Brenda Abernathy Autry
PAGELAND - Brenda Abernathy Autry, 65, died March 9, 2008. A funeral service was held March 12, 2008 at Rose Memorial Church of the Nazarene with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Autry born in China Grove, NC a daughter of Margaret Abernathy Suggs and the late Olin Gordon. Brenda was raised by her grandparents Fred and Annie Abernathy. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are: sons Timmy (Christine) Autry of Johnsville, KY and Michael Autry of Batavia, OH; daughters Saundra (Richard) Price of Jefferson, Lisa Morgan of Hendersonville, NC, and Paula (Bobby) Outen of Wilmington, OH; mother, Margaret A. Suggs of Clover, SC; sisters, Connie Fitch of Jefferson, SC, Lucille Kirkland of Clover, SC, and Sherrie Gordon of Concord, NC; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Howard W. Boan Sr.
CHERAW - Howard W. Boan Sr., 86, died March 13, 2008. A funeral service was held March 16, 2008 at Westside Baptist Church with burial in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Boan born in Cheraw, SC a son of the late Ira Walker Boan, Sr. and Mattie Lou Board Boan. He was a graduate of Cheraw High School and a retired sales manager with American Bakeries. Boan was a lifelong, faithful, member of Westside Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and member of the American Legion Post 74.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Sarah Phillips Boan, his brothers, Ira W. Boan, Jr. and Paul J. Boan, and by a sister, Edell Boan Polson.
Surviving are: son, H. Walker (Mary) Boan of Inman, SC; daughter, Diane (James B.)Boan-Donaldson of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Beth (Jimmy) Boan O’Neal of Cheraw, James Walker Donaldson of Chapel Hill, NC; great- grandchildren: Richard, Alex, and Jacob Evans of Cheraw; sister, Mary Lou Boan (Bill) Jacobs of Cheraw; sisters-in-law: Dorothy P. Zearfoss and Edith P.( Fay) Martin and of Chesterfield.

Atwater Huntley
PAGELAND—Atwater Huntley, 76, died March 3, 2008. Funeral services were held March 8 at King’s Funeral Home Chapel in Pageland. He was the son of James and Ola Huntley. He was known as “Ug” to family and friends. Juanita mistook “Ug” for Earl, but learning of the mistake she continued to prefer Earl as her term of endearment. To this day, he is known by “Earl” to his Easterling family. Atwater spent most of his life in Pageland as a farmer. He did however serve his country in the Korean War. In later years, he was employed by Pageland Screen Printers from where he retired. Though farming continued to be his passion, he prided himself in some of the juiciest sweetest watermelons around. If you knew Atwater, you knew that he loved to talk and talk and talk… It was not uncommon to say multiple goodbyes before parting ways. His kind heart, insightful ways, keen wit, and old sayings will be missed by all. If he loved you, you knew it; if he could help you, he would.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lillian Johnson, and his brothers Ivory, Hattye, and Walter Huntley. Surviving are: wife, Juanita Easterling Huntley; his children, Angela Lucas (Owen), Gregory Huntley, Veronica PoPo (Felix), and Gerald Huntley; his sister, Muriel Johnson; his brothers, Dillon Huntley, James Huntley (Johnsie), and Douglas Huntley; four grandchildren, Marquese and Trenikia Mitchell and DeAnna and Owen “Trey” Lucas, III; two great-grandchildren; a special niece, Sherby Blakeney; two special sisters-in-law, Jessie Conrad and Catherine Huntley; brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

