William M. ‘Bill’ Burch
CHESTERFIELD— William M. “Bill” Burch, 77, died Jan. 20, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 24 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel.
Burch was born in Wallace, S.C., a son of the late Robert Huntley and Bernice Threadgill Burch. He joined the Army at the end of WWII, and served with the occupation forces in Germany. He was also a Korean War Veteran surviving several heavy engagements. He ultimately retired from the U.S. Army in 1974 as a Sergeant First Class. Burch also served as a Chesterfield Town Council member from 1977 to 1983. He was also a retiree of the Lancaster County School District, serving in a variety of positions. He was a member of Chesterfield American Legion Post 74.
Burch was preceded in death by brothers Robert H. Burch Jr., Frank M. Burch, and Darrell Dominique Burch, and by three sisters, Sarah B. Horton, Betty Lou Burch, and Lillian Burch.
Surviving are wife Teresa McDermott Burch; sons Randell (April) Burch, of Beaufort, S.C. and Bill (Holly) Burch, of Fort Mill, S.C.; grandchildren Camille, Autumn, Tristan, and Abigail Burch; and sister Laura Burch Hunt, of Chesterfield. Gary Evan Douglas Jr.
RUBY — Gary Evan Douglas Jr., 78, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 23 at Chesterfield Baptist Church.
Douglas was born in 1929 in Kingstree, S.C., a son of the late Gary Evan Douglas Sr. and Edith Anderson Douglas. He was a graduate of Furman University and received his Masters degree from the University of South Carolina. Douglas taught for four years at the Hawaiian Baptist Academy, and retired as principal of Ruby Elementary School with 32 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Gary enjoyed music and was a very talented organist, pianist, and composer.
He was preceded in death by brother William K. Douglas.
Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Zada Graham Gulledge Douglas; stepdaughter, Carol Ann Gulledge; feline granddaughter Gracie, who he loved very much; special sister-in-law Amelia Potts Graham, of Fort Mills, S.C., and numerous special cousins.

Kendal Funderburk
PAGELAND — Kendal Funderburk, 17, died Jan. 21, 2008.
Born in Chesterfield County, he was the son of Marlowe and Ann Eubanks Funderburk. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandfather, Darrel Funderburk; brothers Dustin Funderburk, Brian Hicks, and Cory Funderburk, all of Pageland; aunts Debbie Sparlin, of Pageland and Martha Eubanks, of Charlotte, N.C.
Services were held Jan. 24 at First Presbyterian Church with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Calvin Hancock
PAGELAND — Calvin Hancock, 84, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2008.
Born in Chesterfield County, S.C., he was the son of the late Lester and Daisy Jane Rollings Hancock. Surviving are son Calvin, of Pageland; brother Fred Hancock, of Lancaster; sisters Grace Hancock, Kathleen Baker, and Dot Gulledge, of Kannapolis, N.C., Myrtle Jordan, of Mt. Croghan, and Billie Jean Knight, of Pageland.
A funeral service was held Jan. 23 at First Presbyterian Church with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church Development Center.

Carroll Junior Melton
JEFFERSON — Carroll Junior Melton, 58, died Jan. 16, 2008. A memorial service was held Jan. 19 at Bethel Baptist Church.
Born in Mt. Croghan, Melton was a son of Preston and Gladys Jackson Melton. He was a retired forklift operator with Tucker Lumber Company.
Surviving are longtime companion Dot S. Owens, of Camden, S.C.; son Michael (Pam) Melton, of Ruby; daughter Connie (Charles) Hannah, of Chesterfield; sister Doris Melton, of Cheraw; stepsons Randy (Debbie) Cassidy, of Bishopville, S.C., and Darrel (Brenda) Cassidy, of Camden; stepdaughters Tammie (Perry) Johnson, of McBee, and Robin Williams, of Camden; grandchildren Ashley (Chris) Stancil, Kimberly Black, and Samantha Black, and twelve step grandchildren.

Russell Charles Rhode
CHESTERFIELD — Russell Charles Rhode, 79, died Jan. 20, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 23 at Shiloh United Methodist Church with interment following in the church cemetery.
Rhode was born in Jonestown, Pa., and was a son of the late William Peter and Rose Ann Gilbert Rhode. He helped establish Chesterfield Manufacturing Company and retired after 25 years in management. Rhode was an active member of Shiloh United Methodist Church were he was a choir member, a member of the United Methodist Men, and a member of the Men’s Bible Class. Russell was an avid fisherman and enjoyed traveling and camping.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Rhode; infant daughter Annette Rhode; stepson Weldon Rivers; sisters Elsie (Mike) Walker and Alma (Dick) Degler; and brother Arthur (Alma) Rhode.

