Billy Ward ‘Bill’ Ballard
PAGELAND— Billy Ward (Bill) Ballard, 82, of Pageland, S.C. died Aug. 20, 2007 at his home in Pageland.
Born Oct. 3, 1925 in the Camp Creek Community of Lancaster County, S.C., he was the son of the late Dewey Otis Balllard and Juanita Stogner Ballard. A graduate of Lancaster High School, he served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and participated in the occupation of Japan following the Japanese surrender in 1945.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he returned to his native home of Lancaster where he met and married the woman who would be his wife of 59 years, the former Betty Rae Hinson. He is survived by his wife, children: Burnie William (Bonnie) Ballard, of Pageland, George Eric (Jonnette) Ballard, of Cheraw, Otis Bradford “Brad” (Debbie) Ballard, of Cheraw, and Deidre Betts “DeDe” (Craig) Cato, of Pageland; sister Mary Brown Hinson, of Lancaster; and grandchildren Jason Ballard, John Ballard, Dru Ballard, Kyle Cato, Kaylee Cato, Katherine Ballard, Michael Ballard, and Amanda K. Earley.
After moving his family to the nearby town of Pageland in 1956, Ballard established himself in that community over the course of his 81 year life as an active businessman, first as the managing partner of a farm implement sales concern known as the Pageland Implement Company and later as a sales representative for Deutz U.S.A. A.G. and the J.I. Case Company. In later life, he concluded his business career as owner and operator of a retail tire store, Tire Country, located in the nearby town of Cheraw, until his retirement in 1991.
A member and former Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Pageland, he was, until recently, an assistant teacher of the Millon Tucker Sunday School class. He was also an active member and office-holder of numerous community-based religious, fraternal, and service organizations including: The Pageland Lion’s Club, Mt. Moriah Lodge A.F.M., Sandhill’s Shrine Club, Smith Grave’s Post 92 of the American Legion, Pageland VFW, and Gideon’s International. He was a life member of the NRA, an advocate and defender of the 2nd Amendment, and determined opponent of all politically-based gun control initiatives.
In addition to his business, religious and fraternal pursuits, Ballard was also a political activist. A long-time adherent to and activist of the Republican Party, he served as a campaign volunteer for numerous local, state and national Republican candidates. In recent years he also served as GOP State Executive Committeeman form his home county of Chesterfield and as a delegate to several state party conventions. In non-partisan elections, he was elected to two consecutive terms as a city councilman in his adopted home town of Pageland.
A funeral service was held Aug. 24 at Pageland First Baptist Church with burial in Lancaster Memorial Park, 1389 Memorial Park Road, Lancaster, S.C.

Jack “Jackie” A. Davis
JEFFERSON— Jack “Jackie” A. Davis, 66, died Aug. 21, 2007. A funeral was held Aug. 23, 2007 at Jefferson First Baptist Church with burial in Jefferson cemetery.
Davis was the son of the late Jack Lacy and Alice Brock Davis and a retired U.S. Mail Carrier and former owner of Jefferson Auto Parts. He was a Mason, Shriner (Jamil Temple), and a member of Jefferson First Baptist Church, White Plains Country Club, and Past Master of Macedonia Lodge #239.
Surviving are son Bud (Cindy) Davis, of Jefferson; daughter Jan (Geff) Ruddell, of Evansville, IN; step-son Kevin Whitman, of Jefferson, Ga.; step-daughter Stephanie Robbins, of Easley, S.C.; brothers James T. PAGELAND - Felisha Renee Funderburk, 19, died Aug. 20, 2007 at Springs Memorial Hospital, Lancaster, S.C. A funeral service was held Aug. 23 at Flemming Funeral Home Chapel in Pageland with burial in Oro United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Funderburk, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of Heyward and Audrey Funderburk. She graduated with honors from Central High School in May 2006.