Berniece K. ‘Bea’ King
CHESTERFIELD - Berniece K. “Bea” King, 97, died March 9, 2008. A funeral service was held March 11, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
King born in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Henry Frank and Mary Etta “Mollie” Knight King. She was a graduate of Roper Hospital School of Nursing in Charleston, SC, and received her certification in Public Health Nursing from Georgia Peabody College. She also completed additional courses at the University of North Carolina and at Furman University. Bea retired in 1974 from Greenville County Health Department as coordinating nurse in Home Health Services after 24 years of service.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Foster King, sisters, Lela K. Carr and Vivian K. Adams, and by a dear friend Peggy Davis.
Surviving are: brother Frank King of Salisbury, NC; sisters, Sue Lee Harmon of Chesterfield, SC, Julia (Bill) Hunter of Charlotte, NC, Helen (Dr. Jerry) Perry, and Johnnie Long of Chesterfield, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Vernon Lewis
HARTSVILLE - The Rev. Vernon Lewis, 63, died March 9, 2008. A funeral service was held March 12, 2008 at Pine View Baptist Church, Chesterfield, with burial in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Hartsville.
Rev. Lewis born in Hartsville, a son of the late Maxie Brooks and Ruth Isgett Lewis. He was a graduate of Galilee Bible Institution with a degree in Theology, and was a Baptist Minister and Building Contractor. Rev. Lewis was former pastor of Pine View Baptist Church and New Hope Baptist Church, and served as interim pastor of Brown Springs, Mt. Olivet, and Piney Plains Baptist Churches. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.
Rev. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, James “Pete” Lewis, and Jerry “John” Lewis and by his sister, Valerie “Ann” Dixon.
Surviving are: wife Shirley Lambert Lewis of the home; son, Lawrence V. “Larry” Lewis, Jr. of Hartsville, and his fiancĂ© Kimberly Dawn Smith; daughter, Shirley Elaine (Steve) Riley of Hartsville; son-in-law, Pete Starling of Patrick; brother, Rev. William (Cheryl) Lewis of Hartsville; five grandchildren Trey, Emily, and Brooke Starling, and Justin & Blake Riley.

Elizabeth Hill ‘Lib’ Maloch
CHESTERFIELD - Elizabeth Hill “Lib” Maloch, 84, died March 11, 2008. A funeral service was held March 14, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Black Creek Cemetery, Dovesville, SC.
Maloch born in Darlington County, SC a daughter of the late James Wilcox Hill and Louise Jackson Hill. She was a retired Library Assistant with the Chesterfield County Library and a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Lib was married to the late John B. “Jake” Maloch and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Maloch and by her three brothers, Jack, Edward, and Son Hill.
Surviving are: son, John (Mary) Maloch, Jr. of Cheraw;
Daughters, Linda M. (Tommy) Fowler of Charleston, SC and Mary M. Bell of Charlotte, NC;
eight grandchildren, Sharon Fowler, Leigh (Jay) Philon, Gregory Sellers, Jennifer (Chris) Chisam, Kimberly Bell, John (Christina) Maloch, III, Amber Maloch, and Holly Malcoh; seven great-grandchildren, Kali Daniels, Jake Philon, Karre Sellers, Lathan Sellers, Madison Chisam, Courtney Chisam, and Ashlyn Maloch.

Lloyd Merriman
CHERAW – Lloyd Merriman, 85, died March 6, 2008. A funeral service was held March 11, 2008 at Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church where he was a member.
Merriman, born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Leon and Leanna Streater Merriman. He was a multi-talented individual who was self taught and multi-disciplined at many trades. This led him to be dedicated employee of Calvin Rivers Farms and self employed as an auto mechanic. As a very respected and sociable man, he had an extensive circle of friends. He was a principled and outspoken individual and he embodied a very vibrant classy spirit. No one who ever met him could forget him.
He was preceded in death by wife, Ada Mae Nivens Merriman and siblings, Floyd Merriman, Willies Merriman, Burlin Merriman, Donetta Leak and Mary Pegues.
Surviving are: sons, Jerome (Dorothy) Merriman of Morven, NC, Tyrone (Gladys) Merriman of Cheraw, and Timothy (Sharon) Merriman of High Point; daughters, Mary C. McCoy of Chesterfield, Alice L. Chapman of Washington, DC, Sondra Sowell, Jacquelyn Myers, Elaine L. (Lee Prentis) Sowell, Ada L. (Charles) Ashe, all of Cheraw, Mary J. (Rev. Charles) Sturdivant of Morven, NC and Genenie M. Johnson of Charlotte, 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; brother, Royce Lee Merriman of Cheraw; sisters, Roseanna Hillian, Moletha Roberts and Alice Arteal Merriman, all of Cheraw; brother-in-law, Rufus “Son” Nivens of Cheraw; sister-in-laws, Betty Merriman, Mary Helen Merriman and Mary Alma Davis all of Cheraw; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Rosa Woodward Wise
RUBY - Rosa Woodward Wise, 90, died March 12, 2008. A funeral service was held March 15, 2008 at Fairview Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Wise, born in Ruby, a daughter of the late Joseph Hebron Woodward and Mary Elizabeth Steen Woodward. She moved to Kannapolis, NC as a young girl and after the start of WWII, she and her lifelong friend ‘Merle” Overcash went to Bridgeport, Conn., where they became original “Rosie the Rivioters” by working in a shipyard. She eventually returned to the Carolinas where she married Mr. Roscoe Wise. Before returning to Ruby, they settled in Kannapolis, NC for a short time where they both worked in the cotton mills. After relocating back to Ruby, SC Mrs. Rosa eventually became a homemaker and caretaker for the elderly and sick. She did this for many years. Rosa was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Grace W. Williams and Sarah W. Baker.
Surviving are: daughter, Paula Lynn Wise of Ruby; stepson, Charles Lynn Wise of Lexington, NC; brother, Eugene “Gene” (Lona Mae) Woodward of Ruby, sisters, Cora Bell Grass of Kannapolis, NC and Beatrice Oliver of Ruby;