Billy Ray Sullivan
ROCK HILL — Billy Ray Sullivan, 75, of 123 Alabama Court, died Jan. 23, 2008 at his home.
Funeral services were held Jan. 25 at Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Hatcher officiating and the Rev. William H. Elder assisting. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park on Cherry Road.
A native of Chesterfield County, Sullivan was a son of the late William Columbus Sullivan and the late Millie Edith Kirkley. He was a member of Park Baptist and retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Company and the S.C. National Guard after serving both for 32 years.
He was preceded in death by grandsons James and Kenneth Elder; brothers Clyde, Russell, Finley, Harold, Conley, Zeddie, and Winston Sullivan; and sisters Macie, Gracie, Frankie Sullivan, and Myrtle Matthews.
Sullivan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Lee Miles Sullivan, of the home; sons Donald Ray Sullivan and wife, Michelle, and Timothy Frank Sullivan and wife, Rosemary, all of Rock Hill; daughters Mary Elizabeth Elder and husband, William H. (Buzzy), Patricia (Patti) S. Roach and husband, Drake, all of Rock Hill; brother Howard Sullivan and wife, Fannie, of Rock Hill; his sister, Gertrude Hatcher, of Jefferson; grandchildren Mike Elder and wife, Barrett, Casey Elder, Katie R. Conant and husband, Cliff, Kara Roach, Adam Sullivan, Miles Sullivan, and Reid Sullivan; and great-grandchildren Justin, Andy, Jackson, and Anna Quinn Elder.

Ray Kenneth Watson Sr.
CHESTERFIELD — Ray Kenneth Watson Sr., 70, died Jan. 18, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 21 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
Born in Chesterfield, Watson was a son of the late Tom and Geneva Allen Watson. He was a retired electrician with Cooper Tools and owner and operator of Watson’s Electric. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and Chesterfield Masonic Lodge #220. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and an avid fisherman.
Watson was preceded in death by brother Tom Perry Watson and sisters Audrey Lampley, Dorothy Glover, and Jean Chisholm.
Surviving are wife Elizabeth Morton Watson; sons Ray K. (Debbie) Watson and Jason (Jean) Watson, both of Chesterfield; daughters Crystal W. (Sid) Newman, of Sumter, S.C., Connie W. (Chris) Page, of Chesterfield, and Donna W. (Bronson) Eslick, of Patrick; brother Rev. Jerry (Betty) Watson, of Sumter, and 11 grandchildren.

Melissa Funderburk ‘Missy’ Wallace
PATRICK - Melissa Funderburk “Missy” Wallace, 40, died Jan. 11, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 14 at Palmetto Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Wallace, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of Robert Joseph and Barbara Whittington Funderburk. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and Chesterfield-Marlboro Tech and was a retired Social Worker with Chesterfield County Department of Social Services. She was a member of Palmetto Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by grandfathers Basil Funderburk and Reid Whittington; grandmother Katherine Cox.

CHESTERFIELD – Dorothy Bell Gainey Curtis, 85, died Jan. 11, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 14 at David’s Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Curtis, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Hattie Atkinson Gainey. She was a homemaker and a member of David’s Grove Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by husband Rufus E. “Son” Curtis; brother Willie Gainey; sister Helen Boan and step grandson Bill Parrish.

Tommy Linwood Kimrey
CHERAW – Tommy Linwood Kimrey, 70, died Jan. 14, 2008. A graveside service was held Jan. 16 at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Kimrey, born in Cheraw, was a son of the late Leo and Mable Louise Wilson Kimrey. He was a retired farmer. He was a former race car driver and airplane pilot.
He was preceded in death by brother Jack Wilson Kimrey. Surviving are daughter Crystal (Hoyt) Graham of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandson Tripp Graham; brother Milton “Mickey” (Eva) Kimrey of Cheraw; sister Patsy White of Cheraw.

