Henry Arthur Gritzback
PAGELAND – Henry Arthur Gritzback, 69, died July 27, 2007. A funeral service was held July 29 at Almetta Independent Baptist Church.
Gritzback was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retiree of Conbraco Industries.
He was preceded in death by brother Richard Joseph Gritzback.
Surviving are wife Mary W. Gritzback; son Henry “Hank” Gritzback, of Pageland; daughters Donna Gritzback, of Lancaster, S.C., and Lisa (Eric) Smith, of Patrick; sister Shirley (Thomas) Crews, of Orange City, Fla.; half-brothers Kenneth and David Slater, of Schenectady, N.Y.; and grandchildren Heather Hilton, Jennifer Callaway and Breana Gritzback.

RUBY – Harold Anderson “Andy” Hancock, 49, died July 27, 2007. A funeral service was held July 29 at Ruby Baptist Church with burial in Watson Cemetery.
Hancock, born in Monroe, N.C., was a son of the late Harold and Vinelle Watson Hancock. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and a former employee of Conbraco Industries. He was a member of Ruby Baptist Church and an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed riding his tractor.
Surviving are son Chris Hancock, of the home; sister Dana (Mike) Alexander, of Ruby; nephew Trent Alexander, of Ruby; and step-grandmother Vonnie Mae Watson, of Chesterfield.

Richard Hinson
CHERAW — Richard Hinson, 63, died July 16, 2007. A funeral service was held July 21 at Flemming Funeral Home Chapel in Chesterfield with burial in Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery in Cheraw.
Hinson was known as one of the greatest carpenters in the area.
He was preceded in death by sister Loretta Hinson and brother Walter Hinson.
Surviving are wife Nezzie Mae Hinson; daughters Yulanda Hinson, of Columbia, S.C., and Wynne Hinson, of Patrick; son Marlon Hinson, of Columbia; sisters Georgiana Hinson, Margie Hinson, Roseana Hinson and Duralen Hinson, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; brothers Tony Hinson, Perry and Jerry Ratcliff; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Marvin Randall ‘Randy’ Knight
KERSHAW — The Rev. Marvin Randall “Randy” Knight, 46, died July 16, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, S.C. A funeral service was held July 19 at First Baptist Church of Kershaw with burial at Kershaw City Cemetery.
Knight, born in Monroe, N.C., was the son of Marvin Ralph Knight and the late Ruth Horne Knight. He was the minister at Providence Baptist Church of Kershaw.
Surviving along with his father are wife Kathy Broughton Knight ; sons Jeremy and Jamie Wheeler, of Lancaster; sisters Jerri (Omer) Bowers, of Heath Springs, S.C., and Sandy (Joey) Phillips, of Rockwell, N.C.

Starnes was the daughter of the late Layven and Lois Griffin Lee. She was retired from PCA in Matthews, N.C.
She was preceded in death by husband Ray Starnes; daughter Nancy Jenkins Hash; brother Bob Lee; sister Jean Jenkins; and grandson Corey Starnes.

MT. CROGHAN — Richard Paul Sukovich, 68, died July 24, 2007 at his home. A private funeral service was held July 28 at the home.
Sukovich born in Elizabeth, N.J., was the son of the late Paul Richard and Anna Paulich Sukovich. He was a retired lineman with Jersey City Power & Light Company.
Surviving are wife Suzanne Alpaugh Sukovich, of the home; son Richard Paul Sukovich Jr., of Ft. Myers, Fla.; daughters Sherrie (Kenneth) Spencer, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Bonnie (Tom) Garcia, of Milford, N.J.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

PAGELAND — Marie Funderburk Threatt, 89, died July 17, 2007. A funeral service was held July 21 at Flint Ridge Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Threatt, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of the late George and Lou Annie Funderburk. She was a devoted member of Flint Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, member of the Hymn Choir, and was “Mother Of The Church,” and a housewife.
She was preceded in death by husband Willie A. Threatt; sons Louis Threatt Jr., John Frazier Threatt, and Bilrey Threatt; sisters Ruth Vinson, Mary Alice Watts, and Edith Faulkner; brothers David, John, Broadus, and Leo “Buck” Funderburk; and two grandsons.

Pixie Hayes Adams
CHERAW - Pixie Hayes Adams, 55, died July 17, 2007. A funeral service was held July 20 at United Fellowship of God Church where she was a member with burial at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
Adams, born in Bennettsville, was a daughter of Mary Brown Hayes and the late Richard Prentiss Hayes. She was a retired employee of Stanley Tools with 34 years of service. She was an avid softball player and was very devoted to all her family and friends. She was married to the late Jasper Adams Jr.
Surviving are son Clinton Jasper Adams of the home; daughter Leslie Michelle Wilkes of the home; grandchild Jace Wilkes; mother Mary Brown Hayes, of Cheraw; brothers Richard S. (Nancy), Johnny P. PAGELAND – Letha Price Ford, 87, died July 12, 2007 at her home. A funeral service was held July 15 at Providence Baptist Church where she was a member with burial in the church cemetery.
Ford, born in Pageland, was a daughter of the late John and Minnie Moore Price. She was a retired employee of Chesterfield Yarn Mill. She was married to the late Henry Ford. She was preceded in death by brothers Houston, Henry, Vann and Vernon Price; and sisters Grace Carnes, Jeanette Holley, Sarah Horne, Blake Stepp, Mary Lee Rollings, Fannie Hathaway and Ruby Deese.
Surviving are daughter Kathy Ford of the home, Bobbie Laney (special caregiver), and a number of nieces and nephews.