Robert Darree Davis
CHESTERFIELD - Robert Darree Davis, 71, died, Feb. 26, 2008, at his home.
A funeral service was held Feb. 29, 2008 at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church with burial in the Church Cemetery.
Davis born, in Morven, NC, a son of the late Ruben Nathan and Effie Jane White Davis. He was a former department manager with 38 years of service at Chesterfield Webbing and was a retired employee of Delta Mills with 10 years of service. Davis was a member of the WOW Lodge 516 and a member of the Sandy Plains United Methodist Church.
He was also preceded in death by brothers, Lonnie, Roy, Tyler, C.E., Francis, and Charles Davis and by sisters, Margaret D. Goodale, Madge D. Rogers, and Naomi D. Westberry.
Surviving are: wife of 50 years, Mildred Lee Davis of the home; son, Richard D. “Ricky” Davis; daughters, Teresa D. (Larry) Smith and Tammy D. (Robert) Adams all of Chesterfield; six grandchildren, Rick and Chase Davis, Brittany and Joshua Adams, Emily and Ethan Smith; sister: Mary D. Goodale of Chesterfield, SC; two special sons, Jimmy Sikes of Chesterfield and Jeffery Flowers of Maiden, NC.

CHERAW - Lula Mae Quick Polson, age 78, died , Feb. 23, 2008, at her home. A funeral service was held Feb. 25, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.
Polson born, in Cheraw, SC, a daughter of the late Monroe and Lula Hewitt Quick. She was a retired Cheraw Elementary School employee. Polson was a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church. Lula Mae was married to the late Lonnie H. Polson.
Surviving are: daughters, Mary (Jimmy) Higgins of Hampstead, NC; Janice Rivers of Asheboro, NC; Shirley (Ralph) Grant and Lisa H. Polson both of Cheraw, SC; Stepson: Wayne H. (Cheryl) Polson of Sandy Springs, SC;brother: Tillman Quick of Patrick, SC; also seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren

Joseph ‘Howdy’ Sullivan
JEFFERSON - Joseph “Howdy” Sullivan, 43, died Feb. 26, 2008 at his home. A funeral service will be held at a later date.
Sullivan born, in Rahway, NJ a son of the late John Francis and Jean Teffenhart Sullivan. He was a retired shipping supervisor with Paxar Corporation in Rock Hill, SC. Joseph was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Marie Sullivan and a brother, Johnny Sullivan.
Surviving are: wife, Kathleen Breyan Sullivan of the home; daughter, Joanna Francise Sullivan of Jefferson; step son, Shawn Ebel of Jefferson, brothers, William Groves of New Jersey, and Gary Groves of Florida; sister, Clara Coman of Nevada.