James Bobby ‘J.B.’ McIntyre
PATRICK – James Bobby “J.B.” McIntyre, 81, died Jan. 11, 2008. A graveside service was held Jan. 15 at Bay Springs Baptist Church. McIntyre, born in Chesterfield, was a son of the late Will and Lizzie Grooms McIntyre. He was a retired pulpwood cutter.
He was preceded in death by Frances Haney McIntyre and son Edward R. McIntyre.
Surviving are sons Buddy and Bobby McIntyre of Cheraw and James McIntyre of Marshville, N.C.; daughters Elizabeth Quick of Cheraw, Louise Tucker of Lancaster, S.C., Teresa McIntyre of Chesterfield, Virginia McIntyre of Lamar, S.C. and Catherine Wallace of Patrick; brother Willie McIntyre of Cheraw; 23 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. CHESTERFIELD - Kenneth Lee Rivers,46, died Jan. 6, 2008 at McLeod Hospital in Florence, S.C. A funeral service was held Jan. 12 at McClain Grove Missionary Baptist Church with burial in church cemetery. Rivers, born in Chesterfield County, was a son of Lottie Mae Rivers and the late Johnnie Rivers Jr. and. He was a faithful member of McClain Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Cheraw, and sang in the Gospel Choir.

Marvin David ‘Pops’ Baron
PAGELAND - Marvin David ‘Pops’ Baron, 86, died Jan. 7, 2008. A graveside service was held Jan. 9 at Providence Baptist Church cemetery.
Baron, born in McAdoo, Pa., was a son of the late William and Mary Ruth Terlinsky Baron. He attended Penn State University and was a Union Truck Driver with A & P for 36 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Louis and Harry Baron; sisters Phyllis Peters and Lillian Belovin. Surviving are wife Peggie Harrill Baron; sons Roger (Linda) Byrd of Hagerstown, MD and Rusty (Lisa) Gaytko of Pageland; daughter Sandra (Colby) Bledsoe of Myersville, MD; sister Dorothy Williams of Glen Cove, NY; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Annie Ree McKay Chambers
PAGELAND - Annie Ree McKay Chambers, 60, died Jan. 7, 2008 at CMC-Charlotte, N.C. A funeral service was held Jan. 13 at Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Chambers, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of the late Charlie and Minnie McKay. She was a graduate of Petersburg High School and attended Northeastern Technical College. She was an active member in the community and was always willing to lend a helping hand to everyone.
She was preceded in death by brothers Ray and Edward “Tom” McKay.

LANCASTER,S.C. – Billy Ralph Deese, 76, died December 26, 2007 at Carolinas Medical Center. A funeral was held December 29 at Grace Presbyterian Church with burial in Lakeland Memorial Park, Monroe, N.C.
Deese, born in Union County, was a son of the late Isom E. and Mamie Broome Deese. He was retired from Springs Industries. Louallen, born in Chesterfield County, was a son of the late Harold and Omie Clark Louallen. He was a member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church and Rocky Branch Masonic Lodge #240 for numerous years. He was employed by Sutton Funeral Home for many years.
He was preceded in death by wife of over 20 years Lily M. Louallen; son James Edward Louallen.

JEFFERSON - Katie Morgan Middleton died Jan. 7, 2008 at CMC-Union. A funeral service was held at Macedonia Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Middleton, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of the late Bud and Mary Eliza Campbell Morgan. She was a graduate of Coker College and taught in Chesterfield and Lancaster County Schools. She was a life long member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she was active in various programs.
Surviving are son Michael Middleton of St. Augustine, Fla. and daughter Vana Middleton of Jefferson. Memorial can be sent to Chesterfield County Cancer Support, Pageland or to Macedonia Baptist Church building fund.

Frances Kay Sims
MCBEE - Frances Kay Sims, 44, died Jan. 7, 2008. A funeral service was held Jan. 10 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home with burial in Smyrna Baptist Church cemetery, Pageland.
Sims, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of Willie Faye Mullis Sims and the late Herman Sims. She was a retired textile employee.
She was preceded in death by sister Martha Lynne Sims.

CHESTERFIELD - Helen Jenkins “Sister” Griggs, 86, died Dec. 31, 2007 at her home. A funeral service was held Jan. 2, 2008 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Chesterfield cemetery.
Griggs, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of the late James Mark and Mary Ann Morgan Jenkins. She was a graduate of Wingate College, a former school teacher in Mt. Croghan and a homemaker. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by husband Robert “Billy” Griggs; brothers John Wilson Jenkins, James Mark Jenkins, Jr., Carroll Jenkins and Wayne Adams.

She was preceded in death by son Ricky Hough; brothers James Blue and Jerome Diggs and sister Debra Diggs.