CHESTERFIELD— The Rev. Lester F. Gaddy, 108, died Aug. 18, 2007. A funeral service was held Aug. 21, 2007 at West Deep Creek Baptist Church in Wadesboro, N.C. with burial at Long Pine Church cemetery in Peachland, N.C.
Gaddy, born in Anson County, N.C., was a son of the late Dave and Nancy Huntley Gaddy. He attended Anson County public schools and was a farmer. He was a member of Long Pine Baptist Church in Peachland, N.C. and Deep Creek Lodge #382.
He was preceded in death by wife Everlener Howard; nine children; 7 sisters and 3 brothers.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Amos Junior Gainey, 81, died Aug. 11, 2007. A funeral services was held Aug. 18, 2007 at Davidson Grove Baptist Church, Chesterfield with burial in the church cemetery.
Gainey, born in Chesterfield, was a son of the late James and Nethel Gainey. He was educated in the public schools of Chesterfield before relocating to Charlotte, N.C. Amos built his own business, Gainey Installation, in the 1970s.

Jordan, born in Jefferson, was a son of the late Jack and Rosa Lee Mills Jordan. He was a retired textile employee and a Baptist Minister. He was a member and former pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Bobby Carroll ‘Collie’ Melton
JEFFERSON— Bobby Carroll “Collie” Melton, 76, died Aug. 19, 2007. A funeral service was held Aug. 22 at Bethel Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Melton, born in Jefferson, was the son of the late Richard Leroy and Pinkey Robertson Melton. He was a retired employee of Springs Industries and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Maxie and Floyd Melton.

Aster Miller
JEFFERSON— Aster Miller, 90, died Aug. 19, 2007 at the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Monroe in Monroe, N.C.. A funeral service was held Aug. 22, at Hopewell United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Miller, born in Jefferson, was a son of the late Robert Dexter and Roxeanna Blakeney Miller. He was a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church. He retired from the Mungo Construction Company and many years of landscaping.
He was preceded in death by wife Eldred Miller.

Robert Lee Blackwell Sr.
PAGELAND – Robert Lee Blackwell Sr., 67, died Aug. 2, 2007. A funeral service was held Aug. 11 at Flemming Funeral Home Chapel, in Chesterfield, with burial in Piney Grove Baptist Church cemetery, in Patrick.
Blackwell, born in Chesterfield County, was a son of Essie Bell Hudley Blackwell and the late Richard Lee Blackwell. He was known as “Robert L.” and loved fishing.
He was preceded in death by son Robert L. Blackwell Jr., sisters Louise Barnes and Sandra Bostic, and brother Jerry Blackwell.

John Whittie Hammond
CHERAW – John Whittie Hammond, 73, died Aug. 14, 2007, at his home. A funeral service was held Aug. 16 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel in Chesterfield with burial in Florence National cemetery, in Florence, S.C.
Hammond, born in Nichols, S.C., was a son of the late Hoyt Mallard and Erlene Taylor Hammond. He retired as US Air Force TSGT with 20 years of service and was a former Charlotte Observer carrier with 13 years of service.

Carroll J. Ingram
JACKSONVILLE, FLA.– Carroll J. Ingram, 80, died Aug. 11, 2007, in Jacksonville, Fla., after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. A funeral service was held Aug. 17 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, in McFarlan, N.C. with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Ingram, born in Bluett Falls, N.C.,and raised in Lilesville, N.C., was a son of the late Furman and Etta Crawley Ingram. He worked 45 years in the railroad business at Seaboard Airline Railroad, in Hamlet, N.C., then relocated to Jacksonville where he retired from CSX. He was a devoted member of Southside Baptist Church, in Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by brothers Frank and Bernard Ingram and sister Christine Ingram.
Surviving are wife of 56 years Helen Teal Ingram of the home; daughter Gail (Ray) Kozikowski, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; son C.J. Demby, born in Pageland, was a daughter of the late William Harley Evans and Mildred Robinson Evans Travis. She was a retired office clerk with Chesterfield General Hospital. She was a member of First Southern Methodist Church where she served as a former Sunday school teacher and a member of WMS.
She was preceded in death by husband James W. Demby.

PAGELAND – Nelle Outen Pigg, 89, died Aug. 11, 2007. A funeral service was held Aug. 13 at First Baptist Church.
Pigg, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of the late Walter B. and Wrine Anderson Outen. She was a retired store owner and a member of First Baptist Church, of Pageland.
She was preceded in death by husband Gary Pigg, sisters Ethel and Violet and brother Brutus.