Charles A. ‘Charlie’ Teal
CHESTERFIELD - Charles A. “Charlie” Teal, age 77, died Feb. 24, 2008
A funeral service was held, Feb. 28, 2008 at Bethesda United Methodist Church with burial at Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Teal born in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Locke and Mary Etta Teal. He was a retired carpenter and construction worker, and a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Teal and by a sister Sarah T. Ackerman
Surviving are: brothers, Locke Junior Teal of Fort Mill, SC and Riley D. (Jeanette) Teal of Williston, SC; sister Peggy T. (Fred) Simmons of Fairfax, VA; also a number of Nieces and Nephews

Thomas Dewitt Belk Jr
PAGELAND—Thomas Dewitt Belk Jr., 59, died Fri. Feb. 15, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center-Union. He was born in Chesterfield County, SC, son of the late Thomas and Ada Jordan Belk. He is survived by his wife, Monika Belk of Pageland; two sons, Charles Thomas Belk of Pageland and Travis Randolph of Betteville, PA; and daughter, Melissa Cox of Jefferson, SC; four brothers, J.B. Belk of Pageland, Donny Belk of Mt. Croghan, Ricky Belk and Charles Allen Belk of Pageland; and two sisters, Vickie Rollings of Pageland and Ellen Dimmick of Matthews, N.C., and three grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Jean Campbell. A funeral service was held Feb. 17 at Oak Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Sutton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Elgego Lockhart King
JEFFERSON—Elgego Lockhart King, 95, died Feb. 14, 2008. Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at Hopewell Baptist Church in McBee, S.C. She was born December 27, 1912 as the daughter of the late Jim and Minnie Blakeney Lockhart in Chesterfield County, S.C. At an early age, she dedicated her life to God and became an active member at Oro United Methodist Church in Pageland. On March 1, 1929 she was united in marriage to the late Bill King and to this union two children were born. In 1980 King moved to Washington, DC to live with her daughter. While living in Washington, DC, she joined Springfield Baptist Church. She was also very active at the Modern City Dwelling Center and went everyday until she became very ill. King was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Community Chapter #205 in McBee, S.C. and joined the Queen of Sheba Chapter #2 while living in the District of Columbia. Surviving her are a daughter, Mary Frances Blakeney of Washington, D.C.; a son, Billy King of Mitchellville, M.D.; an adopted daughter, Peggy Alsbrook of Monroe, N.C.; a granddaughter, Zelda of Bowie, M.D.; a grandson, Ricky of Washington, D.C.; a granddaughter-in-law, Yvette of Fayetteville, N.C.; a great granddaughter, Kristyn and a great grandson, Graham both of Fayetteville, N.C.; three sisters, Vera Sowell of Philadelphia, P.A., Margaret McGrady and Louise Smothers both of Newark, NJ; one sister-in-law, Sally Brewer of Florence, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Betty Clark Krimminger
CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Betty Clark Krimminger, 76, died Fri. Feb. 22, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy in Charlotte, N.C. She was born April 9, 1931 in Pageland, a daughter of the late Clayton Clark and the late Lula Marze Clark. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis Krimminger, one brother, William Roy Clark, and one sister, Mary Lou Rivers. She attended Pageland High School and lived most of her life in Charlotte, Pageland, and Wingate. Krimminger is survived by one son: Danny Krimminger and wife Judy of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Donna West and husband Ritchie of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Horace Clark and wife Martha of Pageland; two sisters, Effie Parham and husband Bud of Cornelia, Ga., and Ann Smith of Rincon, Ga.; two grandchildren, Graham West of the US Air Force and Garrett West of Charlotte, N.C. Graveside funeral services were held Sun. Feb. 24 in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Caroll Anthony. The family suggests memorials be made to Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church TV Ministries, 1117 South Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203-4292 or to Philadelphia Baptist Church Building Fund, 5709 Philadelphia Church Road, Marshville, N.C. 28103. McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is serving the family of Krimminger.

Jessie James (Jay) Radford
HARTSVILLE, S.C.—Jessie James (Jay) Radford, 59, died Feb. 24, 2008. Services were held at the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with burial in the Beauford Baptist Church Cemetery. Jessie was born in Bennettsville, the son of Mary Jordan Radford and the late Leroy Radford, Sr. He was employed by McLeod Farms. Surviving are wife Betty Jean Garrison Radford, Hartsville; step-daughters, Stacey Locklear and Jill Radford, both from S.C.; brothers, Willie (Frank) Radford and his wife Gracie, Springfield, N.C., Leroy (Dan) Radford, Jr. and his wife Geraldine, Winnsboro; several nieces and nephews; close friends: Tammy Gainey and Brian Horrel, Jr. A brother, Bobby Gene Radford and nephew Carl (Chuckie) Radford preceded him in death.