PAGELAND – Daisey D. Lowery, 76, died Dec. 29, 2007 at her home. A funeral service was held Jan. 2, 2008 at Long Branch Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, Jefferson.
Lowery, born in Jefferson, was a daughter of the late John Andrew and Lucy Mae Boone Melton. She was a homemaker and member of Faith Fellowship Church.
She was preceded in death by first husband Broadus James Donahue and son Bobby Joe Donahue.
Surviving are husband Wilson Lowery; daughter Shelby Donahue Baker of Cassatt, S.C.; brothers Chester and Harlan Melton both of Kershaw, S.C., and Harry Melton of Jefferson; sister Peggy Miles of Jefferson; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Valeria Reid McBride
Valeria Reid McBride, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007.
Born in Cheraw, S.C. she was the daughter of the late Walter E. and Lucille M. Reid. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Cheraw, S.C. serving as a Sunday School Teacher and was a member of the Carrie Hatchell Sunday School Class. Mrs. McBride was a member of the Garden Club. She had served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. She enjoyed tennis, swimming, gardening, fishing, sewing and crafts.
Surviving are her husband, Benjamin Floyd McBride of Cheraw, S.C., a son, Reid (Cheryl) McBride of Cheraw, S.C., a daughter, Martha (Bert) Dawkins of Surfside Beach, S.C., two grandchildren, Erin (Beau) Cannington of Gainesville, FL, Ashley (Noah) Holmes of Matthews, N.C. and a great-grandchild, Olivia Jane Holmes of Matthews, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, Dec. 31, 2007at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, S.C.

LANCASTER, S.C. – Lucy Rollings Parks, 69, died Dec. 26, 2007 at Springs Memorial Hospital. A funeral service was held Dec. 29, 2007 at Lancaster Funeral Home with burial in New Haven Baptist Church cemetery.
Parks, born in Jefferson, was a daughter of the late Walter Lewis and Julia Demby Rollings. She was a member of the New Haven Baptist Church and was retired from Springs Industries and Cuddy Farms of Marshville, N.C. She also had worked at Bojangles where she enjoyed meeting the guests.
She was preceded in death by brothers Jr. Mack Rollings, Ramsey Rollings, and Paul Rollings and sister Ruth Rushing.
Surviving are husband, Bobby Ray Parks; son Harold (Mary) Bailey of Lancaster, S.C.; daughter Anita (Steve) Langley of Lancaster, S.C.; stepson Bobby Ray (Brenda) Parks, Jr. of Pageland; stepdaughter Teresa (David) Martin of Pageland; brothers Hazel (Rita) Rollings of Lancaster, S.C., Clyde (Minnie Ruth) Rollings of Jefferson, and William “Bill” (Melita) Rollings of Jefferson; sister Ethel Rollings (Clark) Greene of Columbia, S.C.

Thias Du Val Crawford Seegars
CHARLOTTE,N.C. - Thias Du Val Crawford Seegars, 40, died Dec. 22, 2007 in Negril, Jamaica. A funeral service was held Dec. 31 at Crossroad Baptist Church, Kershaw, S.C. with burial in Sandy Grove United Methodist Church cemetery, Jefferson.
Seegars, born in Greensboro, N.C., was the daughter of Hattie M. Crawford Bracey and the late Colell Crawford. She was a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C. where she served faithfully as an Usher and Young Adult Sunday School Teacher.
She attended school in Bethune, S.C. graduating as salutatorian in 1984. She attended the scholars program for high school seniors at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. She graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, N.C. in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. She was employed by Bank of America as an independent contract software developer.
She was preceded in death by grandparents Alonzo and Zeola Crawford, L.D. and Ellen Mungo and child Yani.
Surviving are husband Eugene D Seegars; sons Tre’ and Kaci; mother; mother-in-law Shirley (Larry) Williams; father-in-law Eugene Seegars, Sr.,; brothers Marcos Emiliano (Annette) Bracey of Bethune, S.C. and Eric (Paula) Bracey of Camden, S.C.; sister Coletta LaShea Headen of Charlotte, N.C.; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins.