MT. CROGHAN – Thomas Harlan Gaddy, 79, died July 17, 2007. A funeral service was held July 20 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Mt. Croghan United Methodist Church where he was a member.
Gaddy, born in Anson County, N.C., was a son of the late John Weldon and Notie Ellen Freeman Gaddy. He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was married to the late Clarene Johnson Gaddy.
He was preceded in death by daughters Penny Lynn and Shannon Michelle Gaddy; brothers Kenneth, Jack and Harold Gaddy; sisters Claytie G. Burch, Betty Adams and Judy Ann McAllister.

Gulledge, born in Ruby, was a daughter of the late Elisha Andrew “Bub” Gulledge and Rosa Cornelia Rivers Gulledge. She was a former employee of Ruby Hosiery Mill and the Ruby Cannery. She was a member of Thompson Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by brothers Leon, Ross and Wilson Gulledge, and sisters Mary Allen, Sallie Mae GUlledge, Florence Gulledge and Gladys Gulledge.
Surviving are sister Margie G. Sutton, of Ruby, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Moles, born in Ruby, was a daughter of the late Archie Lee and Ella Mae Roscoe Gulledge. She was a homemaker. She was married to the late Elmer Lee Moles.
She was preceded in death by brothers Murray and Willie Arthur Gulledge, and sisters Helen Brock, Esther Eddins and Mary Lee Rivers.

Dennis Michael (Mickey) Plyler
PAGELAND – Dennis Michael (Mickey) Plyler, 63, died July 21, 2007. A funeral service was held July 24 at High Point Baptist Church.
Plyler, born in Charlotte, N.C., was a son of the late Isom F. and Margaret Rogers Plyler. He was involved in a lot of different businesses such as Plyler Mobile Home Sales, Plyler Saw Mill, P & L Bark and Mickey Plyler Trucking Company. He was a racing enthusiast owning several race cars and had a hobbie of restoring old cars.
He was preceded in death by brothers Richard, Joe and Freddie Plyler.
Surviving are wife Judy A. Plyler; sons Michael (Kristen) Plyler, of Pageland, Mitchell (Kandee) Plyler, of Pageland and Matthew Plyler, of Columbia, S.C.; daughter Monica (Paul) Tomberlin, of Pageland; grandchildren Drake, Miyah, Alannah, Ashlynn, Anna, Zoe Plyler and Jacob Tomberlin.

He was preceded in death by wife Louella Humphries Tucker, son Albert Ray Bridges and daughter Barbara Elaine Bridges.

Timmons, born in Cheraw, was a son of the late Samuel Thomas “Mr. T” and Annie Jones Timmons. He was a retired truck driver, farmer and a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He was a faithful member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by first wife, Tiny Howard Timmons; second wife, Edna Sellers Lee Timmons; sisters Ruth Stroud, Rosa Lee McLaurin, Margarette McLaurin and Betty Canipe.

Barthlow, born in Patrick, was a daughter of the late Edward and Carrie Williams Cranford. She was a homemaker and a member of New Providence Baptist Church.
She was first married to the late Elijah Goodale and then to the late Cleve Barthlow and was also preceded in death by sister, Edith Davis; brothers, Edward and David Cranford.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coldell Welch, 71, died June 26, 2007. A funeral service was held July 1 at Rocky Branch Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Welch, born in Lancaster County, was a son of the late Baxter Lee and Easter Mungo Welch. He retired after 32 years of service from Estes Express Lines in Charlotte, N.C. and attended St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are wife Carolyn J. Cobb; sisters Atherine (Vanus) McManus, Pearl (Frank) Love, and Marie (Russell Curtis) Hughes, all of Washington, D.C.; brothers Roosevelt (Tina Leake) Welch, Willie (Sandra Spain) Welch, and Billie (Linda Patterson) Welch, all of Charlotte, N.C.; nieces, Louise (Bill) Lucas, of Washington, D.C., Ola Jean (Al) Avant, of Indian Trail, N.C. and Karen Byrd, of Wadesboro, N.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ronald Eugene ‘Ronnie’ Welsh
CHESTERFIELD – Ronald Eugene “Ronnie” Welsh, 59, died July 1, 2007. A funeral service was held July 3 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.
Welsh, born in Chesterfield, was a son of the late Jadie Wilbert and Geneva Griggs Welsh. He was a retired textile employee and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by brother Jerry Welsh.
Surviving are son Darrin (Marquita) Welsh, of Grayson, Ky.; daughter Tammy (Dale) Tyner-Walters, of Chesterfield; grandsons Stephen Tyner, of Clemson University, Dustin and Kip Tyner, of Chesterfield, and Trenton Welsh, of Grayson, Ky..

BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. – Earl Speight Jr., 53, died July 3, 2007. A funeral service was held July 7 at Smyrna United Methodist Church.
Speight, born in Lumberton, N.C., was a son of George and Juanita Currin Alexson. He was owner and operator of Earl’s Upholstery and enjoyed hiking and camping.
He was preceded in death by brother Sam Speight and sister Wanda Lynn Alexson.
Surviving are wife of 25 years Jenny Gaskins Speight; parents; sons, Christopher George (Trina) Speight, of Bennettsville, S.C., and Dane (fiance Jenny Gay) Horne, of Moundville, Ala.; daughter,Alicia (Kevin) Griggs, of Wallace, S.C.; sisters Linda Herndon, of Laurel Hill, N.C. and Faye Brigman, of Wallace, S.C.; and grandchildren Gage Speight, Hannah and Kevin Scott Griggs Jr.

Sheila Laney Knight
JEFFERSON – Sheila Laney Knight, 39, died June 25, 2007. A funeral service was held at Taxahaw Baptist Church in Lancaster with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Pageland.
Knight, born in Monroe, N.C., was a daughter of Mary Langley Laney and the late Harry Lee Laney. She was owner and operator of Golden Nugget Seafood Restaurant and was a member of Taxahaw Baptist Church.
Surviving are husband, Glenn Knight; mother, Mary Laney of Kershaw; daughters, Karis (Brian) Hicks of Pageland, Kayla and Megan Knight of Jefferson; grandson, Landon Brian Hicks; brothers, Michael Laney of Lancaster, S.C. and Tommy Laney of Rutherfordton, N.C.; sisters, Frances Baucom of Pageland, Darlene Faulkenberry of Kershaw and Denise Ratliff of Wadesboro, N.C.

Martha Elizabeth Starling Mabe
CHESTERFIELD – Martha Elizabeth Starling Mabe, 62, died June 25, 2007 at her home. A graveside service was held June 27 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mabe, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of the late John and Cora Lee Parker Starling. She was a retired housing manager.
She was preceded in death by son, Joe Cross; granddaughter, Angel Wallace Mabe; brothers, John Wesley, Woodrow, and Thomas Eugene Starling; sisters, Lucy Lambirth and Retha Vivian Dixon.
Surviving are sons. Timmy Starling of Chesterfield, Todd (Ellen) Mabe of Cheraw and Duane Mabe of the home; two grandchildren, Skylar and Aden Mabe; brother, Franklin Starling of Cheraw; sisters, Nellie Carol Parker of Asheboro, N.C. and Margie Sweatt of Chesterfield.

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. – Mary Lou Eddins Merriman, 90, died June 22, 2007. A funeral service was held June 25 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel,Chesterfield, with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery, Chesterfield.
Merriman, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of the late Thomas Wesley and Nezzie Zoe Cason Eddins. She was a graduate of Limestone College and was a retired bus station manager. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by husband, John William Merriman, Jr.; daughter, Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Merriman; sister, Lera Davis. Surviving are son, Kenneth (Jane) Merriman of Florence, S.C.; sister, June Smith of Leesville, S.C.; two grandchildren, Brian (Suzanna) Merriman of Anderson, S.C. and Mabrey (Scott) Matherly of Baltimore, MD; 4 great grandchildren.

Rhynes, born in Chesterfield, was a daughter of the late John C. “Lummie” and Bertha Cleo Kirkley Gibson. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Oakland Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by brothers, J.Harold, Ronnie and Billy “Bate” Gibson; sisters, Genroa Faile, Brenda and Clara Gibson.
Surviving are daughter, Carol Ann (Doug) Curtis of Chesterfield; four granddaughters, Kirkley, Natalie, Linsey, and Taylor Curtis of Chesterfield; brothers, James Gibson of Kannapolis, N.C., Robert (Lib) Gibson of Spartanburg, S.C. and John “Jimmy” (Bonnie Jean) Gibson of Chesterfield; sisters, Bobbie (Bobby Jule) Gulledge of Concord, N.C., Betty (Billy) Sellers of Cheraw and Gail (Tom) Cassidy of Chesterfield.

Wilson, born in Chesterfield County, was a daughter of the late Syco and Hester Newman Sullivan.
She was preceded in death by husband, Thomas Wilson; daughter, Mae Wilson; sons-in-law, Ned Miller, Jr., Vance Miller, Lanston Blakeney and Charles McBride.
Surviving are daughters, Mamie Miller, Elaine Wilson, Betty Wilson, Vivian McBride all of Mt. Croghan, Hester Blakeney of Pageland and Justine (James) Harrell of Jefferson; sons, Johnny (Belinda) Wilson, Jimmy Wilson, Tommy and Ray Wilson all of Mt. Croghan and Michael (Lillie) Wilson of Marshville, N.C.; 25 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