CHESTERFIELD – Mildred Teal “Punk” Williams, 66, died Aug. 14, 2007. A funeral service was held Aug. 17 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Peniel cemetery behind Pine View Baptist Church.
Williams, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of the late John Carlos and Margie Rebecca Rogers Teal. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by first husband J.D. Broadaway, brother Herbert Teal and sister Ruth Lewis.

CLOVER, S.C. – Jo Marie Bagwell, 58, died Aug. 17, 2007, at the home of her mother and father.

Bagwell, daughter of Joe and Betty Bagwell, of Pageland, was the pianist at Kings Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church, in York.
She was employed at Carolina Medical Center, in Charlotte, N.C. as a radiologic technologist.

CHERAW – Adam Joseph Brock, 19, died Aug. 4, 2007. A funeral service was held Aug. 6 at Pine View Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Brock, born in Rockingham, N.C., was a son of Timothy Glenn and Rachel Susan Roscoe Brock. He was a 2006 graduate of Chesterfield High School and was a member of the Rams Marching Band. He was a member of Pine View Baptist Church.
Brock was preceded in death by grandfathers Glenn Brock, Oscar Roscoe and Lewis Rendenna.

CHESTERFIELD – Joseph S. Lisenby, 64, died Aug. 2, 2007. A graveside service was held Aug. 9 at Mt. Level Baptist Church cemetery.
Lisenby, born in Chesterfield, was a son of the late Paul and Ida B. Ratliff.
His most rewarding work and hobby was his many years of baking and cooking for the Breenes Bakery, in Alexandria, Va. He loved to cook and bake for family, friends and others.
He was preceded in death by siblings Harry and Bobby Lisenby, Pearl Lisenby Silver, Pauline Lisenby Jackson, Calvin Lisenby, David, James and Robert Sellers.

Patricia Lisenby Pittman
CHESTERFIELD – Patricia Lisenby Pittman, 60, died Aug. 5, 2007, at her home. A funeral service was held Aug. 8 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Chesterfield Cemetery.
Pittman, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of the late Niven Bryan and Corinne McLain Lisenby. She was a graduate of Columbia College and was a teacher and media specialist for 34 years.
She was preceded in death by in-laws Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pittman and sister Joyce Lisenby Markusen.
She is survived by husband of 40 years Jackie Pittman; son William Michael Pittman, of Columbia; brother Larry B. (Kitt) Lisenby, of Chesterfield; nephew Bryan William (Erin) Markusen; niece Emma Joyce, and nephew Aidan James, of Wake Forest, N.C.

Shaw, born in Hopewell, Va., was a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Jane Grant Chavis. She was a homemaker and enjoyed going to auctions and yard sales. Shaw was a member of the True-Gospel Emmanuel Holiness Church and was also a member of the WOW Peachtree Lodge No. 0966.
She was preceded in death by sister Vera Leviner and brothers Elijah and Junior Chavis.

Elaine Sellers Taylor
PAGELAND – Elaine Sellers Taylor, 87, died Aug. 10, 2007.
A funeral service was held Aug. 12 at Providence Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Taylor, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of the late W.A. “Bub” and Lettie Alliene Merriman Sellers.
She retired from Pageland Manufacturing Company and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by husband Keith Taylor, brother Rhett Sellers and sisters Madge Guthrie, Vera Burch, Doris Seegars, Dallas Gordon, and Celia Sellers.
Surviving are sons Joe (Beverly) Taylor, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Steve (Gayle) Taylor, of Pageland; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Daniel Franklin ‘D.F.’ Davis
RUBY – Daniel Franklin “D.F.” Davis Jr., 64, died July 28, 2007 at his home. A funeral service was held July 30 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery.
Davis, born in Chesterfield, was a son of the late Daniel Franklin and Vera Beatrice White Davis. He was a retired employee of Chesterfield Webbing and a former employee of Bo-Buck Mill. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars and playing his guitar. He was a former member of the Melody Makers.
He was preceded in death by brother James Eddie Davis; and sisters Vickie Warner, Stella Carrick and Janice Tucker.
Surviving are wife Bonnie L. Blackburn Davis; sons Danny (Marie) Davis, of Chesterfield, and Mikey (Sandy) Davis, of Ruby; daughter Michelle Atkinson, of Ruby; and grandchildren Ashton Gaddy, Kara Davis and Jasper Davis.

