was a retired seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband James Murray Burr and a grandson James William Eddins.
Surviving are: daughter, Mary Alice Burr of Clio, S.C.; grandchildren, Teresa (Richard) Preston of Clio, S.C. and Danny (Deanna) Eddins of Chesterfield, S.C.; brother, Douglas (Lena) McKenzie of Bennettsville, S.C.
one sister, Eva M. (A.T.) Langley of New Bern, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Danna and Brandon Eddins, and Bradley Graham.

JEFFERSON—Ben Carson Graves, 77, died Sun., Mar. 16, 2008. A funeral service was held Mar. 19 at Sutton Funeral Home Chapel with interment following at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
He was born May 16, 1930 in Pageland, S.C. to Ben and Lillie Atkinson. He was retired from the DuPont Company in Camden, S.C. He passed away at the Home Place Assisted Living in Eastman, Ga. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Graves (Oliver) of Jefferson; son, Ben Ronnie Graves of Milan, Ga.; sisters, Clarice Hood of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mary Hathaway of Pageland, S.C.; grandchildren, Meredith Pitts (Christian), Leah Mitchell (Jeff), Elizabeth Graves; great grandson, Jackson W. Pitts.

Bobbie Jean Lewis Johnson
CHESTERFIELD - Bobbie Jean Lewis Johnson, 72, died March 18, 2008 at her home. a funeral service was held March 20, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Johnson, born in Chesterfield a daughter of the late James Isaac and Pansy Aline Davidson Lewis. She was a retired inspector with Highland Industries with 42 years of service. Johnson was a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church. She was married for 45 years to the late Fletcher J. Johnson, Jr. and was also preceded in death by son, Dr. Jimmy Johnson, brothers, Wilson, Tommy, William, and Bonnie Lewis, and by sisters, Mary Lee Gulledge and Martha Stafford.
Surviving are: son, Charles (Hannah) Johnson of Chesterfield; daughter, Cynthia (Johnny) Davidson of Chesterfield; sister, Allie Mae Stafford of Chesterfield; grandchildren, Chad (Kristy) Davidson, Lauren (James) Griggs, Kyle (Tiffany) Davidson, Ryan Johnson and Anna Johnson; great-grandchildren: Emma Grace Davidson and Jayden Davidson.

Lear was born in Greenville, S.C. a daughter of the late Minnie Turner. She was a retired textile employee. Lou was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.

Wilton B. ‘Mack’ Mackall
FLORIDA - Wilton B. “Mack” Mackall, 88, died March 15, 2008. A grave-side service was held March 21, at Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Mackall was born in Crafton, PA. He attended schools in Pittsburgh, PA. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II from 1942 to 1945; later, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Mackall started working for the State of Fla. Veterans Affairs in 1946, and rose to serve in 2 Governors’ Cabinets as Fla. State Director of Veterans Affairs. After retiring from State government, he thereafter served as Special Assistant to the Director of the VA Medical Center-Bay Pines, Fla.. Mackall was a 60-year member of the VFW, and a Life Member of both the American Legion and also the Disabled American Veterans. He was Past President of the National Veterans Service Officers’ Association of America.
Surviving are: wife of 48 years, Julia Davis Mackall of the home; sister-in-law; brothers-in-law; and by nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Coble Russell
POLKTON, N.C.—Dorothy Coble Russell, 95, died Mar. 16, 2008 at the Brian Center in Monroe. A funeral service was held Mar. 18 at the Chapel of Morgan and Son Funeral Home with burial following in the Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Russell, born in Randolph County a daughter of the late John and Vandelia Coble. She was widowed by her husband Edgar Earl Russell. Russell delighted in caring and cooking for her family and friends. The grandchildren have wonderful memories of her fried potatoes, fried apple pies, and hot butter and sugar biscuits. She enjoyed quilting with her twin sister Arve for many years. She and her late husband shared the bounty of their vegetable garden, which they enjoyed with their friends and family.