Letha M. Thompson
Letha M. Thompson, 81, beloved mother grandmother and great-grandmother died Sunday Dec. 23, 2007.
Born in Chesterfield, S.C. (Zoar Community) she was a daughter of the late Miles T. and Maggie Irene Deese White. She attended Chesterfield County Schools. She was married for 55 years to the late Bennett Thompson. She was a faithful member of North Cheraw Baptist Church and the Belle Sunday School class for over 30 years. She retired from the textile industry to spend time traveling, gardening and designing handmade crafts. She enjoyed preparing superb meals and desserts for her family.
She is survived by six children: Geraldine (Jimmy C.) Winburn of Ringgold, GA, Eunice (Barry) Martin of Wilmington, N.C., Rock (Sarah Ann) Thompson of Cheraw, S.C., David E. Thompson of Cheraw, S.C., Charles (Carol) Thompson of Jackson, MI, Terri (Mike) Garrell of Cheraw, S.C. In addition to her loving children she leaves behind eleven grandchildren: Gerri Stancil, Patti Raines, Jeff Martin, Sondra Johnson, Adam Thompson, Miles Thompson, Ashley Thompson, Ben Thompson, Staci Thompson, Melissa Garwood and Brooke Rodgers. Letha was blessed with eight great-grandchildren. Also, she is survived by a sister Juliette Douglas of Cheraw, S.C.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above; also, six siblings, George White, Myrtle Hewitt, Claude White, Ollie Quick, Margaret Russ, and Bill White.
The family will receive friends 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, S.C.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM, Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 at North Cheraw Baptist Church, Cheraw, S.C. Burial will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

PAGELAND - Joen Brock Timney, 90, died Dec. 27, 2007. A memorial service was held Jan. 12, 2008 at Cary Presbyterian Church, Cary, N.C. Timney, born in Akron, Ohio, was a daughter of the late Hazel and Charles Brock.
She was preceded in death by husband of 60 years Ronald Timney.

Betty Cook Bridges
CHERAW – Betty Cook Bridges, 67, died Dec. 26, 2007 at her home. A graveside service was held Dec. 29 at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Bridges, born in Wadesboro, N.C., was a daughter of the late Claude Lee and Elease B. Cook. She was a retired shift supervisor with Carolina Packaging.
She was preceded in death by husband, Odis Claudelle Bridges.

PAGELAND - Barbara Bush Samuels, 64, died Dec. 14, 2007. A funeral service was held Dec. 20 at Salem United Methodist Church with burial in church cemetery. Samuels, born in Pageland, was a daughter of the late Aaron
Lon and Alithea Edgeworth. She was educated in the public schools of Chesterfield County and later received her doctorate degree in Evangelism from the Lamp-Light International Bible Seminary. She enjoyed gospel singing and was the lead singer of The Samuel Gospel Singers.
She was preceded in death by first husband Jake Bush, Jr. and daughter Kimberly Dawn Bush.
Surviving are husband Rev. Cleveland “Jack” Samuels of Maryland; daughters Donna (Armando) Rodriquez, Deene (William) Bush both of Pageland, Robin (Rev. Tim) Burch of N. COLUMBIA, S.C. - Olivia “Cooter” Smith Shaw, 90, died Dec. 23, 2007. A funeral service was held Dec. 26 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery.
Shaw, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of the late William George and Mary Redfearn Eddins. She was a long time member of Chesterfield Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by first husband Jesse Lee Smith and then Fred Shaw; sons William G. “Bill” Smith and Thomas “Jack” Smith; granddaughter Cindy M. Koon. Surviving are daughters Sara (Sonny) Koon of Chapin, S.C. and Lynda George of White Rock, S.C.; granddaughters Wendy (James) Weaks of Hillsborough, N.C., Mindy Koon of Chapin, S.C. and Jennifer Weaver of Cheraw; grandsons Howard (Connie) Smith of Blythewood, S.C., Eric Smith of Hartsville, S.C. and Marion (Steffany) Smith of Galax, VA; 10 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Doziene Griggs Lisenby Waldrop,died Dec. 22, 2007 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. A funeral service was held Dec. 24 at Hopewell Baptist Church, Chesterfield, with burial in the church cemetery.
Waldrop, born in Ruby, was a daughter of the late John A. and Martha Rilla Moore Griggs. She was a member of the 4th I D Women’s League and a member of the Oriental Shriner’s Women Auxiliary. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by first husband David Lisenby,Sr. and then to Thomas Waldrop; stepson Randy Waldrop; infant daughter; 11 brothers and sisters.
Surviving are son David (Danya) Lisenby of Chesterfield; daughters Jane (Larry) Harrison and Ann Morgan both of Greensboro, N.C.; stepson Tab (Denise) Waldrop of Kernersville, N.C.; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; also numerous nieces and nephews.