Helen Powe M. Morrison
CHERAW — Helen Powe M. Morrison, of Cheraw, died July 23, 2007 at Chesterfield General Hospital. A funeral services was held July 28 at Goodman Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Morrison resided several years in Baltimore, Md., and later returned to Cheraw. She was a lifelong member of the Goodman Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by husbands Cletus Miller and Bannister Morrison; daughter Mildred M. Rabb; and son Robert Miller Sr.
Surviving are son-in-law Warren Rabb III, of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren Janet V. Rabb and Roderick A. Rabb, of San Diego, Calif., and Robert Miller Jr.; three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Ruth Lindsay Pigg Kirk
LANCASTER — Ruth Lindsay Pigg Kirk, 87, died July 29, 2007 at her home. Services were held Aug. 1 at First Baptist Church with burial in Lancaster Memorial Park.
Kirk, born in Union County, N.C., was a daughter of the late Benjamin Troy and Jesse Funderburk Pigg. She was a graduate of Wingate College and attended Winthrop College. She was a public school teacher and taught at Pageland Elementary School for seven years. Kirk and her husband established a successful business, Lancaster Feed and Farm Supply, Inc. where she was bookkeeper for 38 years before retiring in 1984. She will be remembered for her love of flowers, gardening, and bird watching. She was an active member of First Baptist Church.
Surviving are husband James M. Kirk, of the home; daughter Mary Kathryn “Kathy” K. (Scott) Douglass, of Durham, N.C.; son James B. (Jayne) Kirk, of Lancaster; sister Elsie M. Graves, of Pageland; and grandson Robert James Douglass, of Cary, N.C.

Heyward D. ‘Sleepy’ ‘Buck’ Sellers
PAGELAND – Heyward D. “Sleepy” “Buck” Sellers, 91, died Aug. 2, 2007 at Hospice of Union County, Monroe, N.C.
Services were held Aug. 4 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Carolina Memorial Park, in Concord, N.C.
Sellers, born in Ruby, was a son of the late Sinclair C. and Leila Mae Smith Sellers. He was a retired employee of Fieldcrest Cannon Inc. with over 30 years of service. His first job was working with the W.P.A., building the Ruby-Hartsville Highway and later with the C.C.C. building Cheraw State Park. He was a faithful member of Cross Roads Baptist Church where he was instrumental in the building of the Family Life Center.
He was preceded in death by wife Eleanor Quick Sellers; sisters Maude Rushing, Annie Sellers and Sarah Moses; and brothers Robert, John Franklin, and Carroll Lucas Sellers.
Surviving are special niece Jean Rushing, of Mt. Croghan; special sister-in-law Martha Sellers, of Kannapolis, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia Polson “Peggy” Wallace
MONROE — Virginia Polson “Peggy” Wallace, 65, died July 29, 2007. A graveside service was held July 31 at Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Wallace, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of Nealie Brown Polson McLain and the late Wilson Robert Polson. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by husband James “J.W.” Wallace and granddaughter Heather Nicole Wallace.
Surviving are son Ricky J. Wallace, of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter Regina Graven, of Monroe, N.C.; grandchildren Tiffany, Heather, Hannah, Robert, Dina, and Kimi; brothers Wilson Polson, Billy Polson, and Gerald Polson, all of Chesterfield; and sisters, Bonnie Jean Gibson and Kathy Polson, of Chesterfield. William Marion Privett
CHERAW — William Marion Privett, 63, died July 29, 2007 at his home. A funeral service was held Aug. 1 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Privett was born in Wadesboro, N.C., and was a son of the late Clarence Marion and Carrie Wrenn Privette. He was a retired supervisor with Delta Mills.
He was preceded in death by son Bobby Wayne Jordan; brothers Clarence D., Carl, and Thomas F. Privette, and sister Grace Privette.
Surviving are wife Eva Mae Crowley Privett, of the home; sons Scott Privett, of Enoree, S.C., Darrel Jordan, of Cheraw, William Jordan, of Ruby, and Perry Jordan, of Patrick; daughters Marion Warner, of Troy, S.C., Crystal Jordan, of Cheraw, Jackie Quick, of Cheraw, and Elaine Moore, of Cheraw; brother Robert Privette, of Ruby ;eight grandchildren; special little girl Macy Sanders and a number of nieces and nephews.
